Only showing 7 of his 11 championships.
The best offensive weapon of the 11x champions was the fastbreak. It was so synonymous with the team that people referred to it as “running a Boston.” And the key to their fastbreak was when Russell rips down the missed opposing shot and, as Oscar Kahan of the Sporting News put it, ”ignites a veritable tornado, triggering the Celtics’ attack and sprinting along with his fast-breaking teammates.”
Russell was such a dominant defensive player that the best offensive weapon of the greatest NBA dynasty ever was, in essence, Russell’s defensive rebound.
Yep. Dude was decades ahead of his time. Could be a rotational big in the NBA today.
Rotational? He’d be a hall of famer top 3 all time regardless of when he played.
I meant if you straight up plucked him as he was.
Billy GOAT Russell
There’s no otha reason why. The Celtics are the balls
I never realized the Hawks Jay connection. St. Louis Hawks -> Atlanta Hawks
more rings than fingers. what more can you say?
Teams win. Russell was the best player on the best team; that’s way different from being the GOAT individual basketball player.
This man got drafted to a playoff team that, in his rookie season, rostered the league MVP and the ROY that wasn’t him. Have him switch teams with Wilt Chamberlain, there ain’t no way he still ends up with more rings.
He was the goat of the pre merger I’ll give him that.
Jordan did not have the physical advantage of size that Russell did and yet averaged TWICE as many points per game over 15 seasons (to Russell’s 13) while considered Top Three all-time defensively.
GOAT is always Jordan.
Bill Russell was that big of a guy he was about three inches taller than him and weighed about 215-220 pounds when he played in the nba, and Jordan is a shooting guard. Let’s also take into account that bill Russell isn’t a horrible offensive player.
He wasn’t a good offensive player. Your starting C posting below league-average scoring efficiency isn’t ideal.
Wilt Chamberlain was arguably a better rebounder - certainly in their head to head matchups he was - and the limited data we have available indicates that he was also a more prolific shotblocker as well. The 60s collectively made up their minds that scoring wasn’t necessarily the most important thing and that’s awesome, but Russell was like the 4th option on offense.
If we’re calling you the GOAT as a 4th option, don’t you need to be way more valuable at everything else than the guy who averaged 50 ppg then years later lead the league in assists? Because even if you were to argue that Russell was the greatest defender/rebounder ever, he’s not exactly head and shoulders better at it than Wilt was.
6’10” to be accurate to Jordan’s 6’6”…and 15pts per game is not NBA good, sorry. Also Russell’s 7’4” wingspan to Jordan’s 6’11”.
Nobody would agree with you.
Ave Assists 5.3 Jordan to Russell 4.3.
The average height of a center hasn’t changed very much. Russell wasn’t necessarily that big.
There is clear change over 30+yrs nevertheless and it was Russell’s physical gifts that included a 7’4” wingspan which upped his advantage. Research before you try to jump in so empty-handed.
Why don’t you research? Having a large wingspan historically doesn’t mean anything. Tacko Fall became a perennial all star, right?
