That actually wasnt the deal with Lopez. They signed Lopez using the biennial exception in 2018 and then re-signed him in 2019 using cap space the following year because they did not have bird rights.

Lopez’s value was at an all time low in 2018 because the Lakers did not know how to use him. The biennial exemption + a starting spot was market rate for him.

Portis’s deal in 2021 was a handshake deal so the Bucks could use bird rights to give him a better deal in 2022.
