“To Be Transparent, It’s Weird”: Jayson Tatum Gets Honest on Jaylen Brown Getting Traded
Based.
People shit on Tatum for being corny or whatever, but he’s got to be top five in “best head on his shoulders” as far as high profile basketball players go.
Lotta people prefer the NBAs of Our Lives soap opera to actual basketball, and Tatum is a terrible soap opera character. He’s a relatively private person, responds calmly to situations like this, and is clearly very media trained.
Real Housewives of the NBA ass basketball fans
idgaf the shenanigans is fun
Dude just hoops and raises his kids. I fucking love it
Tim Duncan with baby moms
ie: the ‘No Aura’s bullshit. Shiiiiiit if aura means you gotta act like housewife the fiuuuuuuuuuck that
He’s so reasonable and it’s going to serve him very well for a long time. I think it only helps his game.
However, whenever he gets actually fired up on the court, or gets mad, I love it. I do think the team could use more of that from their leader instead of getting it from Joe. That was one thing I think JB did well last year. But you are who you are. And Tatum has nothing to apologize for.
Tatum reminds me of Brady in the sense that he is just a fucking ace when it comes to handling media narratives and tricky conversations. This is exactly what you want the star player on your team to say. The corny thing seems to be a meme here to stay, but I can’t think of a single time he’s said something and I’ve thought “that’s gonna be a problem” or “oof wish he said that differently”
Couldn’t agree any more, and I get why it’s polarizing. It was with Brady and all of the Patriots of the era. I love me a nice true winner’s mindset
We really do have new versions of Brady and Belichick in terms of how JT and Mazzulla handle the media
That’s a great comparison.
Tatum is a boring guy, and that is perfect for us. No fuss, no drama, just focused on basketball. I never believed that Tatum and Jaylen had any beef, even if they may not be friends off the court, and I have no issue with that.
One of the most relatable star personalities for us boring regular guy fans not overly interested in the spectacle
He tattooed “Gods Plan” across his back, and added the possessive apostrophe later.
Now I really love him.
For grammar. Not religion
People hate on JT because he is well spoken and tends to say the politically correct thing.
People hated on JB because he was outspoken and controversial.
Seems like people just going to hate regardless.
Don’t forget they are Boston sports stars. People used to hate Tom Brady for being too handsome.
Good thing he went and got a bunch of work done so now he’s just weird looking
Throwback to this gem on JT
https://np.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/1dto76s/jayson_tatum_hater_explains_himself_funny/
Used to hate Tom Brady for being too handsome lol
I mean, people still do.
But I suppose they also used to :)
That pretty much sums it up, sadly.
They’ve always been fire and ice
Hello welcome to the internet
They both sound like Kyrie, with the weird grammar and third person plural speaking about themselves. The difference is JB also has Kyrie’s narcissism, thinking anything that happens on earth is about him and is here to oppress him. JT just wants to win.
Tatum talks like he was trained by Crash Davis
Dude just says what’s on his mind and it’s never over the top. I’m not saying you’re slighting him, but every time he talks people act like he sounds a certain way like he’s not entertaining them.
I actually feel what he’s saying. People write the narrative and then everyone is waiting on his words, seeing if they can twist something as a slight to JB. If they can’t they’ll just say he’s not balling his eyes out so he must not give a shit.
He just sounds politically media trained. Whereas JB was like “they packed me up bro”
Like when Perk told Eddie House to talk black live on the air? The whole concept is weird.
People are assuming he’s doing PR talk but people speak differently in different settings. I talk different with my childhood friends than I do at work, different with my grandmother than anybody else, etc. It’s not fake just how I’m comfortable talking. We all do it to some degree.
Kinda on that note, I think JT literally treats most of his media appearances as part of his “work”. And it makes sense to me cause it can definitely affect his job as a player/teammate. I feel like there have been glimpses of JT being more open (like maybe on Teague’s podcast and then when he’s with his family), but for the most part I don’t know why it’s so surprising that someone talks differently at work events than they do in their personal life. I guess we’re just used to seeing players like JB and Ant talk more freely
Almost like media training is part of being in the NBA or something 😊
*Part of Duke Basketball. Seriously.
Lol yeah that’s true
Jayson “nuke laloosh” Tatum
He DOES still need a nickname…
No one needs a nickname.
JayTay or Jay0 Truz
When you get to the show, you can grow fungus on your shower shoes..
I remember his Mom saying in an interview that he used to want to do pretend NBA interviews when he was younger and he’d ask her to be the reporter.
Dude PR trained himself when he was like 8.
Actually incredible how Jaylen has done all this passive aggressive stuff and Tatum is taking 0 bait.
He’s so mature especially compared to Jaylen
“I have nothing, obviously, but love and respect for JB,” Tatum said. “It’s tough when you are a professional athlete, and everything we do is publicized and nitpicked.”
This is the nitpicking he’s talking about lol
And of course it’s a “Top 1% Commenter” account
that literally just means you got a lot of upvotes
Actually, I’m pretty sure it just means you comment a lot.
I don’t get a ton of upvotes, but I have the Top 1% commenter flair.
But I AM on here too much to be healthy.
Fairs.
It means upvotes
Relatedly, I couldnt believe this sub’s reaction to JB liking a video that shaded JT. Like come on, stop nitpicking something so irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. These two’s overall message has always been appreciative of the winning they did together
Yup. And we had an entire press conference about the trade, Brad making a point to say that JT was left out of it and JB was in good standing with the FO, and people have chosen to instead piece together instagram activity like one of those murder investigations where they connect photos on corkboard with string. Everyone had said how they feel, there’s no mystery at this point.
[deleted]
I think both things can be true. Can JT just come out and say we gotta keep Jaylen no matter what (like Steph did with Draymond at GSW)? Sure. But is Tatum also that guy who is going to LeBron management? He hasn’t shown that ever, and I think he’s going to trust Brad with the basketball decision-making.
Say this is true, that JB feels JT should have vouched for him (even though Brad said that he didn’t include JT in the conversation) - what does this mean for the Celtics? Literally nothing. JB is gone. Even if they hate each other - what does this mean for the upcoming season? Again, nothing.
Still sticking your head in the sand lol Jaylen has his mouth piece Tracy McGrady still making comments about Tatum, jaylens liking posts shading Tatum but we still can’t make any judgements.
I wish I was as naive as you
I just don’t pay attention to that stuff. JB is on the Sixers, both JB and JT say it’s nothing but love, and we have our team for this year. Anything past that you’re hooking yourself into whatever media personality is trying to get your attention for clicks. It’s sports not a soap opera.
I don’t view Jaylen as immature at all, personally.
He’s very professional with his craft, successful in outreach, great to the fans, and always made an effort in the community. Cares about education and the arts. Cares about equality, both racially and in relation to the current class system in our country.
Outspoken =\= immature
Outspoken rubs people the wrong way, and has throughout history.
Agreed, sad this point has to be mentioned.
Most of what you said is true but he’s also low key a quack. A more charming kyrie irving. No hyperbole. Ignoring some of his problematic stuff in the past like supporting kyrie/kanye, barely apologizing for posting support for a hate group, promoting a shitcoin (may or may not have been hacked), spending the entire finals run promoting a snake oil necklace, being low key anti vax… there’s the more recent stuff like picking fights with Stephen A Smith, claiming the media has a conspiracy against him (even though they gifted him FMVP and gave him more allstar votes than anyone in the eastern conference), suggesting the league has a conspiracy against him because he’s not a Nike guy, claiming the refs have a conspiracy against him.
That while claiming he’s the best player in the world and “innocently” making comments all season that any rational person would take as a dig at Tatum.
I’m not sure “immature” is the correct word for it. Eccentric? Tin hat? Self-aggrandizing pseudo intellectual with a victim complex?
He’s an entertainer.
It’s an entertainment business.
It’s a sport.
No shit.
If it wasn’t entertainment, no one would watch. If no one watches, there’s no massive TV deal that provides the players with a stage and income. Without the stage and income, the league ceases to exist.
Gifted him FMVP? Uhh he was clearly the FMVP that series, you may be the quack if you think otherwise. Picking fights with Stephen a smith is evidence hes a quack ? Wut. Room temp iq comment
It’s debated because Tatum was ahead in almost all measurable metrics, but JB may have been more important defensively or leadership wise, maybe more clutch at times. I wouldn’t have been mad with either one winning it.
Love you consistently ignore other positive off court stuff and focus on negative off court stuff. Not entirely different from your on court analysis of him so at least you’re consistently biased. Man’s not on the team anymore and you still post paragraphs.
Why do I need to post the positives when sharing examples of how he’s a low key quack.
Yeah there’s positives too. But he’s a bit of a quack.
He’s great, he’s just had a tendency to say some half-baked things out loud. Like crying conspiracy about the refs for example – a player with a 100% perfect maturity would handle that differently, because the way JB handled it was really easy bait for haters to just say “look at him whining about the refs after he dribbles the ball off his foot”
I personally find that more real/relatable than a lot of things we see from athletes.
He isn’t just outspoken. He sees so many things as insults. I wouldn’t necessarily attribute that to immaturity. It is a personality trait.
But we all have our warts. Not a big negative as a person. Definitely can add challenges in a work environment.
I think he takes every opportunity he can to put a chip on his shoulder. It’s helped him improve basically every year of his career, so I can’t fault him for it.
That trait is basically how we overachieved last year. He led with a chip on his shoulder, and the rest of the Cs followed (especially the young guys). Honestly I thought we were tanking for AJ and then Jaylen just said fuck it we are not losing. He might have screwed up Brad’s original plan after all lol
Yea, and kind of a bummer that Brad, or whoever said nah to all that
I mean claiming that everything said or done is disrespectful is kinda immature.
!!!
Outspoken is fine. Some of his political views and comments can be polarizing. He’s making a shit ton of $ to play a game, so not sure how he’s relating with the current class system.
He also comes off as egotistical and greedy.
Yea, and it’s kinda sad that it gives me that people are just dog whistling ‘uppity black guy’ here. Now I’m for sure not saying racist Boston, but I am saying racist world.
Can’t qwhite understand why
Nah i really dont think thats it, lame
Mmmm it kinda is. The whole crowd of people being annoyed by Jaylen being intellectual (or calling him a fake intellectual) or having thoughts & opinions, not just “shutting up & dribbling”? That shit is racism bro. You don’t ever hear that stuff aimed at a white athlete. Ever.
Maybe they just feel like the whole intellectual thing is forced? People dont even really hate they just make fun of it. Watch his interview where he says he really loves philosophy and the interview asks him his favorite philosopher. He clearly wasnt ready to answer.
Ok but have you ever seen or heard this allegation of phoniness/fraudulence aimed at a white athlete? I submit you haven’t. I haven’t. This should tell you something.
Especially given the context that, to a person, everyone who actually knows Jaylen personally all remark on him being a very sharp, thoughtful, intelligent person.
Is he super well educated? Not on paper, he was a professional path athlete who went to college for one year. But I was super well educated on paper & went to school with a lot of fucking dummies.
Fact that his interest in intellectual pursuits pisses this weird cadre of people off so much should make you question why it is they have such strong opinions about somebody else’s interests & why
I cant even think of a white athlete who is known for being an intellectual or leans into it in their branding. So kind of a niche argument to make
Eta: i can think of a comparison actually, aaron rodgers. Plenty of people hate him and view him as a phony intellectual
I think the critique of Aaron Rodgers is about the quality of his opinions- anti-vax, anti-mask, Trumpism, etc, which are all the hallmark of dipshit know nothings.
The fact that “you can’t think of a white athlete…” literally proves my point. Because that whole line of thought only springs into existence when people start saying someone’s intellectualism is forced/faked whatever. If you actually believe that there do not exist any white athletes with the same interests or sense of self that JB has, then all I can say is that you are a victim of your own framing. There absolutely are guys just like Jaylen but nobody gives a shit bc it doesn’t offend anybody’s sensibilities about who gets to behave as if they consider themselves interested in intellectual things or to be smart or whatever.
just stop
So you’re saying Stephen A. Smith hates black folk?
Your argument kind of goes out the window when his biggest media enemy is also…checks notes…a black dude.
“His biggest enemy”
Bro SAS is a media personality who piggybacks onto any angle he thinks will get him attention- that’s his job. It’s not germane to the discussion.
“Hates Black folk” - this is where you kinda show your ass here, respectfully. Racism doesn’t require hatred to be racism, & the misperception that it does is behind a lot of the preservation of racist structures.
Again, have you ever heard or seen the criticality of JB’s intellectual interests/pursuits aimed at a white athlete? You haven’t, bc it’s not a thing, & that should tell you something.
Nobody ever critiques a white athlete for having opinions (though in the case of Trumpist dipshits, people might critiques the opinions themselves) or for having non-athletic, “intellectual” interests, & no one ever presumes those interests are fraudulent posturing.
If Derrick White was bitching like JB, I’d think the same thing. It’s not racism to think someone is not as intelligent as they claim to be. Dude was VP of the union and didn’t see that the second apron might fuck up teams?
The very fact that you think JB is “bitching” is kind of a tell. I’m not saying that’s coming from a racial place necessarily, but it’s definitely a highly unsympathetic approach to a guy who just got dumped by the team he’s given his all to his whole career in a city he loves & cares about. Ie you have an axe to grind where you approach everything dude does predisposed to be very negative.
“As they claim to be” how tf do you presume to know how intelligent JB “claims to be” lol? You don’t. & if you’re mad about how you perceive someone you don’t know irl to be carrying themselves, that’s on you my brother.
As a certified highly intelligent person all my life (you’re just gonna have to take my word for it ) I can’t tell you how many times dumb people feel uncomfortable simply bc one’s intelligence makes them aware of their own dumbness, & their critique will be exactly what yours is of Jaylen. When in reality it’s the same way short ugly guys dislike tall handsome guys, bald guys dislike guys who still have hair, & so on. This is how we got Trump, writ large.
& again, you would never in your life approach a white athlete with the same lens. You should ask yourself why
To be fair it’s a lot easier to give PR answers when you’re not the one who was traded for chips to a rival. I respect that JB hasn’t been toxic on the way out. I agree that he can be passive aggressive but he’s still been gracious and said great things about the city of Boston. He could have easily gone scorched earth and just shit all over the Celtics but he hasn’t.
He isn’t worth what he thinks so maybe scorching the team isn’t a good strategy. Hes a grown adult.
Exactly. I can’t exactly fault the guy for being mad when he was here a decade, had established roots here, and obviously felt that his tenure here both in terms of length and in terms of success on the court (his always getting better each off season) and community work off the court would have meant something to the organization higher-ups.
If anyone spent a decade at a job and was let go, you’d be upset about it, too.
So long as JB follows Cedric’s advice - take the high road, you’ll never win versus an organization - then I think it’ll be fine and thus far we haven’t heard anything else from him.
Community work isn’t winning rings. Christ ppl have anointed JB as a god. He’s acting like a spoiled brat.
I didn’t say it did nor did I imply he was untradeable. No one is. I get why Brad traded him.
I was saying that from JB’s perspective, he did good things on/off the court, so I get why he would feel in that sense that he would be valued by the higher-ups and wouldn’t warrant being on the trade block. I don’t think that’s outlandish. I’d bet most players, regardless of sport, feel that way about their respective roles on their teams.
Jaylen was the one who got traded, of course he’s the one who’s mad
He’s acting like a spoiled brat
Jaylen has been making passive aggressive comments since early last season
Easier to be mature about the situation when you werent the one shipped out though. If the celtics stuck JT in all these trade rumors and then kicked him out the door I’m sure he would be feeling some type of way as well.
Players get shipped out every year. Not sure why JB is making such a spectacle.
Well, he forced him out so it’s easy to take the high road
I’ll be honest, I would have some imperfect things to say too if I were in JB’s shoes
Nine years together and a championship, that’s a serious bond. Fair play to Tatum for keeping it classy while the media tried everything to split them.
You are so right on the media’s role here. It’s sickening.
Every summer there’d be ‘Tatum or Brown’ hot takes, as if they couldn’t coexist. The ring really shut that noise up.
Jaylen did his best to do that as well with the constant subtle digs at Tatum
Can we stop asking him about it? Even if he was sick of JB, hated his guts, begged for him to be traded and twice tried to have him killed, we’re still getting this answer.
If the org thought their best player was going to revolt over it, they’d not have done it. I don’t believe they ever asked him (they shouldn’t have either) but I’m sure it was a consideration.
You expect reporters to not ask the franchise player why the other franchise player got traded and how it makes him feel?
I’m suggesting they don’t ask him after he’s already answered it and especially knowing you’re only getting the politically correct answer, whether it’s the truth or not. It’d be like the Mrs asking if I slept around. Even if I’m bagging every housewife on our street, the answer is gonna be, “No, honey. I am not.”
Objectively terrible analogy.
It’s actually spot on. In either case, you’re not getting the truth. Weird I had to explain that.
I don’t think you’re necessarily wrong but A.) who cares man, not every question going to be asked once and B.) the analogy was spot on in terms of concept but you gotta refine the way it comes off a little lol
🤣 Ok, ok. It really doesn’t matter, you’re 100% right. The JB thing is all retreaded territory now, so it’s just obnoxious. There’s nothing new to discuss unless something leaks, eg, Tatum or JB made a demand. It’s just content farming. If there’s really a new angle, I’m all for it but so far it’s all the same.
Yeah nah I get you entirely man, it gets monotonous reading the same thing over and over haha
First day watching sports?
No matter what he says, it’s never good enough for ppl on the internet who don’t know him. It’s so weird.
Nothing he says will ever be good enough lol. They want him to say the Celtics were wrong and criticize an organization that he plays for lol
Please, come and tell me how JT don’t know ball.
Oh the poor media. They had to deal with the JB thing and the Vrabel thing at the same time and have revealed just how shitty they are.
He uses “obviously” frequently, for things that aren’t necessarily obvious. That’s up there with “you know” for athlete interview fillers.
I’m so glad Tatum is on the Celtics. Pure fucking class
After this trade I’m sure he doesn’t trust upper management as much. I know about the usage and everything but this is like the 3rd time he’s stated it’s surprising so if this weak ass plan by Stevens doesn’t work he might look elsewhere when he becomes a free agent
He’s not really being honest.
My demon backdoored him and been rolling out the same script all summer 🙏🏼
Tatum doesn’t owe Brown anything. JB been taking little shots for years. If he wanted loyalty from Tatum I guess he shouldn’t have been feeding narratives.
Shiet if I was JT I would have made the boss call years ago lmfao. Better man than me
And I think the fact that he didn’t says a lot about him. He’s been willing to sacrifice and be quiet for a long time.
