I’ll tell you right now I hope this trade works out because I am fucking EAGER to see what Scottie Barnes (after last season) and Kawhi look like together out there. To me, that’s a potentially very fucking dangerous duo! Absolutely excited beyond belief to see it
Raptors already gave the Cavs fits defensively in the 1st round and were 5th in defense in the regular season (i think) with Brandon Ingram instead of Kawhi.

Kawhi’s defense has actually been statistically not very good for a couple of seasons now. But a big reason for that is that he’s always been the main wing defender on his team (and also, conserving energy for offense).
I think that with Toronto’s roster, Kawhi has the opportunity to be the defender of the opponents second best player, rather than saddled every night with the task of guarding their outright best, and that will result in his defensive stats massively improving without hurting his offensive production.
He’s just a player that doesn’t go 100% all of the time. When it’s needed he’ll pick it up. Even in 2019 it was like that. He’s just so that he has multiple gears. In 2019 after losing 2 games to the bucks the coach were meeting with the players to see what to do. Man said I’m guarding Giannis, that’s the adjustment and left the room. Obviously we know what happened there
And to piggyback off of what you are saying, I just think having the presence of a guy like Kawhi (who can still be elite offensively) takes a big load off of Scottie in theory right? Watching Scottie in the Cavs series it really made me wonder if he just had another player or two to help him because he was doing literally everything and he was doing it well but he couldn’t/can’t sustain that
In theory. Scottie Barnes is, in theory, the perfect second option for a championship team. But it may be that ‘doing everything’ playstyle is what’s natural to him, and in a way it does simplify things for him.
With a second star it complicates decision making - now, any time Scottie takes a shot the opportunity cost is Kawhi’s shot. Nor can Scottie assume that he’s the primary help defender, or assume that he’ll be on the opponents best wing. The team is better but the roles are murkier.
With much more to think about and be aware of, uncharacteristic errors can rear their head. This is especially relevant because neither are great playmakers - even optimistically, I can’t see how Barnes would make Kawhi better offensively and vice Versa. Hope it works out
Scottie not a great playmaker? Do you actually watch the raptors lol? His play making has been his best offensive tool since college, hes literally the best playmaker on the team. His passing and vision is phenomenal.

Even more than kawhi having to guard the 2nd option. In certain raptors lineup kawhi could be guarding the 5th option. When the raps use the shead, Walter, kawhi, scottie and cmb lineup thats 5 plus defenders where kawhi can be placed on the weakest offensive player and really conserve energy. With BI and gradey gone thise team doesnt really have any negative defenders. IQ is a really good help defender and rj will have lapses but overall last year he showed real growth and that he can be a helpful piece in a top defense.
