Melo was generally NY’s best or second-best defender in the playoffs honestly. He wasn’t going to shut guys down all regular season*, but I was never worried about him when it mattered.

* There actually was that one year where, for a few months, the team was so injured he somehow became our primary defender against most opposing stars 2-4. He had pretty much the best iso D metrics in the NBA over that stretch.

Yeah people underrate how much body language and effort matters. Steph has somehow started to put even more effort into defense as he’s gotten older and it works to energize the team, and makes it so he isn’t just a traffic cone. Luka hasn’t done that.

It makes sense when you consider there’s a direct correlation between offensive stars that are lazy on defense and retiring ringless. It’s hard to build a championship culture when your best player has to gameplanned around because they are so lazy on one side of the ball.

Harden and Melo come to mind as two players who had no excuse to be as useless on defense as they were as both did not have the physical limitations of someone like Steph or even like a Kyrie who could step up in big moments.

I think Steph’s defense was definitely questioned up to 2016. He started packing on muscle and made himself a passable defender after that though. Paid close attention to his assignment most plays. Draymond said they did a lot of work getting Steph’s defensive level boosted.
