Will the penalties for the Clippers be as harsh as the Timberwolves were in 2000?
Nearly 26 years ago, the NBA Commissioner David Stern (RIP) laid the hammer down on the Minnesota Timberwolves for their version of circumventing the NBA salary cap with former player, Joe Smith.
Here were the penalties:
• The team was stripped of five 1ST-round draft picks (two were later returned).
• The franchise was fined a then-league record of $3.5 million.
• Joe Smith’s contract was voided entirely, and he was stripped of the very Bird rights the team was attempting to circumvent.
• Owner Glen Taylor was suspended for 1 year, and General Manager Kevin McHale was forced to take a leave of absence.
If the Clippers are found guilty for the Aspiration-Kawhi deal, will Adam Silver be as firm as Stern?
