AJ Dybantsa is going to be one of the most hated players in the NBA
head snapping back so fast he gets CTE
“Collapsed lung” was always seen as a joke injury in 2k, then it happened to McCollum and Cunningham irl
Maybe 2k should add a flopping induced neck injury to the game before it actually happens.
they have a lot of joke injuries in 2k for sure
i’m not sure Collapsed Lung was ever expected to be one of them though lmfao
Last injury I got on 2K I had 32 in the half with j crossover and he blew a hip. Devastating.
After D Rose’s 50 point game my friend wanted to play me as the Timberwolves and go off with him and he tore his ACL on maybe the second play of the game. We were in tears we were laughing so hard
I injured shareef Abdul Raheem off a crossover once
You might be on to something. If they introduced a flopping mechanic with attributes like 99 (SGA). I’m sure players would try and keep their flop score as low as possible.
Wow the head snap is so fluid and natural, it’s obvious that he has put in a lot of practice (sincerely, not being sarcastic)
He’s gonna be so much fun to watch, most guys learn flopping in the NBA but he’s already a pro.
Im pretty sure i saw a clip of him basically saying he deliberately studies NBA games to enhance his flopping ability awhile back.
I think it was when he was mic’d up for a game iirc
His head snap back metrics were off the charts at the combine.
I actually don’t think it’s crazy you could get a pretty bad neck sprain from this. It’s basically voluntary whiplash. This is crazy he’s doing this so hard already as a rookie lmao.
Doing this so hard as a rookie in summer league
its probably so ingrained its involuntary lol
Damn they practicing early in their career now
It starts in AAU at this point.
It’s part of the current generation foundation at this point lol
Now is the time to discuss this and push for the league to change before the regular season starts.
But how do you prevent this? Players realize that exaggerating contact is effective. So there is only incentive to do it.
Only way to prevent it is by not rewarding it with foul calls. If selling calls gets whistles, guys are gonna do it. You’d be silly not to
That’s definitely one step. But refs are humans. They’ll get fooled sometimes on court, it’s a hard fuckin job.
There needs to be suspensions for it after the game. Like, great job you got a couple extra free throws, now you don’t play for 5 games. It’ll stop real fucking quick.
Suspension right away would never be approved, but I’ve been saying for a while:
Actually review all possible flops post-game (instead of looking at 3 totally random ones per season)
Give a retro tech for each one, with no limit per game (ie you can get 3 techs for last game if you had 3 bad flops)
This wouldn’t punish the player in the specific game for flopping, but you’d get fined per flop with escalating fines and it would add to your season tech counter where it leads to suspensions after X amount
I think that would be reasonable and realistic, and longer term should pay off. But only if NBA took it seriously and didn’t selectively enforce. So it’ll never happen
What you’re saying makes sense but I think that the NBA needs to start with the refs. They need to have behind the doors discussions with the refs first and let them know they will begin disciplining refs who routinely call a foul when the player flopped. The NBA doesn’t want to fine players for flopping after the game if it was called a foul in the game. People would lose their shit if that started happening. The NBA wants to give the appearance of a “pure” product and punishing a player for flopping on a call that was rewarded FTs in the game is a can of worms they don’t wanna open.
That’s why they need to start with talking to the refs quietly. Let them know “Hey, you keep calling fouls on a blatant flop. We have recorded ____ clear flops. If you average at least ____ missed flop calls over the next month then (idk what, insert some disciplinary measure here).”
Once the refs are doing a better job then they should begin figuring out ways to discipline players. Idk the best way to go about it but the NBA can figure out a sensible way. My worry is that if they don’t tackle the issue cautiously then we’ll have the pendulum swing the other way and refs will just call way less fouls and it’ll lead to the 80s NBA where they let em get a bit too rough.
There’s definitely a middle ground the NBA needs to get to because we all know flopping has always been an issue in the NBA we also all know it’s gotten way worse over the last decade. It seems to me like the problem started ballooning with Harden. They allowed the traveling step back 3 too often and it led us down this road of “our #1 priority is to exploit the refs” across the league. AJ was 10 when Harden had his MVP season so he’s been learning since at least then how to play the system. It’ll get worse as more players are developing with foul baiting from their first games.
But the solution requires the NBA and the refs coming to an agreement and I do not believe that will happen for a few years. The flopping is gonna get a lot worse before it finally gets better.
Yep if you don’t wanna play the game and would rather shoot fts all day enjoy the nice vacation.
I love the quote, “Show me the incentive and I’ll show you the outcome.”
One of the most true statements of all time in all walks of life and all situations.
They need to call the games like FIBA international games. Those refs don’t call that bullshit. And I think they even call travels!
They do. They call the actual rules (or at least a much closer approximation). It’s why the score is more reasonable.
Dang, I didn’t realize Harden had a generational impact on basketball too. I thought it was just Steph and the three‑pointers.
Jokes aside the Harden stepback has actually been quite impactful.
There’s clips of kids doing it in summer league. Like 11 year old kids.
AYYY AYYYYY U
Yeah if this is where the NBA is heading I’m gonna be getting off the bus. Fuck this shit.
Already mostly off the bus. Only watch playoffs now.
And you browse r/nba during the depths of the offseason. Sure, you’re totally off the bus.
That is kinda hilarious but tbh Iam like that too. Read r/nba almost everyday but cannot get myself watching the actual games anymore.
I love how many of you are admitting you don’t watch games. The amount of takes in r/NBA that make it clear people don’t watch basketball is crazy, but no one actually admits it lol
I’m subscribed to r/soccer and only check it out during the World Cup and champions league. You can be checked out and still see posts on your main page
I just thought it was funny someone is declaring in a post like this to barely follow the sport
You can follow any pro sport with a newspaper alone if that’s your thing. Maintaining a watchable and entertaining product for people who want to pay to see it is a completely different story…..
Right just because I don’t want to watch the regular season games doesn’t mean I can’t follow the sport. There’s still drama and intrigue.
Writing this as if r/nba hasn’t been the nexus of casuals who don’t watch NBA games at all since at least 2017
Reddit, more than any other site, encourages casuals to overwhelm any discussion. Most actual forums have more dedicated fans because they have to go seek out that forum. Reddit you just browse the main page and end up talking shit about stuff you’ve never heard of before.
That’s where I’m at now after having league pass for years. I’ll watch a few big games in the regular season, but other than that I’ll see you in the playoffs.
If?
Bro Jimmy Butler is your flair
Ambulance was called to the playground in my area and the entire court had kids laid out on the ground and they were all in agony. One of them saw the ambulance and they all got up and ran away. Kids these days.
This reads like flawless satire
The head snapping back is so painful to watch
welcome to the nba. i will continue to blame the league for incentivizing this instead of the players
Players will always do everything they can to exploit the rules of the game when the stakes are so high. Same with soccer to an even worse degree. If there were rules in place to punish that behavior it wouldn’t be nearly as prevelant.
There ARE rules in place for both soccer and NBA. The refs just don’t enforce it.
And that falls on Silver. He could easily fine the refs for not doing it if he cared. He doesn’t. He is the shittiest commissioner in all of sports
The refs are just doing what they are told they’re not innovating this current policy
Tbh I feel like the NBA is way more floppy than soccer nowadays.
Soccer is just worse than NBA in that you HAVE to go down to get a foul call, but then you watch the replay and they did get clipped or held in some way. NBA probably has more phantom stuff.
you dont have NBA players screaming on the ground when they’re not actually hurt. soccer does.
Oh give shai time. And tbf most of the time the players are getting a cleat to the calf/shin. It doesn’t feel good
Yeah I’ve been pretty surprised actually by how few fouls are called in world cup games. A lot of pushing and shoving and even tackling and the ref just says nope
Soccer has rules in place that enforced. You get yellows and sometimes red cards for embellishment
My experience watching the World Cup the last few weeks says this isn’t true. It’s been fun as hell to watch, but it’s so hilarious to watch players writhe on the ground after the slightest bit of contact. It’s much worse than anything I’ve seen in the NBA
It’s really hard to watch, especially when they roll around on the ground while the other team takes possession and everybody just pretends like there isn’t a dude dead on the ground until he sloooowly gets up and just awkwardly rejoins the game lol
Watching them realize they didn’t get the call, stop pretending to need an EMT, get up and run totally normal is both hilarious and extremely embarrassing for them.
One guy actually sold me because it was so egregious. I genuinely thought maybe he fractured his leg. Nope, got the yellow card and scampered off.
Got that harden level snapback locked in already it’s crazy.
I was always convinced that harden did this because with the beard you can see him whip his head back lol
It’s obviously summer league so who knows how AJ will play in the league but the league needs to crack down on this…
They implemented the flopping foul a few years ago and have only punished players for flopping like 10 times total since
Thank you for giving proper recognition to Harden here. People keep saying SGA but these are the guys that grew up the last decade+ watching Harden fling his head back, yeah AHHHH, and go to the line constantly. These guys aren’t emulating SGA they are emulating Harden. SGA was just the first of the Harden kid crop to enter the league
I associate the headsnap with Harden and Brunson, while SGA is the master of the pushoff-to-falling combo
He legit might give himself whiplash at some point.
“Stop doing that” ~ his future chiropractor
“Stop going to a chiropractor” - his future orthopedic surgeon
It’s wild how many stories you can find of chiropractors injuring, paralyzing, and killing people by “adjusting” their neck. It absolutely blows my mind that people are still seeking out that quack treatment. Go find a masseuse, doctor, or PT.
http://whatstheharm.net/chiropractic.html
Maybe don’t believe something that came to be from a ghost religion.
“Keep doing that” ~ his future rich chiropractor
NBA has to deal with it harshly. Remove this shit from the game immediately.
Flopping has been a problem for over 20 years now and they refuse to do anything about it, it’s ridiculous
Shit is infuriating
It’s even more annoying because as others have pointed out, when you get hit, if you’re actually playing basketball, you absorb the hit and stay focused on making the shot or blocking the shot. You don’t flop around like a god-damned dead fish. The refs shouldn’t be fooled by this. Snapping your head and flailing your limbs should be the first giveaway that it’s fake and should trigger a reflexive no-call.
Yes it is
Fans moving right from the World Cup to this. Natural transition.
He’s a natural
Just needs to work a bit more on his “AYYYYY” bag
Needs to be grimacing like he’s going through childbirth too
By gawd, that’s Carlos Boozer’s music!
“AAAND OOOONE!!!!!” or “GET IN THERE!!!!”
Ayyyyy Jayyyyy
(Insert LeBron laying on floor peeking through fingers, looking for a call here…)
Bro immediately equipped SGA signature flops with his initial VC
There’s really an easy way to stop this. Continue play after selling a foul and have it be reviewed from league office crew and if deemed to not be a foul but baiting refs to call foul, penalize the player. The penalty can be within game or tacked on to the next game. Imo, the penalty should be a foul called on the player selling the foul. It’s not too harsh but it let’s that player know that they can’t continue that style of play.
They already have a flopping rule, they just don’t want to enforce it
The Shai generation is coming
Harden farted so Shai could shit
Exactly. Harden wrote the commandments, and Shai is the first scholar of Harden.
…are the commandments shitted-up cheeks?
Straight out of the Book of Shai
Absolutely Shaimless
Were people not watching when Harden was doing these things?
He was way worse but people here arent old enough to remember lol
Brunson and Wade too. It’s part of the game. It’s ok the annoyed about it but selling fouls will always be a part of basketball
Pretending sga started this lmfao
Didn’t start it but he definitely mastered it.
Prime Manu and Harden erasure
“LOOK WHAT YOU’VE (he’s*) DONE!”
And just like that, 90% of millennials stopped watching the NBA.
Yeah, right. I’m sorry, but I can’t take this seriously. Y’all always say this, but for once, please actually follow what you preach.
Most of these are fouls but his head swing game is already elite. Doesn’t even need the braids.
Yeah summer league is foul city. But he’s exaggerating a lot
The gospel of shai has spread far and wide
The first few were really egregious, but as the video went on there were a couple where he got absolutely decked.
It undercuts the argument to include legitimate fouls. If OP only included the first 3-4 clips I’d have been sufficiently pitch-forked.
Yeah he’s getting mugged on pretty much all of these
He’s getting mugged but not in a way that would cause the reaction he’s making
Who cares? If he’s being fouled he’s being fouled. If the refs don’t see it I’m not mad at for making sure they do
The simplest answer is that if they’ll use it while being fouled, they’ll use it while not being fouled and it will work.
The problem with all embellishment is that the game deteriorates into who can do it the most/best. I think you’ll find that hockey fans are huge fans of the embellishment penalty.
He has the whole veteran package already
The 6’10 Shai. That shit will lead to some of the biggest meltdowns in r/nba history
Embiid broke this sub at one point too
Harden was literally Hitler
People have fickle memories. Peak Harden hate was when the young likeable Jazz had Ricky Rubio guarding him with no hands.
That pissed me off so much as a Jazz fan, like we literally weren’t allowed to play basketball.
Not even that - he was guarding him from behind. In a playoff game. Down 3-0. And it worked.
The whiplash head bob gotta fucking go
All playoffs these mfers were doing it
Next they’ll be rolling around like the soccer players constantly
They already rolling around constantly.
Genuinely, watching the world cup… I think the NBA is worse when it comes to flopping
Soccer players will literally act like their ACL exploded to sell a call. Like rolling on the ground for a bit
football players get hit way harder and hits are more painful than anything that happens in a basketball court.
Not even close
Really?? This whole world cup Ive been thinking “maybe the NBA isnt that bad at flopping”
Adam silver calls it gamesmanship
Unfortunately Lakers fans will have to get used to it considering your starting backcourt are the masters of it
He’s getting fouled for real on a lot of these though
He’s still flopping on them though. Like the one Cody Williams reaches in and smacks his arm and he throws his head back. Not any different from what Harden and Shai do
When will people learn that flopping and selling are two different things
“selling” is lame as fuck too. No one wants to watch that shit.
I’m not saying it’s good it’s just not the same thing.
It also wouldn’t be necessary if refs didn’t punish players who play through contact
Clearly you’ve only watched the NBA through highlights. Players have sold contact for the entire history of the game.
they refuse to learn. im arguing with a friend over this exact thing right now.
The third play he grabs the guys arm and swings it up near his head.
But…he got fouled regardless. You just acknowledged it.
It’s the extra snap that he’s giving these fouls that is annoying people. Do you have to pretend to be shot when you’ve only been slapped.
He’s definitely got that “World Cup” energy on some of these
it’s not his fault he has a yoshi neck
Ah it begins
Then call a foul on the defender, and a tech on Dybantsa for flopping.
All of the plays going to the rim were legit fouls.
I dont think people know what a foul is and isn’t anymore
I dunno, the head snap is disgusting.
So take the foul and don’t accentuate the contact.
Yeah did I miss something? Lol
Hes getting mauled on all these.
A superior NBA player playing against people who will never play in the NBA cant seem to keep said NBA player in front of them MORE NEWS AT 11!
Most of these look like rookie defense insta fouls. There’s a reason it takes 10 to foul out it would appear.
Yes you did miss something lol, he’s not getting mauled. He’s throwing his head back like he got smoked in the face with a soccer ball on the playground.
Mauled is an overstatement and a half. However nobody cares about players getting fouled, it’s the reaction of throwing his head back and forth more than JFK or Ray Charles that’s pathetic to watch.
Can you genuinely explain to me, given he’s being mauled and nearly executed while thousands casually watch on, when and where he’s getting hit in the head that is causing the massive head jerks that he is experiencing on every play?
That’s not the point bozo. If you get hit on the arm, why are you snapping your head back? Flop
Because the ref won’t call it. He dunked on three people and was mauled the whole way to the basket and nothing was called. Don’t be mad at him be mad at the referee or the the guys who don’t stop fouling
He really is, a couple of those drives are actual hard fouls, but the overselling them looks so ugly
Someone had his whole wrist gripped in one of these. How is that even defending
He needs to add a scream
AAYYYYYY
OH MY GAWWWDD
Jordan had them doing fadeaways, Steph had them chucking 3s, sga has them head snapping and flopping
Old heads will complain but they just don’t understand the timing/flexibility/muscle control it takes to snap your head back and throw your arms up while falling. Especially when there’s no contact to those areas. It takes serious time in the gym and players back in the day just weren’t athletic enough to pull it off.
Those plumbers and custodians would be walking around in a neck brace if they had to neck snap like these youngins are doing. They’re not built like that
Started well before sga but I get hes the new poster boy
For real. James Harden erasure
Imagine thinking players grew up copying Shaivonte. These kids are like 20. They grew up on Harden my guy.
Harden started this.
Finally the future mega star that gets all the whistles is on my team.
“I hate these flopping mfs man… oh what’s that? My 6’10 rookie wing player gets calls for embellishing? Maybe flopping isn’t that bad” lmao
Trust me when I say league wide flopping is least of wizards fans concerns
Nahh man the disciples of Shay are entering the league 😭
Shaitanists
Shaitheists
He moves kind of herky jerky like Sengun.
Shai-J Dybantsa
If the offensive player creates contact, and snaps his head back or flops then automatic offensive foul. You created the contact, either play through it or don’t create contact
Please NBA, please actually officiate this way
He is watching a lot of world cup lately.
Yeah you dont get to make those jokes about soccer anymore when the back to back mvp is sga. There is just as much flopping in the nba today as there is in soccer
Do refs just watch the neck and nothing else?
the second half of the vid are all clear fouls tbf
Yes he plays an ugly game. Rules will change and he will have to adjust.
That’s optimistic
Rules will change and he will have to adjust.
Delulu
Thank you Shai
The era of tik tok ball knowledge is among us
The shai effect
The only people thinking this is a SGA specific thing are those who care too much about lame media narratives. Players have been selling contact for the entire history of the sport. People only started caring about it when they realized they could farm engagement by shitting on an unexpectedly great star player.
yeah - I didn’t even think about shai, my mind went straight to harden when I saw this.
Mf gonna have neck problems. Yall saw it here first. 😂
He’s already got the NBA acting down! 🤦🏾♂️
ShaiJ Dylbantseous-Alexander
They’re all fouls
They are but a lot of the biggest foul baiters are actually getting fouled and are still hated.
Pathetic behavior, instead of playing the game they learn how to flop.
DAY 1 NBA READY
He’s already hated on because he’s viewed as “too cocky” which is absurd cause why shouldn’t a player like him have alot of confidence in themselves?
Weak
It’s crazy how y’all don’t have this smoke for Luka or Jokic
I hope bro’s neck is ok
He def is getting fouled, but he’s extremely good at selling the call
Like watching soccer
