Exactly 1 year ago today, Nico makes monumental call to D’Lo: “It’s about to be a problem”
I mean he wasn’t wrong, it was definitely a problem
I still crack up whenever people say he’s still loading
Funny enough this video wouldn’t load for me lmao
Imagine how big the chip on his shoulder is now
“defense wins championships”
“let’s get d’angelo russell on our team”
Bro’s name starts with a D. It was a decent hyphothesis
Luka Doncic starts with an L, cant win with that
Wuka DeOncic
Not to be confused for that one chick
‘Angelo Rusell
DiAngelo Vickers
That was their mistake. They got D’lo when they should have gotten D’high
The Will of D
It’s amazing how a guy like Nico fell upward and became a multimillionaire with positions of high status. More than half of reddit could have a better job while in charge of the Mavericks. At the very least they wouldn’t have traded Luka for an aging and always injured AD.
Don’t ever let anyone gaslight you into thinking that we live in a meritocracy.
More than half of reddit could have a better job while in charge of the Mavericks
More than half of reddit is too scared to call people to talk on the phone. So I guess they would’ve avoided that trade by default.
Yeah, more than half of Reddit doesn’t have the experience to make these kinds of things happen. Even poor trades.
I think you are onto something. Nico definitely could have gotten better return on Luka, if he asked around. But imagine all those calls
That’s why you send out an email blast to the entire league mailing list and if you don’t get anything good offered in return you just say you were hacked boom.
You guys are jerking too hard. Any living person could make a trade with Luka just by announcing he’s available on twitter or wherever. Boom you instantly have 29 offers, most better than the Lakers offer Nico took.
That’s like saying being in the C suite is easy for a big company while focusing on one aspect of the job
Brother you guys were the ones focusing by saying nonody on Reddit could’ve made the trade. Anyone in the world could trade Luka fucking Doncic in his prime if they were stupid enough to want to do so.
And are you really going to bat for fucking upper management at big companies lol
I half imagine a literal stuttering child with um..uhh…yeah…filed in every fifth word while trying to hold a conversationx
Nico was a pretty good GM until that Luka trade. Only true mishap was not extending Brunson before his sudden rise
He built Luka’s two best rosters to date with multiple low-bargain deals
Nah trading Luka was like fucking a goat. I dont care how many fences you build dude youre always just gonna be a goat fucker in my eyes
GOAT analogy
”….but fuck one sheep!”
Judas was a good disciple before he betrayed Jesus.
don’t forget dismantling one of the best medical teams in the league that leon rose pounced on. we might owe nico a statue even more than the lakers do.
Didn’t extend Brunson, traded Luka fucking Doncic for an old Anthony Davis. He got a couple of athletic wings and a backup center. I mean those moves aren’t bad, but any casual could have told you that was a good idea.
Any casual would’ve also told you a lot of other things
Not even defending dude…but this type of “anything they did right anyone could’ve done.. anything they did wrong makes them the worst ever” argument is lame.
Those “couple of wings and a backup center” built a finals team. You also didn’t mention the great deal they got for Kyrie.
As I said, the Brunson move was a bad one, but they recovered well from it. The Luka move was out of character and made people forget how good Nico was until then
I mean, it wasn’t “out of character” if you read Nico’s reasoning from the man himself. He got guys he knew from Nike who had what he felt was a Mamba Mentality, even if they were injured or inconsistent.
When he got complete control of the team through being the only voice to the owner, he made the one big move he’d been wanting to make that others wouldn’t let him make prior to that.
I was gaming on a discord call with a friend who hates most sports, definitely hates basketball.
“Holy fucking shit they traded Luka doncic for Anthony Davis”
The friend who doesn’t like basketball “why in the fuck would they do that????”
Have the casuals get in Rob Pelinka’s ear
No one but Knicks front office saw what Brunson would become. Making trades isn’t like 2k where you just add up value, so its unfair to just simplify it to a coupe of wings and a center.
The luka trade is an all time wtf moment and rightfully tarnished his rep.
No he wasn’t. Dennis Lindsey obviously did all the good moves that Nico gets credited with. Before Lindsey came the kind of moves Nico made was the Christian Wood crap, after, well, the Luka trade.
Lindsey is the guy that turned the Pistons around from worst in the league to #1 seed in 2 years.
I think that the toughest part of being a CEO is that their job, more than anything else, is to be the scapegoat. So when they see someone take the fall for a massive shitstorm like that, they’re happy to pay top dollar for it.
I, for one, would never want to be CEO, no matter how much it pays. The sweet spot is really somewhere near the top, but not the top. I have a friend, really smart guy, really hardworking, he deserves all his success. Got installed as a CEO for a local company that got acquired by a large multinational, and he tells me it’s the worst fucking job he’s ever had. The board and the investors want short term profit. His employees want (and need) long term growth and sustainability. Despite his job title, he doesn’t have any real power. His job basically amounts to just trying to talk down both sides and find a middle ground that both sides will be able to live with (spoiler, there’s none). If he sides too strongly with the board, then morale tanks, productivity suffers, people start leaving, he’s takes through the coals on social media, he’s shown as a cautionary tale of how “corporate is ruining x business”. If he sides too strongly with the employees, then board can say he’s insubordinate, combative, etc etc. They put him there, they can kick him out. So yeah. Rock, meet hard place.
Either way, if things go to hell, he gets to be the one put in front of the firing squad. So that’s why CEO’s tend to “fail upward”. The board looks at someone who’s willing to be the face of layoffs and restructuring, and then say, yeah, hire that schmuck.
I don’t understand to be honest. Don’t rich people want to make money? Why hire idiots in important roles
Mark Cuban: Man why don’t stars want me man?!
Nico: I got you
Mark Cuban: You’re hired
*Proceeds to let Brunson walk for nothing. Proceeds to trade Luka for nothing
Perception > reality in corporate environments
There’s no way he’s that stupid. He was definitely a fall guy to get Luka to the Lakers
The guy built a roster around Luka that reached the finals with only Kyrie as the high profile one and letting Brunson walk was pretty much Cuban’s call. Imo that Luka trade was something he was forced to do by the ownership and there’s a owner to owner “transaction” inbetween
I know people keep bringing up AD injury issues but he only missed 2 post season games during his 6 seasons as a Laker. Luka has missed more.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for the trade but AD showed up for us when it mattered and he was a pivotal piece in our 2020 championship.
There’s no reason he had to be doing all that, lol
He thought he was LeBron filming the documentary
They don’t love you like that
Not this shit again 😂😂
DLo peaked that short time he had with the Nets
Dlo was also averaging like 18⁄6 in his return to the Lakers and set the 3 point record but the same problems he always had came back up, which was physicality in meaningful games.
Good innings eater not an ace
he always run like there’s concrete blocks on his feet, even on his rookie year
That squad was so fun Dlo became on of my favorite players for a while. Him and the Fro.
Yup they hade a nice vibe ngl
It was a really fun team to watch
He was actually pretty good with the Warriors and at least serviceable with the Lakers for his first season back, and then started slipping back into old, bad ways, like trying to be a volume shooter and lack of effort on defense. By his third season in LA he was like a compilation album of his worst aspects as a player.
Considering he was traded from the Lakers only after his first two years in the league then the Nets did him dirty for KD, I think all that stuff messes up his confidence
I’ll never forget the time he single-handedly beat the sixers in OT with the Wolves.
Hey Dlo also had a really good run with his Lakers return. It was fun and he was a regular season team beater until he got shutdown by the Nuggets.
True I think the expectations and pressure of the Lakers got to him tbh
He had great moments then disappeared in the playoffs
Corniest fucking shit ever. “Ay man have someone record while you’ve got your shirt off and we do this call, make it seem like some mythical high level ball talk.”
yeah why did they record this? so goddamn weird
They recorded it for a larger video on Russell’s YouTube channel.
that doesn’t change the fact that it’s weird. in fact that’s almost worse
If you squint your eyes a bit it’s the intro to a porn video.
“What you’re doing step DLo? “
Nothing to see here but two delusional idiots fooling themselves and each other
“It’s about to be (someone else’s) problem”
“It’s about to be a problem (that we have to deal with)”
0 days without this franchise being an embarrassment.
STOP TROLLING US WE ARE TRYING OUR BEST RIGHT NOW
As horrible as the Luka trade was, if you’re conspiracy brained, I think you could have maybe seen the vision Nico had. Right up until this call. This felt like somehow lighting the plot on fire to show how bad you already lost it.
So, just out of curiosity, where is Nico these days?
Getting ready to interview for the Celtics GM
Going to expensive restaurants and living “the lifestyle” off the back of his elite upper management career
He also probably literally convinced himself it was only bad luck that it didn’t work out.
Fuck this dude recording his every move for
Quite the connection these 2 have. What if it was D’Lo who convinced Nico to trade Luka? After the Swaggy P shit, I wouldn’t put it past him
Nah, let Nico’s idiocy stand on its own, don’t let him pin it on anyone else.
Nico strike me as someone with enough hubris that he wouldn’t accept someone stealing his credit, good or bad
I just found out DLo now plays for the Grizzlies.
It’s about to be a problem
The warriors were stupid enough to sign And trade for this guy for 117 million dollars, but smart enough to trade him to the wolves less than a year later
“Emperor Palpatine level Basketball Terrorist calls middling Basketball Terrorist”
The exact moment Jason Kidd decided to fully stab Nico in the back.
This shit is hilarious 😂
The Klay is in Miami, I might start getting in the gym a little bit was the best. Bro was just running amok out there.
So cool that we got this candid footage! Wow! I wonder if D’Lo knew he was being filmed during this historic moment 🤣🤣
This was really the only thing he was good at as GM. Convincing himself he was friends with players he met as a Nike exec, and using that same flattery to butter up their egos enough they’d want to join his team.
It definitely was a problem!
Damn this actually might have been his last season in the league
How quickly a difference a year makes in the NBA
This was the case of the coach and the GM not being on the same page on a hire. What a waste of everyone’s time. Now the coach and GM arent on the team
Everybody has a chip on their shoulder
Can you please not?
I wasn’t aware that my opinion of Nico Harrison’s basketball intelligence could fall any further, but here we are.
This reminds me of the first episode of succession where kendall was using slang during an acquisition meeting and the other company decided not to take him seriously.
[deleted]
Worse. He traded Luka.
can’t believe its 2026 and there’s still real breathing people that believe the luka trade had anything to do with basketball or nico and not literally just a move for the billionaire owners to increase the revenue of the league
Reminds me of this time I met up with a girl from highschool and we ended up going back to my place. Took off her shirt and her stomach looked like a piece of paper after you wrinkle it up a bunch of times
Things always sound better in our heads. Awesome girl though.
Son, delete this.
fuck nah
