Agree and I have the same thought about them - if I were a billionaire the first thing I’d do is live wherever the fuck I want, and who cares about the cost.

One answer is that anyone who views it the way I do, would likely not be a billionaire because they (or I) would retire long before reaching a billion. You (usually) become a billionaire by pushing for more money long past the point that you have more than you’ll ever need.

If your attitude was “I’ll live in NY/CA, don’t care about the state taxes” it’s also probably “I have $50 million, I’ll retire now, money can’t buy the extra time”.

But Lebron is a little unusual in that he’s still playing, not just for money, but for his legacy and shit. So for him it is a little weirder for him to care about state taxes (not that he’s actually said he does).

Nah, don’t be so demoralized over it. These guys pay plenty of taxes. They are subject to state taxes in every state they play as well as federal. There is mechanisms to invest in real estate and businesses to create write-offs and reduce your exposure, but to get to the volume of, “no-taxes” against millions of income pretty much requires fraud.

The IRS and state/s have plenty of resources to chase millions of tax liabilities because the ROI is overwhelming.

However, if LeBron can claim residence in Texas rather than California, then his \(50m/year (wild guess) Nike endorsement is subject to \)0 state tax as opposed to $6-7m and that is completely above-board and requires no creative accounting.
