I think the advanced take is that come playoff time having PG on the court with Tatum in crunch time is more valuable than JB. In a way I personally think this year’s team will be better than the last two.

There are also potential trades to consider but essentially I do not think this is some reboot year, I think this team is title contender.

Anything on r/nba is to be taken with a grain of salt. Theres obviously other reasons that Brad traded brown that he will never say. whether it be analytics, browns comments about his “favorite season” etc. hes been throwing around that is why Brown was traded this year rather than next etc. because TBH there was nothing forcing us to trade brown this summer. theres an argument you could’ve signed brown, rode it out the next 3 years, gone into the 2nd apron for a move, and then traded brown. but clearly Brad didn’t think Brown/tatum and roleplayers is a winning combo anymore or something changed in their on court dynamic.

or maybe Brad saw tatum/brown underperform together in 3 of the last 4 postseasons in embarrasing fashion and just doesn’t think the pairing fits anymore. who knows. We were all shocked when brad blew up the team after game 7 ECF loss to Miami, 2 years removed from a finals. but it was a clear message “these guys need to be choke proofed so i’m building a superteam”

But also, Brad probably thinks in this 2nd apron era there really is two options to build a team.

you have a supermax player surrounded by High end roleplayers/maybe one lower tier allstar. (kind of how the knicks are built, but no one would say they have a guy of tatums level).
you have both guys at 70% of the cap. but that second guy is another clear top 5-10player.

I highly doubt Brad has 7 FRP, a TPE and Georges contract next summer just to keep.

You hit the nail on the head there about the Jays not being able to close the deal in the playoffs. Look at all the help it took to get those guys over the hump. At some point you either have to earn what we pay you for or get going. JB had a great regular season but he wasn’t good in the playoffs without other star players to take the pressure off of him. They weren’t good the year before because KP & Jrue weren’t 100% and they played with their food against the Knicks. We all know what happened with that. Tatum tearing his Achilles overcompensating when the series should’ve been over in 5. JB tearing his meniscus. It was a disaster because they couldn’t put those guys away soon enough.

I can tell you PG was the best move because it’s the one Brad decided to make. I trust the front office far more than the media and/average fan.

And he’s, I am suggesting that when playoff time comes around and reasonably healthy PG is > JB due to spacing and team defense. This may not be the case on every team as JB has been shown to be a tough shot make and iso score but on this team, being an off ball shooter with length is better. Ball should be in Tatum hands virtually as often as possible. PG just played with two high usage players, he will have no issues with this. Brown would have issues with this and to be fair they would be reasonable complaints as he can carry an offense, just not one with championship aspirations because of his limitations on offense as compared to actual #1’s.

Or maybe PG is gone at deadline….or hurt? Who knows.

Celtics will win 55 games next year and should go further in the playoffs with how they’re currently constructed.

We’re pretty deep as well! I have no idea how the rotation will look because there’s so many players that will deserve mins.

I’m fine with Pritchard being the lead guard & White at the 2. Hopefully that’ll take some strain off White & his shot will start to fall again. I believe Pritchards starting struggles last season was all mental & he’s gonna have to slay those demons if he’s taking “the Jalen Brunson” jump as it’s being reported. I believe he’s more than capable..

I can tell Tatum is super excited about next year. Hes moving wayyy different this offseason like he knows this is His team now & hes going to prove it! He’s beaming with confidence now & he’s going to love playing alongside PG13. Our team is essentially the same but better. JB was great but he had his flaws (tunnel vision, silly turnovers, free throws struggles etc). PG13 will bring none of that. We don’t need him to average 28 ppg. If he can stay healthy, he can give us at least 20ppg and take pressure off Tatum in high pressure moments. I feel good about next season. I criticized Joe a lot with how last season ended but I trust he will learn from it & excel with this group.

I do think the Celtics will still be good but I do think they are worse without JB. I love Tatum but JB has been more clutch and pretty much was the biggest reason we beat the maps because of the pressure he put on Luka. He was shopped across the league and the market decided this was his value. This is not a Luka situation where Brad contacted one team and took a bad deal.

Not sure how his value would increase down the road when he’s aging and will begin negotiating his next contract in two weeks.

He clearly got traded for basketball reasons, Brad is just a gentleman. He is not worth his contract under this current CBA.

That’s a new take. I can kinda see that being the case but I don’t think it had all that much impact. The GMs already had their feelings about JB before the trade and I don’t see how it would have changed his value.
