Jason Terry hits the dagger over LeBron James during game 5 of the 2011 NBA finals
As much as everyone focuses on LeBron’s choke, you have to give credit to the Mavs. They went through the entire postseason playing like their lives were on the line.
Shooting 40% from three as a team in the finals is crazy and is constantly overlooked.
46% in the Lakers series, shit was crazy
I wasn’t even mad when we lost the series, it was very apparent sometimes it’s just not your year and it’s someone else’s
Curry averages right around 40% from 3 in the finals. A whole team doing that is absurd.
if Deshawn Stevenson has no fans left, then it means I lay dead and buried
the man could not hit the broad side of a barn from midrange, and could not miss a three toward the end of the run
They were the best team in the league. They didn’t win on accident or some sort of fluke.
They also had the majority of their core for 5 years and were a 50-60+ win team that whole time. I think the strength of the west during those years, the we believe warriors loss, and the DWade finals lost made people doubt them. Also the Heatles did break the leagues brain for a few years.
Tyson Chandler was the big difference-maker for the Mavs that season. One of the best 1-year rentals in NBA history. Dirk is a legend but he was ass at defense. Chandler shored up their biggest weakness
Chandler averaged almost 4 offensive rebounds a game that playoff series too. Also, gotta remember the defensive impact of Shawn Marion who blocked as many shots in the playoffs as Chandler did.
Next to those 2 guys, Dirk was able to be a little bit of a defensive problem just by being tall.
People also forget the Mavs were at the top of the West the first quarter of the season starting out red hot at 24-5. They fell off for a bit in the middle of the year when Dirk got hurt on Christmas and Caron Butler was lost for the year on NYD. After that they went 3-10 before finally getting things back together once Dirk was able to return finishing out the year 30-10 for an overall record of 57-25 and 3rd in the West.
Dirk and Jet were the only players on the team for both 2006 and 2011
shame at what that franchise has become
Unlike your expensive, mediocre franchise that needs under the table money to attract stars right?
Mavs franchise ended when they traded Luka
Too early to tell
we’d never trade a superstar in their prime
You never draft them either. A poverty franchise with the richest owner.
He not wrong… the heart that was this team moved with Luka. They have a nice squad though but that culture is gone.
We drafted Blake Griffin who absolutely was a superstar but also traded him in his prime before his knees fell apart so both of your points cancel out. We may have been a poverty franchise under Sterling considering people were damn near paid to attend games; but we’re far from a poverty franchise now. I don’t think you know what poverty means. Sure we have the richest owner, but what does that really have to do with anything? Also, people swear like they wouldn’t have made the trade to get both Kawhi and PG, they only say that now because of how its turned out.
we drafted shai
Where he at now?
Lmao oh yeah. Ironic and only proving my point further. Traded your superstar away and he won afterwards with a better run org.
at least we dont need draft lotteries rigging
Or do you?
Surely you must’ve gotten good results out of the guy you traded him for
That 20~ point come back was the stuff of legends
JET deserved to be a maverick for the rest of his career
Jason Terry is a legend for that series.
For that season. Dude got the trophy tattoo before the season started then went out and won one. That’s objectively tough as fuck
Always found it interesting how Terry seemed to prefer pulling up off his strong hand. For most players that’s a less natural shot than going up off their off-hand.
Same for me. Im always told that right handed shooters prefer to shoot going left or fading left. It feels natural to me to do both from my right.
Ive never heard or read this before myself and Im also a right handed shooter and fade and lean right. It doesn’t feel the same going left, interesting.
There’s two parts to it. First is that ‘proper’ form is not square and has the body pointed slightly away from the strong hand. Think how feet are staggered for FTs. And if you’re driving left your foot and body position is closer to that alignment. When driving to the right you have to swing around the outside leg more. Tho it’s worth noting that if you’re taking a wide angle (like running around the arc for a catch and shoot) that momentum can feel more natural as you can spin with it instead of fighting the rotation.
Second is more conditioning. If your off-hand is weak you’re more likely to pull up as a crutch instead of driving the whole way.
Your shoulders and feet are more square going left and it’s less movement, going right usually relies on momentum from the dribble and right foot stopping through to create momentum and square everything up. I generally think going left is easier to shoot from and most guys who are great shooters off the dribble prefer that. But it’s not everybody. Chris Paul was deadly pulling up going right and stepping into his shots basically never went left. JJ Redick and Kyle Korver also preferred going right and stepping into their shots to square themselves up.
So many ridiculous shots hit by Dallas in that series. The most I have ever seen in the finals.
Dirk had the hardest path to any championship ever
Crazy. Mavs were 1 Bosh gamewinner away from winning in 5
also a d wade miss from possibly losing in seven.
I’m a LeBron guy but it is crazy how this type of stuff never seemed to happen to Jordan. It felt like he never ended up on the wrong side of a big play
There just weren’t as many camera angles and high definition slow motion replays or an internet to preserve them in the same way we do now. Like this play exists for example (https://youtube.com/shorts/NjMPni7YIcc?si=MJt4NIsVnB1WbgJH) or these plays (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwDE_qg7t_c).
I mean there’s a reason people pretty consistently identify 2011 as the biggest blemish on Bron’s career
there are probably a handful of examples in the early part of his career, basically 1984-90, but not in the finals on the biggest stage.
Never happened to Jordan.
Miss those Mark Jackson calls.
along with the music in the background
Old ESPN theme is goated
He was good in small doses
I’d rather have him and JVG back than what we have now. I do like Legler though. RJ needs replaced
RJ became tiring to listen to. I like JVG because he just says wild things without trying to insulting.
What does second cousins mean? When people say that, I never know what they mean - Or what you’re allowed to do when you’re a second cousin.
RJ is so ass lol
Wasn’t expecting unmarked NSFW porn on the TL today. The team effort to beat the Heat that series was insane
I feel like that could’ve been a double bang
Breen pauses after the first bang searching for how to encapsulate the moment, you can tell the double bang wasn’t part of his repertoire yet
JET got the trophy tattoo before that season
that’s legend
If there’s a better example of calling your shot in sports I can’t think of any
Totally forgot it was like THAT
One of the best playoff runs by a team ever
Cough cough MFS!
Basketball in that era was hitting different or am i just nostalgic
Probably a little of both. I think a lot of it has to do with the explosion of the internet now. You get sooo much information and just stupid posts about anything and everything that it just feels different. 08 felt completely different than the more recent celtics championship but 08 had Kobe. Watching peirce rondo, ray and KG beat a legend was special for me.
Basketball just felt more personal and prideful for some reason then
When basketball was pure basketball and not analytics and all-around content
Nah for sure. Even that Finals Mavs crowd is better than the Knicks crowd today (which is considered one of if not the best crowd in the league today)
Just pure basketball fans. No influencers and regulars in sight
The NBA has always had influencers at games. They just weren’t called influencers, they were called celebrities. The difference is that back then the celebrities would go to be seen, but they wouldn’t bring their own camera crew making everything about them.
Hand Down. Man Down. Bear Down.
Incredible moment! Here’s my pov of that shot https://youtu.be/EdDvoUVkBg4
Lebron would later get his revenge on jason terry by dunking him through the hoop when he was a celtic
In a regular season game lol
The only way he knows how to do it
How long after Brandon knight was that?
Lebron wasn’t the only brick wall the Mavs had to overcome that year playoffs
yea they did a number on the champs, Kobe and the Lakers. They were swept! wasnt even close.
What he say fuck me for?!
terry the true Jet over kenny smith
Kenny was pretty instrumental in those Rocket back to back championships
This feels like a lifetime ago.
I was told LeBron can guard 1-5
Jordan would blocked that so hard it ended up in his basket for 3 points.
Pretty impressive how LeBron was able to bounce back legacy wise after this shit show
He took a beating. First season after the Decision. Also this series was the one he caught heat for saying something like “yall have to go back to your regular lives after this”. Which I thought was blown out of proportion, but it wasn’t a good look. That summer was open season.
This was the game that Lebron and Wade mocked Dirk’s sickness beforehand
Get fucked
As a Bron fan, this was both annoying and awe inspiring to watch at the same time. Just shows how much better the opposition Bron had to face in his time. Hardest Ring earned.
lmao
