A big part about Phee’s statement that gets overlooked is that she’s the VP of the WNBPA and was when she made those comments while they were actively negotiating their CBA. It’s an insane last resort tactic to make that kind of public statement and emphasizes how poorly Cathy was handling those negotiations. She’s the worst commissioner in sports.

Bruh, I just read up on that (I’m not a die hard fan but watch some game highlights and catch the one or the other story here and there) but in what reality does that comissioner live? Clark should be thankful for the WNBA because thats how she got her off court endorsements? What in the? As someone who’s been a WNBA and WCBB fan for basically my entire life, let me be so clear: the players know. That’s why they hate her and are doing this lmao

As a bit of context, the WNBA is a staunchly pro-black and pro-lesbian league that has a rich history of being as much of a social movement as it has been a sports league. Black, lesbian women have been in this league for decades fighting for more visibility, better pay, etc. The issue is that the players want those things, but only on their terms and from people they deem worthy to give it. From the players perspective, the W is getting what it wanted all along but not from the type of person/fans they wanted it from. CC is a white straight woman who is not culturally black, went to a non-target type school, and is not an outspoken advocate for their causes. Not to say that she isn’t in her personal life, but these things add up in a way that really rubs the OG’s and current players the wrong way. Her fandom also brought a lot of attention from fans who are much more politically diverse and critical of operations in a way that the W has not really ever had to deal with before. Think “I can make fun of my brother but if you do that crosses a line”.

All the OG’s/more established players see right now is that CC waltzed into the league and immediately became the face of it without having any of the struggles/hardships that prior generations of players had. CC will never have to go overseas to get extra $$$ to pay bills. CC got teams flying private instead of economy. CC only had to deal with low end contracts on the prior media deal one year before max contracts and the list goes on. These girls are furious that someone they believe fits their definition of what the W represents isn’t the face of the league. It’s why so many of them rally behind Paige Bueckers.

It’s weird because tickets to see the Fire in Portland cost as much or more as seeing the Blazers. Would love to take my kiddo, but I’d rather pay \(30 for thorns tix and see a game than pay \)20 for nosebleeds behind a pole or $30 for nosebleeds with a view of ants playing basketball. Some of the reg season tix in the ¹⁰⁰⁄₂₀₀ levels are going for as much as the playoff tix for the blazers. Hopefully they estimated demand well because I am not filling those seats for that price.

I went to my first WNBA game this year in Portland and the Fire experience was so much more fun than the Blazers….and I was a Blazers season ticket holder for 17 years. Crowd was much more relaxed and there to have fun. No screaming at the refs, no guy behind me constantly complaining about every move made in the game, etc. The game seems more pure and not just three point attempt after three point attempt. Definitely gonna go to more!!
