I don’t think the bigs necessarily need to play smart. It’s more about playing hard.

As you said, the perimeter guys will give us a possession advantage by playing smart and limiting mistakes. The bigs create that same advantage through their offensive rebounding abilities.

Both Robinson (2nd) and Queta (9th) were top 10 in offensive rebounds per game. Garza didn’t play enough, but he was 11th if you look at Per 36.

The Celtics had a massively positive FGA differential to start last season, like runaway 1st place. Part of that was because we were getting historically hosed by the officials (fewer FTA means more FGA), but part of it was also just Joe going all in on possession-based basketball.

Our FGA differential dropped as the season went on (also partly coinciding with Brown calling out the officials so we got a fairer whistle), and we finished 4th, taking +3.4 more FGA than our opponents.

This season I think we’ll push even harder on that front.

I’ve been saying for years that Bill Russell’s game was still ahead of the curve even by modern standards. Everyone bought into the idea that efficiency = wins, when in actual fact it’s efficiency x possessions = wins.

Bill dominated the league by dominating the possession game. The Celtics grabbed a lot of rebounds and forced a lot of turnovers. It’s how they were able to be such a high-scoring team despite always being pretty mediocre in their efficiency.

Now it looks like the league is finally starting to catch up, almost 60 years after he retired.

I have no idea what his ceiling will be. It’s hard to determine the future of someone with that much chaotic energy.

I agree with your premise: there was a faction of the fan base that had (has) unrealistic expectations about competing in the playoffs last year (and this coming year) given the “retool”. And there’s a lot of overlap with the “Fire Brad” faction.

“Better a year too early than a year too late” is a sports cliche that applies here.

The prior window closed when we lost to the Knicks. This two-year retool was absolutely necessary whether the 2nd apron forced it or not.

I’m honestly not sure what you’re talking about. I’ve seen a lot of crazy takes on this sub, but someone saying that just removing JB from the team makes them better has not been something I’ve come across.

The CBA (now that we’re potentially through the most painful parts) is going to be fascinating to watch over the next few years. The Celtics are now ahead of the pack and I trust in Brad to keep us that way.
