I work with a guy who makes ~$65k a year, and all he talks about and post on twitter is how we need to defend rich people because of ‘trickle down’ and that they don’t deserve the new tax law Washington state is trying to pass to tax millionaires.

I understand it to a point. Pro athletes are probably one of the few rich folks that actually pay a good amount of taxes. They’re ultimately W2 employees paying taxes in how many different states and cities and so it’s a lot more difficult to get around lowering that. They’re closer to a normal person in that regard because we all have limited ability to lower tax liability as W2 workers.

Meanwhile Musk and Bezos and Trump don’t pay fucking any taxes because they’re able to manipulate everything through their businesses and stock holdings and changing compensation packages and methods. Pro athletes basically can’t do that.

There is probably no where in the US where someone’s effective tax bracket, even including city/state taxes, exceeds 50%. He’s either dumb or lying. The top federal bracket is only 37% and since as a CPA, I continually have to explain this, that does NOT mean all their income is taxed at that rate. Some making $1mil probably only has an effective rate of closer to 26-28%. And for those with extreme wealth, they get into all kinds of tax shenanigans that makes their effective rate sometimes even lower.

CJ didn’t really make himself look good when he’s saying a hypothetical 970k 4% goes to agent fees & market fees being 12%. Like 970k of 4% is 38.8k( agent fees) now he’s leftover 931k now subtract that 12% market fee (112k of 931) he’ll still have 819k left. Now let’s assume housing he buys a home for about 500k + giving money to families is 100k … he’ll still have 219k leftover. Now let’s say he puts 100k saved for tax …. He’ll have 119k left. Like again it is costly but 12k leftover he must’ve taken money and placed it in other areas ( maybe an EMF, investing ) or he wanted to live super frugal to his means and though 12k is enough . But again that’s his

He is describing his rookie deal years with Blazers when he was making ~\(2m/year, and his net pay was less than half after federal/state taxes, union dues and mgmt/agent cuts. Although he ended up making \~\)270m or so during his career, hard to know if you are going to make the second contract, or if you are going to wash out of the league.
