[Lorenzi] Caleb Wilson on what mechanical work he is doing “2500 shots a day for 2 ½ months”
Most impressive part of this is dude went to class. Respect.
Bro is going to beat the Jaylen Brown allegations
To be fair almost every rookie beats those allegations. It takes some time to know a player and the odd things about them.
Redditors refuse to believe that some athletes actually do value education lmao
He seems like a smart and funny and nice dude and I wish I was friends with him.
I bet he wears some of the freshest clothes and hangs out with the hottest dudes.
Fuck me, right??
He might if you’re lucky.
He was gay, Caleb Wilson?
He’s got that joie de vivre and just seems to be enjoying life more than the vast majority of folks.
Seriously? He cracked half a smile and gave a thorough answer. Last time that happened, kawhi got diagnosed as autistic by the arm chair psychologists.
I’m not basing what I said off one interview answer.
AFAIK Caleb Wilson had a high GPA throughout his high school career so I do think he’s one of the few highly drafted picks who actually did come to play a little school
Yeah I genuinely appreciate him saying that. All too rare these days.
At UNC no less
I would see equally impressive is he is thoughtful and articulate. I wish him the best.
For real lol, had a few hockey players in my class back in the day (they still play in my countrys national league) and it was like 20% chance for them to show up in class on any given day. And even then they maybe came to like 1 or 2 and then dipped for the rest of the day (and during classes they just were focused on everything else but class, also very arrogant and like ur typical stereotypical jocks)
So thats my limited experience of athletes in school, respect to those that actually try to study a bit even when they know they most likely wont need any of it (because they are already scouted to be talents at that point so their life trajectory is pretty much set already)
I had a basketball player in one of my classes (small liberal arts school, was like bottom barrel D3) and we were going around the room introducing ourselves and telling our major and he goes “whatever my coach picked” haha
Was thinking that too. Dude is very mature. Loved his answers.
reminds me of that time UNC got caught with an entire fake department for football players to take “Swahili”
That’s what I always say when people talk About how valuable going to college is for players. No it’s not. Playing basketball full time is much more so than doing it part time.
The biggest knock on this guy was his shooting and he hit 7 threes his first game. If that’s even somewhat consistent, I don’t even know what his ceiling is
The ultimate top outcome, which is always unlikely, is 2030s Kevin Garnett
He doesn’t have the same body as Garnett. Garnett was 7’ with a 7’5” Wingspan. Wilson is 6’10” with a 7’0” wingspan.
I definitely see Garnett in his game, but he’s some sort of freaky hybrid.
I think a lot of people are going to struggle find him a modern comp.
Eventually he’ll be so great that he’s just Caleb Wilson.
A different animal and the same beast.
What does that mean?
I think it means he’s into beastiality
“What the fuck does that mean Kobe Bryant”
You’re welcome
Unreal reference
A UNC fan said he’s a faster, more athletic ‘Sheed with better handles and worse post-moves
Isn’t that what most typical PF are these days. Better handles, more athletic, worse post moves?
Outside of a few PF’s seems like post moves are rare outside of the basics.
Yeah you’re right. But none of them are as reminiscent of ‘Sheed
*Actually there were athletic 4’s back then as well. Rodman, KG, Kemp and Webber just to name a few. I think the part reason for the change was the shift to the 3pt line and some natural small ball as a result
We Will Be There
I think 2030s KG’s knees are going to be in tough shape
A few other things by that point
I’m 2030’s Kevin Garnett here to talk to you about blue chew…
I don’t understand where people get this comparison. KG was taller and longer.
There only one big ticket
Beleive dat!
he’s that good of a defender??
Anything is possible!!
I remember watching aaron gordon hit 5 3s in a summer league game and thinking this dude gonna be in the hall of fame. i’m sure he’ll be good but it’s one game
Simillar to Zion. In his first nba game he went 4⁄4 from three but has only hit 33 total threes (including that game) in his 7 year (albeit injury plagued) career
Only 33 3s? Good lord. I had no idea.
Coaching would be a major factor there, I don’t think anyone’s ever asked Zion to take more threes.
To be fair Zion was shooting open threes that game
Caleb in his summer league was taking stepbacks and contested threes and the scary part is how natural they looked
Zion could hit 33 buffets a night.
haha zion fat
Hell, if all he can do is be an above average defender, score on lobs, and shoot 40% from 3 he will be a valuable 4 position player getting 30m+ a year.
Saying that like that’s a pretty easy outcome.
A guy who shot 25% on 1 attempt in college being a 40% 3 point shooter is not a common outcome at all.
I think it’s more likely he becomes an all star based on an inside the arc game than it is he becomes an elite 3 point shooting role player
He and Peterson were the most polished rookies. The difference is that Wilson is 6’9.
He and Peterson were the most polished rookies.
Uh…Cam Boozer? AJ?
Also, Wilson is universally seen as a raw prospect.
People just say anything. Boozer is the definition of polished.
I am a fan of Wilson’s, and Boozer looks like a 10 year vet. Reliable, polished.
But Caleb Wilson looks like a superstar.
You can be more raw and a better prospect or player, absolutely.
Wilson being universally seen as raw is so freaking silly. (Even though I think a lot of people feel that way) He has a really nice mid post turnaround over each shoulder. He has shown some really good vision passing both over the top and spraying to shooters. He is really good at baiting guys to take shots that he can block. He routinely picks guards dribbles. He needs to clean up his dribble a little and didn’t show too much from three in college. The athleticism and drive is clearly bezerk, but he’s not without some level of refinement already.
I wonder if that could mean that they think he has a high ceiling? That he seems to pass the eye test that he can polish it to be amazing in the league. I don’t know, didn’t get to see college ball. But excited to see the upcoming season
I’m not saying he sucked, but he was definitely raw. He had a loose handle, the form on his shot was really inconsistent (hence him shooting so many shots to get his form down), and his defensive rotations and awareness were pretty poor at times.
(Don’t interpret this as him being a bad prospect. He was an incredible prospect due to his athleticism, flashes, character, and work ethic)
And more athletic than peterson (or anybody else in the draft, except for maybe AJ).
His form looked pretty good to me.
his shooting wasnt even bad at unc, he just didnt do it that much
Hours of tape doesn’t get erased because of one summer league game.
If his biggest knock going into the draft was his shooting then we should have no reason to believe that it’s even somewhat consistent after a summer league debut.
He might be a dawg he getting the eye color down pack like MJ
forreal but down pat fyi
He was smokin on that loud pat
It’s already hitting the point where I’m worried about his sanity lol
He seems like he takes losses and failure pretty hard and while putting in a ton of work does pay off it can also drain you mentally if you have high expectations for yourself and you aren’t hitting them as quickly as you want
I have no doubt he’s going to work harder than anybody else but for his sake I hope he can find ways to manage that and also have mental clarity and a good balance
Also sleep is probably the most important factor in mental and physical performance.
The whole “sleep 4 hours in order to work out/study more” is just bs that will make you worse at whatever youre trying to do
The only reason NBA guys can say they hit the gym at 4am and shit like that is because they dont need to wake up in the morning lol Being an NBA player is essentially the same as working evening/early night shifts.
I’ve never thought of it that way being a evening/early night shift lmao
I wonder if any of them hate the waiting around all day to “start work” because I sure as hell did when I’ve worked those shifts
Its like the main reason they hang out in clubs and shit. Nothing else is open after games lmao
yeah if their day ended at 2pm they’d all be hitting libraries and coffee shops im sure
Road life is notoriously boring for players in the league
Plenty have talked about waking up and doing a light shootaround or walkthrough around 10 AM and then not getting to the arena till like 5:30 and just sitting in your hotel room for hours waiting
Lol. What a bizarre complaint. That’s 100% their choice to sit around and do nothing. They are filthy rich and could easily find activities or hobbies to fill their time.
Probably need to get some level of rest though. I doubt they’re trying to do too much before a game.
Kinda. If you’re at all known people are gonna recognize you in public which makes it harder to do (or enjoy) a lot of hobbies. Add in the fact that half the time you have to find a place to do [insert hobby] in whatever city you’re traveling to and it starts to make more sense that a lot of these dudes just sit in their hotel rooms and play video games.
Not to say they don’t have other options, but a lot of people who travel for work struggle with this issue.
I bet those 12 PM weekend games feel great tbh
What’s crazy is by all accounts MJ basically never slept.
Some people think he must be one of those people who only need half as much sleep as a normal human (there’s a quirk (which is thought to possibly be genetic) where a small portion of the population only needs half as much sleep)
I wonder if he just took a lot of naps. Theres a lot of people claiming to sleep very few hours that dont mention the fact that they sleep throughout the day.
Although with Jordan he might just be built different
Well there’s no argument that he isn’t built different
The claims don’t come from him…. it’s from guys who knew him (BJ Armstrong, etc)
It’s come up in a bunch of interviews.
I think it was in the Dream Team doc too. I feel like from David Robinson but I might be wrong it’s been a few years.
He def slept. Where did you hear this? I think you may be referring to specific times like when he was out late gambling in Atlantic City during the playoffs and basically dominated on low sleep (and possibly hungover)
I think those 4am sessions are actually just the dude sleeping different hours. Like practice from 4-12, sleep a few hours like 12-4 or 5, wake up work out again, go to sleep at midnight until 4. As long as you get 2 hours of consecutive sleep, for a total of 8 hours in a 24 hour period, technically I think that’s enough sleep
2-2.5k is getting to the point of just too many tbh. JJ redick famously shot only 342 a day during the offseason. The key is going game speed during each one
JJ was one of the greatest shooters in college basketball history. By the time he was a vet in the league all he needed was maintenance in the offseason
saw a comment that did the maths and it is a shot every 6 seconds for a tad over 4 hours straight
that is literally absurd
I’m guessing this is actually split into 2-3 sessions every day probably morning and evening.
Is it? As he said he didn’t have a job or class. He didn’t have anything else to do. If you had 8 hours free in your day and could work on a skill that could earn you literally hundreds of millions of dollars, is 4 hours of practice all that hard? It’s way less than a lot of guys who play video games on Twitch for a fraction of a fraction of his income.
JJ could naturally shoot from the beginning. He never had to try and build something out of nothing.
the baseline has to be built, and for someone like jj its probably easier to build as he has a lower center of gravity and a wingspan that is less awkward. 6 3 vs 7ft.
Sure, but JJ came into the league an elite shooter. He’d been taking thousands of shots a year for the last 15 years
”The key is going game speed during each one.”
That’s always been a problem of mine with these guys knocking down every shot during practice, can’t they get someone to run at you, attempting to close out? Scramble a bit to get free before the pass? Simulate game situations.
Please dont think I’m being a dick here. But I genuinely don’t know what this means.
His “eye color down pack like MJ”
I am genuinely confused.
guessing they think it’s “down pack” instead of down pat
Mike’s eyes didn’t turn red until after he retired. It’s the blood of all the opponents he killed
Down pack 😂
Was just about to post this man. This is insane. Do you think other rookies are doing this? He said he’s been doing this for last 2 1⁄2 months. If so, I can explain how great his shot looked in the first game. Hope he keeps this up.
There has got to be diminishing returns especially as you lose focus. But with trainers and rebounders all investing in you yeah, you can get a ton of shots up and improve very quickly.
You also don’t need to do it straight.
Break it up into multiple shooting sessions, do some when you’re tired, etc
Can I shoot it if I’m gay?
double exp month is over, sorry bud
I spit out my coffee reading this.
Ask A. C. Green
Some people make you wait longer…
You have to be trustworthy, and if you’re gay and you’re not admitting that you are, then you are not trustworthy.
It does seem an awful lot to do daily
Maybe but as an occupational therapist, the number one most important part of motor learning and neuroplasticity is high repetition
Definitely diminishing returns. 500 game speed shots is better than 2000 half hearted ones. JJ redick did only 342 during the offseason. There really is no reason to put up that many shots but the work ethic is a good sign
Counter point: Steph.
I’m seeing that Steph supposedly takes 500 game speed shots per day.
Wilson might be taking more shots that are not game speed if he’s trying to focus on getting his form perfect though.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe Steph shoots until he makes 500 per day.
So 510 shots?
Yeah I agree. Just jacking up shots only gets you so far. What’s tough about shooting isn’t hitting open stand-still shots, but taking off the dribble shots at game speed for example.
Maybe he is doing that, but then 2.5k shots sounds like a crazy amount.
Only way i can see it is if he counts literally any type of shot. Free throws, catch and shoot, pull ups, floaters, movement, off pindowns etc. Be a huge waste of time to just stand and shoot 2500 threes a day, he would have no time to work on literally any other part of his game or lift weights and have time to recover
I’m sure he will dial it back once the season starts. He’s got a hell of a Headstart though lol. Does anyone recall how many shots Kobe shot per day during off-season?
Muscle memory…
JJ Redick said he would shoot like 350ish shots a day in his shooting workout in the offseason. The number seems insane.
Reddick also had a high baseline in his shot
Reps matter more when working on a skill
Are you sure it wasn’t 350 makes?
I was thinking that but even then JJ probably shoots 70%+ in an empty gym
You underestimate how good NBA players are at shooting. Minimum he’s making 90% of open shots in an open shot practicing during his NBA career.
lol. Way more than 70%
Most stars are doing extensive workouts most of the year. Rookies that are great probably are doing that too. At least 20-30%
Based on how good peterson and dybansta look as well Id say they are all pretty locked in
10 weeks
After he injured his wrist too
2,500 shots a day for 2.5 months (we will say 75 days for ease) is 187,500 shots
How many do you think he made?
He only counted the makes
[deleted]
That’s just a manual labour 9-5
I assume being in an elite unit meant you had a pretty damn high chance of getting shot at though?
Dude is following the Larry Bird training method.
Avoid driveways in the winter then.
Winter? I thought he was re-paving it
It’s close to the Kobe method. Kobe would famously make 1000 a day, which ended up being around 2000-2500 shots attempted. I feel like I hear similar stories from all the great shooters with their work ethic.
kobe’s not missing more than 50% of his shots in an empty gym…
An end of the bench NBA player isnt shooting 40-50% in practice, let alone someone of Kobe’s ability. 60% minimum I would say on the low end, he wouldnt be taking more than 1700 shots to make 1000.
15 some shit like, 10 million or something like that, 5 million something like that?
Some big school in Jacksonville
Just to grind from rap
Had to go to school for this decade
I turnt it down
he was just so younger like
That’s rookie numbers. Mitchell Robinson is shooting 5k a day minimum
Well he’s a rookie, so that’s fine
Those poor rims are oval shaped now
Can’t teach this. He will be great I’ve been saying it for months
He will be great I’ve been saying it for months
He’s been a consensus top 4 pick in an amazing draft for longer than that and everyone agrees he has incredible upside, so not the wildest prediction…. Lol
As a UNC alum I’ve been following for longer
Eh “great” is by no means immediately expected from a top 4 pick even when it’s in a class as good as this one.
Saying “he will be great” is bold enough
5 beats a day for 3 summers
I deserve to do these numbers
thats a different world like cree summers
Need that Ye and Caleb linkup for Chi
it’s probably across two or three sessions
dude took, “5 beats a day for 3 summers” too literally. Even Ye admitted that was just a fictional character/exaggeration.
He’s like the opposite of P-Will in every way and that makes me so happy I could cry.
lil bro got us 🙏🏽
He sounds like OG
my favorite player in the draft , im a heels fan but he is crazy good already
If you shoot 8 hours non stop, that’s one shot every 12 seconds. It is insane!
If you have a couple of people helping you then you should be able to get up a shot in about half that time. I would imagine he’s doing a couple of very efficient 2-3 hour sessions daily for most of that volume.
I imagine he does three 3 hour sessions.
When I was playing ball during my summers I would be at the court for over 8 hours for some days and I was just a kid who loved to play.
You’re telling me with millions riding on your career you wouldn’t do that every day?
I don’t think they were telling you that at all.
Then he would be only working on shooting? Nothing else?
God damn did the Bulls finally get a real one, this guy putting work in well AJ be practicing throwing his head back in the ballet mirror 🪞
As a Heels fan, I absolutely have always loved this kids attitude. He always gave everything when he played. I’m excited to see what happens
This kid is an absolute psychopath. He’s going to be great.
Getting OG interview vibes
He’s my fav pick of the draft. Dude is a competitive beast.
I already love this kid
I’m getting old, this NBA player looks so young
Not disagreeing with you (that you’re getting old) but Caleb specifically had a really young face. I was watching the Bulls v. Grizzlies game and Boozer looks like a grizzled vet in comparison and he’s somehow younger than Wilson.
2500 just sounds insane tbh like at some point i feel like it would become an overkill
And that’s why you aren’t a good shooter
At least he still has his arms to shoot with
How many 3s does Steph shoot in his normal routine?
2499, Caleb Wilson clears
We deserve this
Chicago might have their guy finally, Id be happy for en.
His jumper looked particularly silky
This is it. This is how talented people Become great. This is the basketball equivalent of the Beatles playing 20 hour sets in Hamburg.
I’ve been following Caleb for years as a UNC fan. He’s such a special player. 99th percentile athleticism yes, but an incredibly nice and thoughtful kid who is an absolute demon competitor. The 2500 shots thing is the least surprising revelation of all time—mentally, he’s one of one. And actually, on that subject, the draft guides were all off base on him—they talked about him like he was just raw physical talent, but he already had a pretty awesome bag at UNC and was a very good passer.
I hope Chicago understands how lucky they got in this draft, he’s going to be the best player out of this crop, and it’s not going to be close, like multi-all NBA franchise cornerstone and culture setter
For those curious, that is about 90 min of shooting if shooting a shot every two seconds. Idk I would guess he is exaggerating but possible.
Bruh how the hell would he be getting a shot off every two seconds?
Even with someone passing the ball as soon as he is ready, the catch, sat up, release, and then pass is at leastttt 5ish seconds.
Ignore that comment. It’s more like three 4 hour gym sessions a day. Which you can absolutely get that many shots off easily.
3 beats a day for 2 summers…. Or something like that.
I love this dude. I hope he balls out.
I don’t know how to explain it but this guy has an aura that I haven’t felt in a while, probably since young Bron. Some MC aura type shi, idk
I dig it, I’m going to watch Chicago just for this dude
This seems way too excessive imo. At some point you have to experience diminishing returns. In one of Kobe’s last interviews he talked about practicing shots and how his routine would change depending on the team he was about to play coz they guarded him differently. 2,500 is wild!
That is a ridiculous number of shots. I pray that his form is perfect because he could be doing empty work
His form isn’t perfect but it’s solid. Shots always looked best when he had to shoot under pressure and didn’t have time to think about it.
back in my prime I did about 50
Excellent. Seems like he is going to go far.
Sakuragi workout
Can’t believe someone else had that thought
That’s a lot of alcohol
