Teams should be able to keep their own players and bypass any “hard” caps or aprons to do so.

They should name this rule after a famous player who stayed with the same team his whole career. Say, Larry Bird?

If you have a salary cap system, a player taking a discount is pretty much always going to be a benefit to team-building.

Then don’t hand out max contracts so willingly. What has been up with this discourse on the CBA this week lol. It’s a contract. Your union agreed to it!!

Taking less money to stack your team has always been an option.

You shouldn’t be able to pay like 3-4 maxes to keep guys together.

I’ve always believed in the two star philosophy. You can have two max players on your team. I think that should 100 be allowed and I’m sure it is. But after that everyone else should be treated as a role player.

It’s kind of hilarious to describe a player having to accept \(50m now instead of \)60m a year from now as a burden to carry.

Is it a burden or just the rules to stay under a salary cap to create an equality amongst all teams.

This is actually so greedy from players. You aren’t the only sporting league in the world with a salary cap, but also they can get paid slightly over since there’s aprons.

There’s actual sports out there with just a cap ceiling and you must be paid in that, you either stay take less to build a team for winning or you take a bag and go to a smaller or lesser team

Parity is better.

Under the previous three CBAs, the biggest money players often broke their own teams up by fucking off to bigger markets.

The purpose of increasing parity via the CBA was/is to claw back the huge opportunity cost that the NBA paid for 20+ years under previous CBAs, which disproportionately funneled high end talent to just a few teams. Casuals in left out markets had no incentive to spend their attention nor money on the NBA, and that’s a problem.

The changes were obviously going to cause some short-term & medium-term austerity. Especially for teams & players who weren’t prepared for the new incentive structure. But give it time and everybody - players inclusive - will be making more money. The pie still needs more time to bake. Should be a lot closer after another couple years of dominos falling & the NBA reworking local + regional media deals for all the teams on toxic deals.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. They already killed free agency so teams basically get 11 years of control or a trade haul anytime they draft a star. Now they want to make it even easier to keep talent besides the fact that other teams can’t offer max contracts to your players? Fuck that

Well if they weren’t overpaying Fox so much it wouldn’t be a problem. The issue is good players aren’t on reasonable contracts anymore

So instead of the stars taking pay cuts he want guys 3-10 on the roster to take pay cuts? Because that’s who gets paid when the stars take the pay cut.

The last few CBAs have been brutal for the PA. They used to get the majority of revenue at around 57% and now they are close to an even split now. And then they agreed to this second apron which is killing the middle class and there were so many more non guaranteed years added this FA. Good luck getting the toothpaste back in the tube though. 

It should be a hard cap number at this point. If Brooklyn wants to offer half of their cap, then so be it.

So back to an era of dynasties and where 75% of the teens are irrelevant and just feeder teams to the major markets.

Max contracts shouldn’t just be “a fun max player” or given to a “Chet is close” Chet had as much of a collapse in the finals as Fox, Jdub probably gets a pass because of injuries right now but his contract looks horrible if he’s not even 80% of what he was.

Max contracts should be for top 5 or so players in the league end of. We have this bs of jalens duren and Johnson now eligible for max extensions.

OKC have about 75% of their cap in 3 players this next season and then it jumps to 85% the season after.

You can’t build teams around that, players are punishing their own teams and teams are punishing themselves caving to it.

Max contracts aren’t just things to pass around because a player has shown they can be a good player at time.

I’ll die on this hill: the old CBA was fine. The apron was a correction to a problem that will never manifest again (the cap jump)

If you have good players they are going to want more money. If you have a real salary cap you are never going to be able to keep a team of good players together. Not sure why people lament this so much. It just means talent gets more dispersed and more teams have good players.

The NFL has a hard cap, star players that make 20% of the cap, dynasties and is wildly better product than the NBA where it’s reasonable to be a contender in 2-3 years. FOs just need to recalibrate how they build rosters so they’re more balanced than top heavy.

So we want to give a competitive advantage for teams that have draft luck? They just get to have dollars that don’t count on the books? How about teams that trade and sign players? Will they also get to have cap relief?

Lets say maximum cap hold for player u drafted is 35% and they remove 1% per year of them being in the team.

It still would benefit the whole team if he were to take a discount.

Not sure why no NBA player do what Tom Brady did, leave money on the table to create legacy.

I propose a simple fix, in exchange for changing up the bird rights applying only to the team that drafted a player or traded for while still on their rookie contract contract; the elimination of the second apron.

Up the players revenue percentage to sixty, then a hard cap, no aprons. We know what the owners would say, what about the players?

So when the other 11 guys on the team have to accept lower pay to stay with the team or go to a better team, that’s ok. But when the richest player on the team has to do it, it’s a problem? Ok, got it.

if your starting five all decided to take a 5% cap paycut the team could fit a whole extra 30% cap player who took a 5% paycut.

What stars have “carried a burden”? Owners can pay the tax. Players that take less make a choice.

Boston didn’t trade Jaylen because of cap management. They traded him because he’s not that good. This wouldn’t change if part of his salary was protected

But - if it means overall that owners pay more to players rather than each other through tax sharing, that’s good.

Small market teams clinging onto parity

2nd apron and all this cap discourse is just cover for stingy owners who need an excuse to not invest in their teams and their fans. I’m sure they’re loving it that the conversation has settled on what players deserve and how much.

Take away the penalty taxes and make it easier for owners to spend. Even under the apron, it’ll very quickly become clear which owners want to win and which owners just want to skate.
