One thing I am noticing in this sub is that people are starting to conflate the value of Paul George the contract with the value of Paul George the player. Paul George, IMO, is a great fit with this team on the basketball court. In many ways, he’s the wing version of Derrick White. So, I’m excited about the basketball this year and the potential of great on-court chemistry.

He really is gonna be excellent when he plays: the Horford load management plan will hopefully result in 50 excellent games.

I’m really hopeful that this season results in PGPOO: Paul George (potentially) opting out to re-sign a (steep) discount.

PG and JT (and DW) should be really effective together. If they like playing together, and if PG can be sold by Brad on how a discount gets PG a title or two, then paying PG and DW ~35% of the cap would make a lot of sense.

If PG opts out and signs a cheaper AAV extension, how would we later add players to the team salary wise? The TPE we have expires at the deadline so would it just be through free agency using exceptions and the Hauser contract?

It’s complicated and definitely involves PG doing what Harden is doing for Cleveland this summer. They’ve got a deal but it isn’t holding any cap space until it’s official.

Somehow people are convinced Tatum, white, and podcast p is better than embiid, JB, Maxey, and vj. 4 elite rim pressure guys vs 1. If we can even say that post-Achilles injury. I can say with near certainty we will be last in the league in paint points once again.

But I guess go team and yeah we’ll somehow trade pg for a superstar better than brown and paid less next year!

The idea that we can’t find a trade for Paul George when he’s an expiring, we have around 4-5 tradeable firsts, and 4 players making under $10M next year who will be 27 or younger (Harper, Scheierman, Gonzalez, Cenac), personally I find it ridiculous people are dooming about Paul George until we see what the Celtics do next summer.

On that note, feel like some people are just assuming more star players = a better team when we’ve seen time and time again that that’s not the case. Philly and Miami have more star power than us but the fit for both is pretty weird. This version of the Celtics fits together really well when healthy, and I expect a great season of team basketball

I am not backing this “guaranteed imminent doom” stance that a lot of Celtics fans seem to have. Paul George is a great player when healthy, and Tatum has one of the highest win percentages of all time when actually getting superstar usage. This roster is still one of the top teams in the NBA. Celtics also have the $27m TPE to use & there is a good amount of free agents remaining after we already landed Mitch Robinson & Mike Conley. This is going to be a fun, positive season and I wish more C’s fans would recognize that.

Last weekend in Las Vegas, as the National Basketball Players Association debuted its new executive director, David Kelly, he and NBPA president Fred VanVleet made it clear they are not fans of the second apron or its impact.

“It’s not good for fans. Not good for players. I don’t think the (general managers) love it, although they may not say it on the record. Coaches don’t love it. The only people who really seem to really love it are the owners,” Kelly said in a July 10 interview with The Athletic. “Then, I think it’s gone too far. So whether it’s an unwinding of it, or a softening of the apron, or tweaking it, we can call it whatever we will. But … I do think it’s gone too far.”

“I think those teams would generate more revenue, would grow the game, would have more fan interest, if they could invest (in their rosters),” he said. “So you’re preventing teams from investing in an investment that would actually generate more revenue for the owners, for the league and for the players. … So 51 percent of what? I think the game would be growing more.”

Kelly said the NBA could still have parity without a second apron, or even one that isn’t as restrictive. He pointed out that five different teams won titles in the five years preceding the 2023 CBA.

“If you look at the points in time when the game really grew, you had some dynasties and then you had some competition,” Kelly said. “New teams that that came up. It was all about competition. You did not have an artificial sort of, like, break or gate on spending. And the game grew.”

Kelly has no choice: his employers - extremely stupid money management people like CJ McCollum - did not understand the CBA they signed and some of the Vice Presidents are having a bad summer because they are “overpaid”.

Fewer players making “the max” is good for everyone - fans, teams, other players - and bad for a very small number of players (who want max money).

Kelly has no choice but to say this nonsense. His Vice President wants a max extension, believes he isn’t overpaid, and shouldn’t have been traded because he is overpaid and wants a max extension.

This CBA ensures the Lakers don’t spend three times what Charlotte can spend. That’s great for the entire League, including the Celtics.

I think that’s an oversimplification of it and just softening the second apron doesn’t move the needle.

One of the issues is that it’s still so new that teams are still in the process of figuring out how to build a roster under it.

But the bigger part for me is that the max contract structure is broken and has bad incentives. The low end max for rookie extensions is too low, the supermax is too much higher than the regular max, and having the max contract increase as players get older artificially pushes teams to dump older players in favor of younger ones.

Mir me i think there should be one max contract that applies to everyone, and it should be higher. Then let teams actually negotiate with players instead of just having it be an automatic that any near star player gets the max.

Yeah this is a really good point.

Even if Wemby held out and waited for the bigger max he’d still be 10m/y cheaper than Embiid. Signing early means he’s 20m/y cheaper.

As it stands, you could sign Wemby and someone like Ayo Dosunmu for the price of a +30-year-old you’ll have to load manage.

They’re both max players, but the guy with his whole career ahead of him is significantly more valuable.
