Steph Curry Sports Humanitarian Award Winning Speech: “Don’t ever forget that you have a platform, you have a voice, you have everything that you need to make a true impact”
No hate but I hate this type of shit lmao. The money, influence and plataform ratio to what they actually do is fucking low
Yea it’s all PR. We shouldn’t be looking at athletes or celebrities as moral inspirations.
Unless they are. Ali had his moments and truely inspirational leaders were at time horrible.
Ali probably stood by his convictions more than anyone else. He missed three years of his prime because he was a conscientious objector who refused to fight in Vietnam.
That’s not to say that other athletes haven’t done or don’t do good, but as a black man in 1967 there was a pretty reasonable expectation that he could have severe consequences. His case was eventually ruled on by the Supreme Court- that’s insane.
Imagine Steph Curry was drafted in 2012, refused and then was tried in court on criminal charges and spent three years fighting it until the highest court in the land ruled unanimously against his charges.
We know in hindsight how it worked out, but when we’re talking about athletes making only 200 million instead of 250 million giving up three years of your prime and being stripped of your title is heavy.
Actually we should be looking at people with money, power and influence to speak out more.
Whether that is big law firms or athletes worth hundreds of millions selling themselves to us.
I know this comment section is a Curry hate train, so I’ll get downvoted to hell, but whatever.
I went to college in the Bay Area and was very active in the public service/community volunteering center at my school. Through that, I worked with a number of charities and organizations throughout the Bay (South Bay, Peninsula, SF, East Bay) as a result. In the process, I met Steph *multiple* times doing pretty awesome charity work that (as far as I’ve seen) has never been covered on the Internet. It made me gain a lot of respect for him to see him out there.
I’m not saying you have to like Steph or whatever. But I just wanted to share that from my own lived experiences.
That doesn’t just go for Curry but for a lot of other athletes. I think a lot of athletes do charity work that doesn’t get covered.
I haven’t met Curry, but I have seen Festus Ezeli around at some charity related events I’ve been a part of. And I have a friend who works closely with Buster Posey and Andre Iguodala on a lot of charity events that don’t get any media attention.
Real recognize real. I used to work in the NPO circuit and I’ve seen Steph and Ayesha out and about since he was drafted to the Warriors, even before the fame and fortune. They deserve props for showing up and showing out as often as they do for the Bay Area.
And since you mentioned a few, I also wanted to shout out some athletes that were memorable in terms of the extra effort they took:
Festus has always been involved with the community, and he never makes a big deal out of it- he’s funded and made appearances at several school/youth events and definitely is as plugged in as anyone else I know- the Bay is very clearly his home as much as it is mine.
Matt Holliday, Matt Carpenter, Adam Wainwright from the Cardinals came by with some Giants (Scutaro and Pence among others) while they were visiting SF on a road trip specifically to do some community work, which was super cool considering it wasn’t their home and they just wanted to do some good.
David Akers literally helped me clean out a shit-ridden apartment for someone in need, without a word of complaint, and with as much grace and composure as he had kicking clutch FGs for the Niners, and I’ll forever respect him for that.
We really miss out on a lot of the good with all the drama posts. It made my day reading this thread. Keep on keeping on
Now ask a Palestinian kid about their lived experiences with Zafran and unit 8200.
Just don’t ever ask him for more housing.
World famous celebrity understandably wants a fence for his and his young children’s privacy against multi-million dollar townhouse/apartments that would have unobstructed view into their lives
redditors: meltdown
“The developer of the neighboring Oakwood property proposed building 16 multi-family, three-story townhomes. Because the townhomes were going to be three stories high, the Currys’ primary concern was that the new residents would have a direct, unobstructed view down into their private backyard and home.”
I’m sure your neighbors can see into your backyard. I don’t consider curry a special person who deserves any more privacy than anyone else. If he was so upset he should have bought the land or something.
Ok but where’s he gonna get the money to afford extra privacy /s
Yeah, as another Bay resident and former NPO worker- Steph shows up. And that’s huge for the community.
I know people struggling to pay rent that do more for their communities relative to whatever Stephen Curry has done.
I mean Eat Learn Play has actually been a great positive impact on the Oakland community, and Steph’s poured in tens of millions of dollars every year toward that and other things to benefit the Bay Area.
But glad you’re keeping track of everything he does both in public and behind the scenes to personally keep him and his family accountable for… not doing enough?
For real, slandering someone receiving a humanitarian award is a peak reddit moment
you’re talking out of your ass to hate. Steph has done a lot for the city of Oakland
Delete this
No tf you don’t lol. This sub is so absurd
[removed]
That’s not possible, without some change you can’t make a change
Do you know everything Steph has done to be making that statement lmao
Negative IQ
Stephen Curry’s “Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation” has raised and invested over $75 million to support Oakland youth through meal programs.
100% of the money raised by the foundation is spent back into the community since he personally covers administrative costs.
The foundation provided more than 1 million meals to children during the pandemic.
How can you say “no hate” directly followed by “but I hate…” lol
So the hate runs so deep, you hate even when it’s a Humanitarian award?
His organization has provided more than 35 million meals to kids and families.
Nice try with your first sentence tho.
He also directly invests in Israeli military tech companies used to commit genocide.
Just because ESPN doesn’t cover it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen
do u make an impact
Crazy how we expect private citizens to do more than the actual fucking government
Really hating on charity work now lol
Steph, or anyone else, is not obligated to do anything. If they get an award for doing some good so what
I say yes hate, especially bc of investments with IDF
Just change someone’s life, even just a little.
-Himmel the Hero
I’ve honestly never heard Steph have a strong take on anything.
Steph Israeli drones Curry?
Steph “no poors in my neighbourhood” Curry?
Steph “NFT pump and dump” Curry
That was Fox. Or did Curry do a rug pull too 😳
In Atherton, no one is poor, not even those living in affordable housing
I saw a YouTube documentary and there were “poor” people in designer clothing trying to tell the public that Atherton was friendly to low moderate incomes.
Yeah buddy ok
Ykw, I never heard the full story (I wasn’t spreading it either, mind you) but that’s actually somewhat reasonable.
Especially because they were mostly just asking for a fence to get rid of that problem and the city said no
Even crazier is he wanted to settle for a taller fence for his house but got rejected. Also the housing got built anyways.
He also lives in Atherton, affordable housing their has a completely different meaning than it would for most of the country
Also moon landing faked Curry
He didn’t want a multi story residential building that would have a direct view into his home. And he wasn’t allowed to put a taller fence up but he would’ve been fine with that. Also the buildings got built anyways
Yooo what’s the context here?
I’m assuming it’s this: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/steph-curry-investments-israel-tech-sector/
Another Israeli cybersecurity firm Curry has recycled his NBA dollars into is Upwind, a group founded by Israeli soldiers, Amiram Shachar, Lavi Ferdman, and Liran Polak, who met while serving in the elite Mamram Unit. Famous for selecting only the top 1% of applicants, Mamram is tasked with creating the technological backbone for the entire country’s military, including drones, missile systems, and the Iron Dome.
Mad… just goes to show the richer you are the worse you become as a human being
I think the Bible said something about this
I couldn’t give a shit about what a religious book has to say lmao
but Curry probably should
Too true 😂
Might as well give george bush a humanitarian award while we’re at it. Jesus christ.
I think he’s actually vegetarian
Okay it was explained to me he invested in a security equipment company founded by a guy who did mandatory service.
This is a lot more specific and gross.
No he invests in security with ties to the IDF
Source: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/steph-curry-investments-israel-tech-sector/
what do you think he means by impact?
He’s impacting on Gaza kids every day!
He also doesn’t want to live next to poor people
Didn’t he just say he wanted a fence for privacy?
This is a sensationalism thread, wrong crowd.
yeah. he basically just wanted to build his fence up a little higher to prevent people from looking into his yard, which is completely reasonable given his celebrity status.
If by “poor people” you mean “people buying multi million dollar townhouses” then sure.
No celebrity does, let alone someone worth hundreds of millions of dollars like Steph whose also one of the most popular celebrities on the planet. He can never live a normal life the rest of his days. So from his perspective, now he’s got to do what’s best for his families safety. Finding somewhere more secure and away from bad neighborhoods is just common sense.
That sounds very anti humanitarian….
That sounds like the real world.
Steph Curry in favor of a caste system
So do you know the full context of the story or are you just looking to post “gotchas” purity tests to look good?
How you think he won the award
I knew somebody would bring this up lolol
Similar to LeBron and all the stars. Along with all the rich people
steph “unit 8200” curry talking about making an impact 😬
Giving him a humanitarian award when he’s invested in a bringer of death company. Irony man
Stephanyahu from the logo…bang
Bang bang for the double tap
SPLASH
BETWEEN THE EYES (literally, with Steph’s monetary help).
In Steph’s defense it was a privacy reason. The 3 story building would be looking directly into their backyard. No homeowner would want that, I certainly wouldn’t. He even proposed that they build a taller fence or landscape it in a way that maintains their privacy but they were rejected. What do you want him to do?
[deleted]
Everyone is a YIMBY until it’s time to be a YIMBY
A fundamental part of being YIMBY involves supporting the relaxation of unnecessary building restrictions. We should be allowing people to have taller fences and maintain privacy while also building more density. That’s all Curry wanted. I don’t know why that is such a controversial stance, I don’t know anyone who is going to be happy that their backyard is going to be wide open for 3rd story units to peer into.
Everyone who lives next to a house that isn’t a ranch or apartment has to deal with this what the fuck are you talking about?
There’s plenty of places in the suburban world which don’t. If you’ve ever stepped foot in or driven through Atherton you’d realize you’re the one who doesn’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. It’s insane to think this is the hill to die on, just let people build taller fences so it’s easier to build housing. It’s like you want to make it harder than it already is to convince people.
Let’s ask Victor Yimbanyama
Victor would probably be the one looking into other people’s backyards
As long as Curry gets some privacy in his billion dollar backyard thats all that matters in the world ❤️
I mean yea, everyone should have privacy in their back yard, regardless of if they are rich or not. He’s got small kids running around, maybe in bathing suits when swimming. There are most definitely weird fucks out there who would stream it all online if they could.
My neighbors upstairs window looks directly into my back yard. Its totally normal. But Im also not a millionaire.
This. A good chunk of people living in dense areas have this “problem.”
They’d get in trouble, you have reasonable right to privacy in your backyard from above like that. And plenty of people have neighbors with vantage points that look right down into their own backyards, it’s a reality for many.
Yea but having a few neighbors surrounding you, esp people you get to know over time, is different than having an apartment complex behind you. And if you have to buy a house with an apartment complex right next to it, you can be sure it’s value would be nuked.
The fact you went from “oh everyone needs privacy!” to “well but the property value!” shows what sort of person you really are lol.
Aren’t those apartments $3,000 or more per month? You’re making it sound like the hood moved in behind him.
I live in a city with apartments right next to homes with backyards. There are multiple different homes that can look in on my yard. And you don’t really know anyone like that, voyeurs don’t really out themselves.
Bro has never lived in an urban setting or even looked up while visiting one.
Deal with it like the rest of us.
I’m very critical of him for his funding of Israel military tech but there was a situation where a fan trespassed into his house. Ayesha was home with the kids and the trespasser was looking to get something signed by Steph curry or something. I don’t blame them for not wanting people having viewing access into their house considering those circumstances
You’re not world famous like he is. People don’t care about looking into your backyard.
Fame doesn’t give you exclusivity to voyeurism
Tell that to my neighbors
Yea he asked for a fence in alternative lol
Shut the fuck and build a fence with his hundreds of millions of dollars.
He tried. God redditors always spout shit they have no idea about.
NIMBY with investments in a security company with ties to the IDF winning a humanitarian award
Can’t make this up
See the following:
just look at the inaugural fifa peace prize recipient. the elite are just openly mocking us now.
You beat me to it. What a sham of an award, and I can’t believe ESPN is still trying to force feed the ESPYs to sports fans.
“Humanitarian” awards and “peace” awards are all done for shit and giggles..someone somewhere needs to gas themselves up so they get handed an award…
Dude heavy invests in the Israeli military tech and is a fucking NYMBY
The guy investing in the Israel military winning the sports humanitarian award lmao
Like Obama winning the the Nobel peace prize
You too can grow up one day to ratfuck affordable housing.
He didn’t want a residential building looking directly into his home, you can rightfully be mad about the israeli ties but stop rehashing this super misleading take
Always fuckin hilarious when tbe stans come out saying guys like curry and lebeon do so much good for people. Na man have you seen the shit they invest in and who they hang with? Never idolize the rich except a select few.
Last 4 words were not necessary
You arent wrong. I was giving grace in case there are some mega rich people who I have never heard of who donate everything away without publicity
trust no billionaire but mackenzie scott seems to be doing her best to give away her wealth at least
AIPAC award ceremony?
*except if your are Palestinian.
or from Uyghur, China
Wow look at Stephenyahu, so inspirational
Right message, wrong messenger
Says the guy straight up giving money to Israel
After getting that China deal right Seth
IDF curry?
Has he ever used his platform to speak out about a years-long genocide? Or did he forget he has a platform?
that’s too much to ask from them actually
He was too busy helping fund it.
We’re not half way to being a $billionaire and actively supporting a genocide to make some extra money while receiving a humanitarian award.
Learn aCTuAl nuance, context, and common sense, sweetheart.
Yeah, idk what this dude is even talking about. Steph is a billionaire, he doesn’t need to invest in this. So people calling out a guy who wins a humanitarian award for investing in an organization that is committing a genocide shouldn’t be met with pushback.
Guy’s like Victor and Haliburton were direct talking about the Minnesota murder too while Steph just gave an indirect apolitical answer that was designed to show support, but not directly reference the murder that happened.
So him talking about use your voice in his speech is not the individual that would come to mind.
Do you think he sits down with his wife at the dinner table and goes over which war programs to invest in? Or do you think it’s more likely that he has someone that handles that for him?
Okay let’s focus on what Steph said here and I’d love to see some examples of him actually walking the talk
Damn Reddit sure is a miserable place sometimes lol
More than sometimes
okay Landlord
Every time I hear him talk, it sounds like he tries so hard to make his voice deeper
Drones are for the people
They were promised 3000 years ago!
He’s funding Israel!!!
Steph is such a humble humanitarian investing in Israeli drone companies.
investing in this comment section
Steph’s PR is crazy lol dude is coddled both on and off the court
I’m ngl i literally had no idea the espys was even going on today, crazy how much relevance awards shows like these have lost in the last couple years
Interesting I wonder how Steph feels about affordable housing and the IOF 🤔
And they use that platform to complain about not being able to survive off $40 million career earnings
Holier than thou bullshit
I do? No I’m pretty sure that’s you, Steph.
What the fuck kinda twighlight zone are we living in
They gave him an award for being a NIMBY?
Man is this annoying, almost none of these guys actually use their platform very often
How can you be a humanitarian if you have large investments in Israeli cyber security companies?
NIMBY GOAT
Reddit and kneejerk whataboutism gets exhausting.
Kneejerk Whatabolism? The guy whose investing into army that’s actively bombing kids is receiving a humanitarian award and talking about helping kids
this sub when a player who actually does stuff for his community encourages other athletes to do the same: 😡
“Brought to you by Carl’s Jr.”
-Steph Curry
Has this man said one word about the tech oligarchs in his city? The racist ass president?
Fuck off
This nimby idf bozo
He’s talking about Drake
Didn’t this dude lobby against affordable housing in his town?
Yep. A true NIMBY
Why not highlight doing actual community work and making an impact , Jaylen brown does more than curry man lol
Fuck, Steph, honestly. Man is invested out of his mind into Israeli drones. And didn’t he also agitate against public housing? -Former peak fan.
Pop
Ironic considering he uses his voice to silence Palestinians
lmao okay buddy. I guess that only matters when its not about the zionist occupation and ongoing genocide of Palestine and its people.
Some of the “Goats” constantly shoved in our face really love to pat themselves on the back for doing bare minimum with the platforms and access that they have. How can you be a humanitarian while invested in a military intelligence agencies currently committing war crimes and genocide. Make it make sense.
That’s right! That why one of you should run into the pitch during the world cup finals!
Didn’t he invest in izzreali drones?
Yea it’s called Reddit
this thread is genuinely awful lmao. steph isn’t a perfect human by any means but saying shit like, “i know more people who have more with less and they didn’t need to publicize it” when Steph has done a ton of community shit behind the scenes without the need to announce it on his socials/whatever. Couch potatoes/reddit warlords trying to diminish an objectively true statement is so like r/nba though so it isn’t surprising to me.
Remember you have a platform…just not on reddit.
Doesn’t he invest in drones n shit that are used in gaza
But if you aren’t wealthy stay the fuck away from my neighborhood.
