Yea it also struck me as a surprising story to hear it happen with the Thunder, an organization that famously prioritizes a more selfless attitude in players. Daigneault’s request was completely reasonable as well, given that Joe had just been waived and missed training camp.

It probably helped Joe that it was a tank year for the Thunder so they played him anyway, and Joe could reasonably look around and think he could get time and was better than or at least as good as some of the other guys the Thunder were playing.

I went to high school with him was part of that Northside team. After seeing in real life how talented he is this story still surprised me. Dude has always been so humble compared to Jaylin who was a total tool. Dude would put in so much work and had a good head on his shoulders. I’m glad this paid off for him though.

D’lo, Fox and Ingram are successful cases. For everyone of those, there are a bunch of Bol Bol’s, Jabari Parkers (even with the injury luck) that are talented enough to stick around but are not willing to do the small things or work the right way to fit in an NBA roster.

While guys like PJ Tucker know what to work on to come back and stick.

No one that says what he said about defense is coachable. Of course he was a hard worker, no one gets to the NBA without working hard, he just didn’t like to work hard at what would make him stick after injuries.

His lack of commitment to the defensive end was notorious even when he hadn’t gotten injured, and was clearer when his offensive role could not offset the negative defensive impact.

Bol Bol also had extreme talent, he just wanted to be a featured scorer instead of working on D and becoming a bench big who could give you buckets without hemorrhaging points on the other end.

Jabari was worse than a liability, because he gave no effort. Most liabilities still try their hardest and are “team defenders”. Jabari is cut from the same cloth that Jamal Crawford was in a position where he needs to be better than JC ever needed to be.

Jabari was also not a great rebounder or pick setter at the four.

Similar archetypes of players who stayed in the league after or are playing currently:

TJ Warren, Rui, kuzma, Mathurin, whitmore, Bey and Tobias Harris (who you cannot convince me is actually a good defender despite “effort”) and the cream of the crop of the archetype: MPJ.

Wings who can put the ball in the hoop and are questionable/non-defenders is an archetype as old as time lol.

All of these guys are around the same stocks, rbs and similar overall defensive impact. Most of those dudes have working knees.

Jabari wasn’t outlandishly bad at defense in comparison to his player archetype; he just had no knees and kinda gave up on his NBA career early.

You can be “that guy” and still get cut. Teams have very little patience for deep bench guys who are struggling to make the league and not willing to do what the team asks. Players who belong in the league get moved from team to team all the time before getting their chance.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun story and the guy clearly had confidence in himself, but this is something that goes the wrong direction in most cases.

if Cade somehow ups his stamina and can play 42 minutes at full speed, Cade + shooters might get it done. the problem i saw with him against us (Cleveland) is that he looked gassed for most of the second half.

I’m not sure how, but if he could somehow do the lebron 42+ mpg at full strength by pacing himself on defense and picking and choosing his moments to go full throttle, it would be lethal.

I think Cade could genuinely average 12 APG next season. He had 10 APG last season with some of the worst shooting the league.

I don’t love the heliocentric approach in general, but now at least we have a roster much better suited for it. I think the people predicting a Pistons fall off are going to be a bit disappointed, especially in the regular season. We’ll see come playoff time

I think Fred VanVleet more or less did the same shit. He could’ve got drafted in 2016 in the 2nd round, but the teams looking to draft him wanted him to spend a year or so in the G-League (then still the D-League). Decided to test his luck by accepting a training camp offer with the Raptors, and the rest is history.

I don’t know what other word would be more accurate. The way Daigneault tells the story, the initial request wasn’t a question. He’s the coach and says to Joe “I want you to do this.” Joe says no, and Daigneault talks about trying to figure out how to convince him to do it.
