there’s racism everywhere in a country that was founded on it. it’s ingrained in every part of our society, whether it’s explicitly noticeable or more of an underlying component. there is not a place in the US where you can’t find examples of racism, especially in sports culture. No one is going to pretend Boston doesn’t have a racist history or currently-existing racists or examples of modern racism, but that’s not a unique-to-Boston thing. He grew up 40 mins from Cleveland, for fuck’s sake. they didn’t change their openly and outwardly racist baseball team name/logo until the 2022 season.

There’s certainly a long history in Boston problems regarding race relations, but the Celtics as a franchise were hugely progressive in a time where the city wasn’t. The Celtics drafted the first black player. The Celtics hired the first black coach. The Celtics had the first all black starting five. Though the city struggled, the Celtics were instrumental in pushing to make the league and the city a better place

I hate the stereotype that Boston and Boston sports fans as a whole are racist because it’s just not true. With that being said, let’s not pretend like these people don’t exist. But they exist in all fanbases, in all cities, in all states.

Boston gets the attention because Boston was the team willing to take the risk to bring in a black head coach and black players. The Boston Celtics organization is not racist, they are groundbreaking. It’s a shame that there’s a small percentage of nasty fans they get the most attention. They do not represent us, nor do they represent this city, what is very diverse.
