Why not trade JB last year?
Apologies for the 10000000th JB trade post. But one thing I haven’t really seen discussed is if the Celtics prefer “optionality” and don’t want to pay 70% of the cap to 2 guys - then presumably they also felt that way last offseason? At which time, we expected Tatum to be out for the year.
There was a clear logic to trading JB and treating that season as a full rebuild year - but at the time Brad and the vast majority of this sub were vocally against that.
JB has a season that exceeds all expectations. Now suddenly we can’t wait to get rid of him? And now we’re going into a 2nd “bridge” year where I don’t think we realistically expect to win a title.
Whether or not you agree with trading JB, I keep wondering what changed between last offseason and this one. And the only things I can think are a) Chisholm purchase wasn’t finalized until last August - so either Wyc didn’t want us to trade JB bc he thought it could hurt the sale price or Chisholm took over and wanted to cut $, or b) Brad/Mazzulla became concerned abt JB’s antics and wanted to clear him out of the locker room
People keep talking about 2nd apron - and I have no doubt that was a major factor. But something else changed between last offseason and this one in terms of how the Celtics front office thought about this team
