I get that players are seemingly “doing the right thing” when they make choices like this, but it only emboldens the ownership and leads to more concessions from players in future CBA negotiations.

This is where the CBA is pushing. If a player wants to have a long HoF career spanning multiple championships with the same team, they MUST take less money than they otherwise could.

Good for him either way. But players shouldn’t feel bad about taking max contracts. Also baseball players should be looking at this calculus and gagging. This could be their future.

At some point, enough money becomes enough and people start to prioritize things like happiness, family, winning, etc. I think we’re starting to see that with superstar players now taking these smaller deals in some cases. Real talk though Donovan basically did something similar to Brunson where he took his max now as opposed to waiting a year. I would be shocked if Wemby didn’t take max money available, regardless of what year it’s signed.

I see nothing wrong with this. I would have thought more of the top tier players would do this considering they can use their star power to make more off the court to help mitigate this. It’s like a lot of people will take less money to stay at a place where the culture is better and they enjoy the people they work with. It always confuses me when people say this only helps the owners save money, when clearly the idea is to use the money to help the team so they will spend the players regardless.

I can see the arguments both for and against taking the max available, but part of me thinks Wemby wants to inherently go against the grain in most of what he does. So if taking less money means shaking things up, he’ll be more inclined to do it.

wemby taking less would be huge for the spurs. even 10% under the 25% max frees up like $25m in cap over the life of the deal. thats a quality starter or two. most guys take every dollar they can get so if this is real it shows hes locked in on winning
