[Highlight] Nick Martinelli jump shot free throws vs. the Timberwolves last night. He went 3⁄4 from the line.
Dude uses FT to practice his mid-range game, that’s just efficient.
He should take frees the the threes
Frees the the threes indeed
Flair checks out
I am all for wierd FT mechanics if they work.
I remember hearing during the FIBA world cup that one league (I think it was in the Philippines) that banking in FTs was the norm, and that as a whole the league was a much higher percentage than the NBA from the line.
Its Korea https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/167ab61/interesting_trend_from_the_korean_basketball/
In general, I think players should use the backboard a lot more than they do.
I am honestly shocked that smart and crafty passers don’t use it. Like an ATO play to try to get the ball to Jokic in the low post with him throwing a “lob” off the backboard over the rim to a crashing AG for the dunk seems impossible to defend. Have Gordon do like a fake clear out to make it look like an ISO then quick change of direction to have him crash the opposite side of the rim.
Get this - in Game 7, 2OT of the 1957 NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics had a two-point lead after Cousy split a pair of FTs. The Hawks were inbounding the ball under their own basket.
This was before the three-point line, and before the ability to advance the ball to half-court. So, the Hawks needed to draw up a play to attempt to send the game to 3OT. During their last time-out, their player/coach informed the team that he had been practicing throwing the ball from one baseline to the backboard at the other end, and said he would do just that, having the ball land in the hands of their star player, Bob Pettit.
So, the player-coach subbed himself in, chucked the ball the full length of the court and off the backboard and, sure enough, straight into the hands of Pettit. Pettit took a 15-foot jumper to send the game into 3OT… but missed the shot.
It was the start of the Celtics dynasty.
Off topic, but I used to play adult league indoor soccer and using the boards made for some awesome plays.
Indoor soccer was amazing.
I loved being able to use the walls to set up passes or get around a defender.
I havent played in 15 years, but now that ive been back in the gym, that sounds really fun and I should look up if I have any local indoor arenas.
In general, I think
I mean
Therefore, in general, I am.
I have a friend who is a bad shooter, but always drills 3 straight free throws in 21 because he just slams it off the backboard
I got a team mate who shoots one handed and he still always only hits about 2⁄10 lmao. How much worse is two handed gonna be?
He would double the hands, which would half his percentage. He’d go 1⁄10. That’s just math.
There should be a hell of a lot more folks doing it underhand/granny style out there
Landed on the line on the first one smh
Isnt this not allowed
I think i read somewhere that wilt got jumping on free throws banned because he was laying it up from the line or something
Only if your feet pass the line the free throw is disallowed. You can shoot however you want and wherever you want, you only have to stay on the half circle until the ball hit the rim
I vaguely remember seeing JR Smith (in his Nuggets days) shooting free throws from further past the free throw line, I think he wasn’t outside the circle but he was pretty much at the arch of the top of that line.
I believe it was way early in a season and he was just trying it out, it didn’t last long as I never saw him shooting those deep free throws after that
JR Smith’s problem was that he couldn’t shoot free throws while heavily contested. If that were allowed, he’d be 95%+
*disallowed. Sorry couldn’t help myself
No.
Contested free throws are currently disallowed.
Did you miss the Nick Van Exel days? He was closer to the top of the key than the free throw line. I modelled my free throw shots after him.
He jumped past the line at the one he missed
True, the refs should’ve stop the game by rules, but they won’t do that in a summer league game on the second quarter of a meaningless game
TIL. Thank you for this!
If you know ball you remember the Nick Van Exel FTs
He stood 3 feet behind the free throw line when shooting free throws
While I’ve always thought it was jumping in general that isn’t allowed, I’m guessing the rules must specify that jumping forward is what’s not allowed.
And this is our average basketball fan everybody. The amount of times I look at comments on a post in this or other basketball subreddits and think, “man that guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” And get frustrated over it… I’ll just remember that the average user doesn’t know something as fundamental as the rule about jumping over the foul line being against the rules, and actually confuses that with thinking the rule says you just can’t jump at all. Just an outstandingly simple and fundamental rule that i learned when i was 6 years old somehow misunderstood by people who think they can contribute to conversation. Reddit will continue to reddit lmao
And this is the worst type of reddit comment, condescending and rude rambling instead of just saying “yeah that’s right” and moving on
Every free throw I ever took was with my feet on the ground cuz that’s how I learned to do it. I was like a 75% free throw shooter, so not elite but good enough. It’s been so damn long since I played organized basketball though, sorry if you got mad that I don’t remember a rule that doesn’t even need to be thought about 99.9% of the time lol
All good. Nothing to be sorry for. You asked a question, accepted new information or relearned old information and grew. As long you are a fan of the sport and enjoy watching it you are good. No need to be pretentious about who and who can’t be apart of the basketball discussion. Not everyone can get deep into advanced statistics or play competitively at a high level. Why not be kind and welcoming? Just a nicer way to live. Cheers
Dude is just talking out of his ass, really wanted to sound smart. If he learned to jump on free throws as a kid, he was taught terrible fundamentals lol
It’s also just so dumb to imply fans are “lesser” if they didn’t play the sport. I played basketball, but I didn’t play football, baseball, or hockey. Am I not allowed to follow or talk about those sports? Lmao some people on the internet just gotta find stuff to make themselves feel better I guess
You are so annoying. And you seem proud of it. Hope you figure out whatever is wrong with you to need to pump yourself up about your knowledge of a child’s game and talk down about people that dont know as much as you about the minutia of a ruleset for that child’s game.
I agree with everything you said besides it being a “child’s game” it’s a game for everyone
There’s a way to make all the same points without being a dick about it, and welcoming new fans to the sport.
How about “this is how the rule actually works, it doesn’t come up all that often in real life. As a side note, remember that some of the people are arguing with you on reddit don’t know the rule either, but would rather just lie about it instead of asking and learning. Understandable, because some people are dicks to people who are still learning.”
You can do whatever the fuck you want as long as you stay in the half circle and dont leave until it hits rim
He was dunking from the line.
Because he was secretly an x man or something. Wilt was a one off.
Players don’t usually jump because it adds more variables that can affect consistency. If you want to jump up for your free throw, by all means do that.
He was dunking from the free throw line during free throws. Thats why they added the rule that you can’t cross the free throw line until the ball touches the backboard or rim.
Jesus. why would this be illegal? how do you not know rudimentary rules?
U bum
you moron
I remember when Whiteside started doing this and his FT% shot way up. Whatever works.
Just like me. Except Id go 1⁄4
Google says a typical NBA player will shoot 50 to 200 free throws per day in practice. Gilbert Arenas claimed he shot 3000 FT’s in a single night.
Seems like jumping on every attempt would put a lot of unnecessary stress on Martinelli’s knees. Probably not a big deal when he’s 22, but over the course of his career that could be hundreds of thousands of (small) jumps putting extra mileage on his body.
Well maybe since it’s more like his actual shooting form, he can kind of get a 2 for 1 benefit when training so he can reduce the FT practice and some of the shooting specific drills.
I don’t think its about the stress on the knees as much as it is the variability on your little hop when you take the shot. Its easier to gage your mechanics and feel your way through the shot if you keep your feel planted through the course of the game. The little hop would change as the game goes on and fatigue takes hold. You need a consistent routine at the line and the jump adds unnecessary inconsistency.
Tennis players do the split step jump Everytime before a shot and sometimes multiple time for every time they hit ona hard court, Martinelli will be fine
You’re trying too hard to show knowledge, it’s just a small jump from a free throw line lol
With the way these people practice and play, I’d say that this style of free throw adds 0.05% of milage to his knees.
He’s not jumping to his max vertical he’s going to be fine with that bunny hop. By that logic nba players shouldn’t be walking and should travel by an electric rascal because walking puts unnecessary stress on the knees.
My elementary school coach told me this was illegal
This will come as a shocker, but many adults lied to you at that time because you wouldn’t understand the real reason why
Hal Greer lives!
I’m still waiting for someone to just say fuck it and do granny shots
crazy
Btw, that’s just terrible work from the production crew there deciding to not let us get a full view of the jump shot especially after getting the full shot on the first attempt (seemingly by accident, I guess)
Get paid millions to suck at free throws it’s laughable
That’s just fucking stupid. Who is this man’s coach?? No no no
Awful, not a single coach in the history of basketball would recommend jumping while shooting a ft lol. It’s supposed to be a repeatable shot, identical every time.
Shooting free throws like this seems reguarded. They should read Dr Amberry’s book. It could probably help him a lot. Every nba player should be atleast 75 percent
Why can’t y’all just say “dumb” instead of that childish bs?
Childish? This commenter is clearly 38 years old, what else could the 88 in their username be for…
It’s because the commenter was born reguarded. It isn’t his fault.
