The ease with which circlejerks explode online is honestly scary af. You see it across all kinds of societal discourse on all online platforms, with many recent illustrative examples on this NBA subreddit alone (ex: the SGA/Thunder hate train, Shams hate train, former Embiid hate train, etc.).

The cross-pollination between human nature (groupthink/tribalism) and the nature of social media (echo chambers) creates these beasts. And unfortunately, a lot of people aren’t self-aware enough to realize they’ve been sucked into them.

I think this gets the causation wrong. The reason people are nicer to Tyler Herro in person is because everyone is nicer to others to their face. If I ran into Tyler Herro at a restaurant, I wouldn’t tell him about how I don’t rate him all that highly as a player. That’s true of basically any public figure. There are hundreds of different subs to designed to criticize random anonymous nobodies. That isn’t people being meaner online. They’re critical in real life to, just not to their face. This feels painfully obvious.

I don’t know. In real life you get punched by Bam. I think real life Bam has been a more negative encounter in real life than online Bam.

That’s because people are louder when they’re upset. When people feel attacked, cornered, or wronged, they either want to voice their opinion or project how they feel by expressing themselves to others. And it’s easier to voice frustration or hate online rather than in person. There are also people on the internet that have shitty lives, have mental issues, are in prison, are dealing with death, debt, they live in dangerous areas, are neglected by the people around them, etc. There are a lot different ways hundreds of millions of people experience their lives. A couple people that are loud online don’t represent hundreds of millions or even the 10-15 people upvoting or downvoting your comments.

One of the best parts about this summer has been his downfall, I’ve just never liked him as a player and I resent we didn’t move him and kept catering the team more around him. Ironically Herro is an example of that choosing to say things to a complete random internet user without bothering to use a pseudonyms over saying it to Bam’s face when they were teammates. Take away the internet and Herro would not had the opportunity to succumb to the internet.

I think some parts can be but Reddit is notoriously disconnected from real life. When you see the majority Reddit opinions on media, celebrities, news or politics you eventually start to realise more often than not it doesn’t correspond to reality.
