He also only played 58 games the year before last too. Let’s see him play more than 65 games then we’ll talk about the playoffs.

And I say this as respectfully to the Lakers fanbase as possible but the roster still needs work when you consider what walked out the door this summer with no asset or player return.

55% is fine. That would have been an above average points per possession outcome league-wide every season in NBA history prior to 2020.

Also how would this ruin our defense when they’re going to be hacking Kessler on the offensive end? Slowing the game down reduces the chances of us being beaten in transition which is great with Luka and AR on the perimeter.

I bet the Lakers would welcome a hack a Kessler. That’s more than 1 point per possession and allows them to set their defense on made second free throws. Hack a whoever isnt really that effective, especially since it often allows a guy to find his free throws rhythm and shoot above their career percentages.

55% really isn’t bad enough for teams to commonly use that strategy. Maybe in a spot here and there, but not often. Plus, if Kessler even raises his average slightly to 60%, it becomes a bad play to send him to the line and that is not an unreasonable improvement by any means.

You usually see the back-a-whoever strategy on guys who shoot below 50% like Mitch, Drummond, Deandre Jordan, Ben Wallace.

The funny thing is, Shaq’s career percentage of 52% isn’t nearly as horrific as some of those other guys; it was generally just a better idea to send him to the line of purpose versus have him punish teams down low where he shot in the high 50’s most of his career. That’s not the case with these other guys as none of them are average let alone elite offensive scorers.

Dudes never even played a playoff game. For all we know, he could be played off the court round one. Lakers had to do what they had to do, but Kessler is highly volatile.

That’s just a little below league average TS%, but then you can factor in removing the possibility of a turnover and it likely isn’t a smart play.

something else people don’t talk about is his health. 64, 58 and 5 is is games played last 3 seasons. considering Luka never plays 65+ and reaves is starting to do the same, that’s a lot of games missed.
