I’m glad ESPN recognized Collins with this award in an honorable way. It seems to me like the NBA did the bare minimum to even recognize his death and moved on quickly, probably to avoid conservative complaints about “wokeness”. Collins wasn’t just the first NBA player to be out, but he also was a model citizen. He deserved a lot more recognition than he got from the league.

no, it was complex. I knew Jason and his husband. He died on the same day as an active player from Memphis (Brandon Clarke).

It was during the playoffs, they had a moment of silence for both guys before the two games that were on that night.

The back side of the NBA float in the pride march was a huge image of Jason (on the float years before) as a memorial.

his husband has been caring for him and just went through a year of knowing his partner is going to die, I imagine he needs a bit of time off.

I think they filmed a lot of footage of his journey to Singapore to try and slow the cancer, his mindset was that maybe him doing this could help others in the future. There will probably be a documentary, and maybe some kind of foundation for LGBTQ+ youth sports.

it’s been like 2 months since he’s passed. Give it a little time for the dust to settle.

Really makes you wonder about other guys in the league. Statistically there would be quite a lot more gay players, but it’s clearly stigmatized to the point where coming out is a big challenge.

You can only really say this if you think there is no correlation between whether you’re gay and your likelihood of being in the NBA, and I highly doubt that correlation is 0. Representation matters, and gay kids don’t really have a lot of NBA players to look up to. Gay kids in sports still face a ton of homophobia.

I’m guessing there are a few gay players, but it’s almost definitely a way lower rate than the population at large and you can’t really look at the statistical rates as being indicative of what the rate is in the NBA.
