[Highlight] Collin Cowherd on Jacob Tobey being fired by the Spurs: Apparently you can get fired in America for cheating on your girlfriend, not even your wife, feels like he should hire an attorney
He should become an NFL coach instead. They’ll let it go.
Or President.
Any politician, but definitely preferred experience for president
I know this is a sports sub but this is why american politics and the country itself are in the shape it’s in. Too many blanket statements that just leave people to believe they’re all the same so why try. I don’t think we have a Zohran or Bernie cheating scandal coming
Or Obama or Biden
not all politicians, not when the other side is in power and if they are not in the Senate
Bill Clinton
Not rapey enough
and she’s not a teenager
I think his mistake was cheating on his girlfriend with Spurs player’s sister. What he should have done was married his girlfriend and then cheated on his wife with Spurs player’s wife. Just like HoF Spurs legend Tony Parker. I am not sure why and how this is considered a fireable offense. Sure in TX we can get fired with no cause but ya this seems like the organization is overstepping it’s boundaries.
No the mistake was letting his Ex post it on his Instagram
At the time she wasn’t his ex. She played it quite well posted it in the middle of the.night so it was up for hours before he woke up.
Why is it even their business? ‘They’ll let it go’ who cares about that?
College football coaches could kill a student in the middle of campus and get away with it as long as there was no video
I have a feeling a Texas university would be happy to set this precedent video or not.
Brian Kelly literally did this at Notre Dame.
Very much depends on how good or valuable you are. That’s how this league works too but the NFL is notorious for it.
The more value you have, the more support and people behind you ralling for you and the more forgiving front offices will be.
if it was as easy to find a good NFL coach as it is to find a servicable local play by play guy Vrabel would be on the unemployment line too
I feel like the fact that the person he cheated with is the sister of a player on the team has something to do with it
Nuance is lost on modern media.
Or at least it feels that way.
Nuance doesn’t sell

It’s intentional
Cowherd is all about hot takes and rage bait. His audience isn’t smart enough for nuanced conversations.
80% of the world’s population can’t handle nuanced conversations imo
Don’t think it’s nuance when it’s a major fucking factor
Literally everyone trying to say he shouldn’t be fired seem to ignore this point.
And they’re ignoring the bigger point: it’s brought a ton of bad publicity to the Spurs. It’s all over social media. This shouldn’t be surprising to anyone that’s had a job. If you bring bad publicity to a company due to your personal actions, you will be fired. This is extremely basic stuff.
Especially if youre in a PR facing position too. Youre entire value to the business is to generate good publicity.
Yep. All anyones going to talk about from now on in regards to him will be his personal life. Hes a distraction at this point. And not worth keeping around. You think anytime he interviews a player the organization wants the top comment to be “isnt this the dude that cheated on his GF of 6 years with a players sister?”.
Thats beside the fact that he wasnt exactly popular in the first place. If it was Sean Elliot? He probably wouldnt be fired. Hes a staple of the franchise and the organization. Most Spurs fans love Sean. But this dude is someone people didnt care for anyways.
Not just all over social media. It was all over his social media.
The spurs are tagged in the bio. It’s mostly posts about his team and his work for the spurs. Basically a company profile.
I don’t think that Waters’ sister being the mistress has much to do with it. If you work a public facing job and your profile is used to promote your work, you could easily get fired for much less than what happened here lol
His ex is legendary for this. They way she handled it exposed him as a cheater and cost him his cushy job.
You’d think people would understand that bringing bad pr to your job can lead to you losing that job by now but I’ve learned over the last hour that’s not the case. A lot of people being purposely obtuse on this one.
The people being obtuse probably didn’t view his IG profile when it was still public? It has Spurs all over it. He was even reppin the org on public gatherings. He was definitely gonna get fired.
I’ve had a job where there’s an entire section in the offer letter about personal conduct, which includes all social media accounts as well that basically says I’m representing the company in all aspects of my life both personally and professionally.
So lets all go get some hookers and blow!!
should you be fired for hooking up with your co-worker’s sister? Your co-worker who works in a different department?
If it causes workplace drama, aka negatively affecting the business, then yes it’s 100% grounds for dismissal…
If I were the cheatiing piece of shit, I will let my lawyer argue the 100%ness of that.
And you will lose that case and waste a ton of money on top of the job you lost
Acting like a sports team is a normal workplace is a choice
Anytime someone does this they might as well sound off a siren that says “I’m a fucking moron”
Working for a sports team is like a regular job for the people who are not actually on the basketball team. For example, this is the kind of shit you’d be fired for in a normal job…. hence him getting fired for this shit.
him not being an athlete makes his job closer to ours tho
All the more reason for the spurs to just fire him and find someone else to work their highly paid position.
It’s not like they’re going to struggle to replace him lol
Is there any actual reason that this should be treated differently, though? I’m not seeing it.
If these folks are professionals, they should let personal stuff stay personal and professional stuff stay professional - there’s no reason it actually has to affect the workplace. It’s not like they work closely together, anyway.
Sure, the only reason the org is getting bad publicity for an employee cheating on their girlfriend is it’s a sports org. If this happened anywhere else it wouldn’t be news and nobody would have gotten fired
If you’re an accountant? Probably not.
If you’re a public facing figure of a company and you did so cheating on your girlfriend, causing a PR issue? Seems a lot more reasonable
Possibly if it creates a hostile work environment.
hostile work environment is not “he fucked my sister”
HWE is discrimination based on a protected class
“That’s not a hate crime”
“Well I hated it!”
Lol. No. HWE environment is not just discrimination based on a protected class.
This is what leads people to think that shitty job situations they work in don’t qualify for that.
Not saying “he fucked my sister” is part of a HWE, but it’s not limited to what you said it is.
I’ve never seen in any HR policy that being involved with a coworker sibling is against the rules or evem frowned upon.
I would love the reaction if you asked your boss or HR representative if it was cool
If your company actively promotes itself as something of a “wholesome,” “family values,” “traditional” organization and you draw negative attention to it because you’re a highly-visible on-screen spokesperson, then, yes.
You can call it hogwash or not, but “Spurs Culture”/“The Spurs Way” is the identity they promote. Popovich, the Spurs Nuns, The Admiral, Tim Duncan…all iconic figures that are meant to represent the team’s values of “clean basketball.” Again, you can poke all sorts of holes in the image but the Spurs take it seriously.
I also think it’s very, very possible that he will get his job back down the line. People love a redemption story and the national media will move on sooner than later. For now, though, he needs to just take the public shaming and then do the usual “I’m taking time to take accountability/apology tour” PR shtick, even if it is phony. The worst thing he could do is fight the team’s decision.
[deleted]
I mean, it’s Lindy Waters. He’s not on the team anymore and my girlfriend who watched every single game with me would say “I have never seen this dude in my life” every single time he stepped on the floor.
Still a bad look for Tobey but I’m willing to bet a lot of orgs would let this one slide.
Back in the day, Tony Parker was caught cheating on his wife, a famous Hollywood actress. His mistress was his teammate Brent Barry’s wife. It caused alot of unnecessary drama for the Spurs organization back then.. and its clear they are trying to avoid such drama now.
imagine your wife cheating on you and it’s with tony parker, at least cheat on me with a hot sexy dude
I really don’t care how much the dude played. I also don’t care about this dude losing his job or keeping it. I’m just pointing out that seemingly all the people defending it are ignoring that who his side piece was is playing a role in it more than what he did.
do the sisters of players lose to ability to consent to relationships with other adults?
It’s not about the relationship being nonconsensual. It’s about the broadcaster creating terrible PR for the team.
A public-facing face (or voice) of the team cheated on his partner with a player’s sister. It blew up all over social media. That’s a PR nightmare, so obviously he’d get fired. Texas is an at-will state.
Did we all collectively forget the fallout from the CEO having an affair with the HR person at the coldplay concert?
You seriously want to compare CEO having affair with HR person from the same company to a guy having sex with a sister of someone employed by the same company? I get that some prude people can get outrage about the cheating part but an argument that you cannot have a relationship with a family member of someone you work with will absolutely not hold in any court
what court? they could have fired him for driving a silver car to work as far as the law is concerned.
Neither will having an affair with your subordinate, that’s the whole point here. Neither of those are illegal but both are very damaging to the company brand, which in the end is all it comes down to.
People always want to apply legal standards to things that aren’t about breaking the law, it’s weird. He’s not going to trial for this. He’s not going to jail for this. He lost his job; for some reason a lot of people can’t fathom the difference.
It does muddy the Waters
What’d you say, Chuck?
When a guy is bangin your sister…come on now
She is a player’s sister who is single and is not part of the organization. If you dated your co-workers sister is that even an employment issue.
I don’t work for a billion dollar entertainment organization who almost certainly has some kind of “conduct detrimental to the team” type clauses in everyone’s contracts to get out of PR disasters that can impact your bottom line
Also matters what your value is. If Wemby did this you maybe fine him or suspend a hand full of games, but he brings too much value to completely let go unless he does something truly fucked up
This Tobey fella? Much easier to stomach canning him and moving on from the distraction
Yea, ain’t no way you’re going to be allowed to read out ads or speak about local businesses if you have that kind of misconduct tied to your persona. Money is tied to public perception and company reputation. He’s not some desk worker sitting in the back by the annex.
He’s not even on the Spurs anymore. He’s a free agent lol
Idc if he was fucking Lindy Waters on the side, I think it’s dumb to fire him for that.
Welcome to the modern era my boy; optics are everything
I’m going to call bullshit on that
If this was all kept behind close doors and the team found out they wouldn’t care. We’re talking about a tv commentator and the sister of a benchwarmer, I don’t see much of a real conflict of interest being material here
He got caught in some really bad PR, the team looked at how much of a distraction the Vrabel nonsense became and decided to cut bait just to avoid the headache.
Why? Are players sisters protected classes or something. Do sisters of NBA players lose their rights to make their own decisions?
Do the Spurs have a policy that says you can’t have romantic involvement with a player’s family? That really doesn’t seem relevant unless you just really like juicy gossip. It’s not any more unethical than cheating with someone random.
Guy is not even on the team anymore and the sister is a grown woman who can make her own decisions
Why would a players adult sister be off limits? If it was his wife I could see the issue, but I really don’t get why this should matter.
But still why does that make a difference. It was consensual. Shes not married either.
Who was the player?
Waters
That viral tik tok of homegirl wanting a hall pass with him now extends to his family I guess
My guess is banging a players sister wasn’t the exact wording on the termination notice, probably should save his $$$
The wording would that he broke the morality clause in his contract, which is standard for public facing positions like this. And it doesn’t matter who he cheated with, once it went viral and all the headlines were “Spurs announcer cheats…” it was over for him.
Yep. Morality clause envelops a wide scope.
Specifically for situations like this. It’s vague on purpose and good luck fighting against it if you signed a contract with that in there.
Actually the opposite, vagueness in a contract usually benefits the person who didn’t draft the contract. Contra Proferentem. However with every thing in the legal system the people with the high priced lawyers have the ultimate advantage, so he’s most likely screwed.
Yeah I mean either way he’s screwed because there is no clear cut definition and it would take a lot of money and effort to prove he was wrongfully fired. And then what? I guess sue for lost wages and maybe emotional distress or something? He’s not gonna go back to work for them.
Why are we assuming this is vague though? I work with morality in clauses somewhat frequently and I’d never say they’re vague…
As has been stated, as a forward facing part of the organization they are well within their rights to tell you what is or is not acceptable. Federal rights/privileges donor apply to private employers or businesses. Reddit NEETs do not understand this. And they all live at home and have no job.
The fact Collin Cowherd is talking about it is exactly why they fired him lol
It doesn’t even have to be true. He let his GF have access to his unlocked phone and she created a PR crisis for the team. No one is challenging that reason.
A lot of these vague morality clauses are a bullshit way of empowering corporations to stick their nose into your personal life, though.
What next? A bunch of people get mad because someone has sex out of wedlock, or has a threesome, or is a swinger. And religiously conservative Texans on the internet think that’s a sin and complain on social media, so they get fired?
Consensual sex acts that violate no law should stay a personal matter. We may disapprove of it, but it has nothing to do with the workplace.
And it’s ironic, because many players and owners cheat on their partners - it’s pretty well known. But this guy was expendable enough that they could toss him aside.
Having a clause isn’t the same as unlimited access. It gives you flexibility for cases just like this. No need to go Fahrenheit 451 here.
I’m saying that’s way too much flexibility. It isn’t your boss’s place to be the monogamy police and be a moral inquisitor.
I don’t like cheating, but your personal life and professional life are separate, and the corporation you work for shouldn’t be sticking its nose into your bedroom. As long as you don’t break any laws and it’s between consenting adults, what you do on your own time away from work is your choice. Doesn’t matter if some nosey people on the internet think it’s a sin.
I doubt this would have been such a big deal if the person he was cheating with wasn’t the sister of a Spurs player. It makes the entire thing messier. If you’re going to cheat, don’t cheat where you eat.
Also, part of having a front facing role for an organization is not embarrassing the company. If the actor for Jake from State Farm had a notorious cheating scandal with, idk, a State Farm exec’s girlfriend and people started flooding State Farm’s social media with comments about it, how soon do you think that actor is going to last?
This situation has absolutely impacted his workplace. If he had kept it under wraps he wouldn’t be getting fired.
Nah. Spurs weren’t in his business at all. If they were, this wouldn’t be an issue.
The morality clause is working as intended. His infidelity became a public controversy, so they felt they had to act.
Probably doesn’t even need a morality clause. If the Spurs are willing to pay his unemployment, they don’t need to invoke anything. Just an at-will employee being let go
Do people understand you can get fired things that aren’t illegal?
Oh im sorry, I thought this was America!
I didn’t hear no bell
Okay Randy
Texas is the least free state in the Union, don’t let the propaganda fool ya
Exactly. And in most places, employment is at will so you can leave whenever and they can fire you whenever.
They can fire you whenever, and you can sue them whenever, it’s the American way
Right to work means you can be fired for any reason including no reason. Welcome to Texas
It’s actually an extremely common misconception on this website, or I guess in general.
I’ve been on reddit for a long time and every time someone notable gets fired you can usually find several commenters who basically do think that way.
People on here are just majorly lacking life experience. I saw a girl on antiwork crashing out because she got fired after her boss found her Reddit account (guessing she logged in on the work computer lmao) and saw endless posts of her shitting on her job and coworkers. Then went on Reddit for sympathy as if those actions wouldn’t have clear consequences
Antiwork is mostly just fake posts now anyway
most of reddit is, sadly
It’s funny as a non American the idea of at will employment is kinda nuts
Like in Australia there’s a lot of protections for workers you can’t just literally be let go one day without a proper procedure, reasoning and financial security etc.
In this case he would still most likely be let go because of conduct rules and stuff ofc like a national scandal bringing disrepute to your employer and stuff, defs passes the bar
At will employment is the norm in the US, but not the most relevant factor in this case. Tobey has an employment contract: a few weeks ago he signed a multi-year extension to stay as the Spurs play-by-play announcer.
Typically, an employment contract in the US would include defined reasons for which the Spurs could fire Tobey “for cause” without owing severance. If he’s otherwise fired, the Spurs would owe Tobey some amount of money.
Don’t know enough details of what happened with Tobey to say for sure how his dismissal was handled financially, and it’s very likely that we never will.
Not to mention that if part of your job is being a public facing representive of the product, then perception absolutely affects/determines your value.
Especially the Spurs, who pride themselves on having a family-friendly image. They can pretty easily argue that Tobbey broke that and could no longer serve in such a public role
ITT: People who have never spent a minute in the workforce. Having to explain bad PR and workplace chemistry like I’m a goddamn kindergarten teacher SMH
Next ur gonna tell me I can get fired for peeing on the air conditioning filter
FIRST AMMENDMENT
I mean his job is to represent the franchise, why would they keep a guy around with bad pr, it’s not very hard to find announcers
Yes he probably could have gotten away with it if
It wasn’t a players sister
His ex didn’t publicly expose him causing a PR crisis
1, 2, and 3: If he was in any important role for the team and not the easily replaceable TV announcer.
Marv Albert continued broadcasting after his sexual assualt conviction, he was just much better at his job than this guy
Marv Albert was an institution. Most of us have never heard of this guy
Iirc Tirico had a case too and no ones coming after him
Unfortunately 30 years ago that wasn’t treated as seriously as it is now, especially since he plead it down to misdemeanor assault.
I mean Udoka was basically fired right after going to the finals for something very similar. The Spurs definitely consider themselves a world class organization and would probably fire anyone involved in this same scenario.
Doesn’t even matter it’s a players sister imo.
His gf “hacking” his IG and the PR of it all is why he was fired. Russini fucked it up for a lot of cheaters lol
Or those meddling kids
Let me tell you the story of Tony Parker the Great.
His job was to win basketball games.
Is it bad PR? No one gives a shit about it. It’s already blown over.
I mean he got fired what is there be be upset about at this point?
they deleted some thread about it the other day and some guy completely crashed out, claimed it was a conspiracy by the mods to “protect the rich and powerful” (28 year old local play by play guy) and claimed everyone in the thread was a PR agent hired by the spurs.
Lmao that thread was hilarious, it was his ex posting 😂😂
Lindy might give a shit.
I’d bet firing him creates a much bigger story than some guy nobody besides spurs fans have heard of cheating on his girlfriend…
But that’s who matters lol like he’s their announcer. Not saying I’d care too much but I’d think about it when watching games every now and then.
He’s definitely cheated lol
I’m not saying he has or hasn’t cheated, but I am saying the top two things this guy is known for is saying “we’re good LeBron, we have Ben Simmons” and framing every single situation in terms of divorce
might not have the healthiest relationship with relationships
Nah, anyone who immediately goes to bat for a cheater and conveniently leaves out context is surely a loyal partner.
Bro is checking his contract right now 🤣🤣🤣
“If you’re a person who talks for a living, you should be able to cheat on your partner and not be punished for it”
‐Person who talks for a living
Per usually, Cowherd leaving out context.
He got the clicks and fan outrage, all he cares about
At will employment, dumbass
Waitresses get fired for putting on weight in this country, dude.
At will employment still has legal protections. If this policy is applied unequally, for example (other employees were not fired for this same offense of ‘cheating on a gf’), he could very well file for discrimination.
That would require him to somehow show an uneven pattern of application, which would be nearly impossible. He has close to 0 legal case.
As someone else stated, it’s likely different because it involved a team player, and it was broadcasted on social media.
It wasn’t the cheating, it was the inappropriate relationship with a player’s relative lmao
No, it was because it went viral and caused a PR incident for the team
The crime is making the team look bad and being too unimportant to make up for it.
And yes, you can absolutely get fired for that.
Yo it’s wild how many people don’t understand this.
Nevermind that dumbo left kissing booth pics in the house, and gave his shorty the password to his phone while doing the shit.
Fire him just for being a fucking idiot. It’s that simple.
His instagram is basically a business profile.
It’s really not hard to understand why allowing his gf to have access to it, and post all this on there got him fired lol. Even if he didn’t intentionally give her access.
There’s a lot of jobs where something like this would get you fired
I see some people are like “they didn’t need to fire him for this” and…yes they definitely could have kept it behind closed doors but he is in the perfect position of being important enough to be recognized but not so valuable he is hard to replace. A team accountant probably doesn’t get fired for this but then again if it’s a team accountant maybe we never even hear about it.
Regardless I can get why they don’t like the idea of an employee cheating on their partner with a co-worker’s relative.
Is it really inappropriate tho outside of the cheating?Announcer and a relative of a player. No real power dynamic to take advantage of. Kind of a nothing burger to me
Yeah I keep seeing this sentiment on reddit but I don’t see how it’s that relevant.
Sometime people on Reddit are terminally online and don’t live in reality. They think like they’re hs girls watching a soap opera when it comes to relationships.
Reddit teens just see juicy gossip and consider any scandal to be termination-worthy. It’s knee jerk reaction for people to demand every scandal they hear about results in job losses for some reason. It’s not actually any more unethical when you hear who he cheated with.
no this argument is a bunch of nerds who can’t get laid saying it’s weird that someone hooked up with their co-worker’s sister
It’s a bunch of basement dwelling incels who don’t realize putting your employer in a bad light in a public facing job is going to get you fired unless you are amazing/irreprecable
An unmarried person had a consensual relationship with people who is a relative of an employee of his employer. What is inappropriate other than the PR?
Rich assholes who have no idea what its like for normal people lol at will employment is a thing, and being a public face of a company means they can fire you if you embarrass the company publicly
I’m sure he has a contract that allows them to fire him for that reason. I don’t think they would have done it had his girlfriend not burned him on his own account lol.
May have been a bit different if she was just posting about it on her account
[removed]
Shut up, bot.
You can get fired in every state but Montana for any non-discriminatory reason
You mean to tell me that dudes piping down their coworkers’ sisters aren’t a protected class?
What if I build a religion around that concept?
Those damned commies in… Montana?
Cheat on the Director of Accounting’s wife that you met at the holiday party, and I can assure you, it becomes an employment issue
In what way does your scenario relate? Did he bang an executive’s wife?
No I did
How do you cheat on someone else’s wife?
The ime Udoka, you cheat on your girlfriend with someone’s wife and then you cheating on her with another staff member
-allegedly
Colon cowherd cheats and doesn’t like consequences from those actions. That’s what I heard lol
We all make comments or have opinions on things that we don’t personally relate to.
Edit: Generally speaking, not defending anyone (but also not accusing/assuming).
Shhhh the nephews are crashing out over a Colin cowherd clip. Don’t bring logic in here.
Hey man, you dont have to subject us to Colin cowherd on here
He should work for Houston
I mean it is when you look at our president and that he has cheated on all of his wives
Can’t stand Cowherd, man. In this circumstance, relationship with the players is part of the job and the easily replaceable commentator is gonna get dropped if he damages that relationship with the locker room. They aren’t gonna want this guy around the team if he’s gonna be creepin on players sisters and starting drama within the locker room and distracting the team with shenanigans
Maybe a guy whose job is to front for an NBA team should have his shit together.
Also, yada yada at-will employment yada yada.
As usual, dumb man with dumb take
It makes sense, he’s a public facing figure and a face of the spurs franchise whether he likes it or not, he should’ve thought about that before he went around cheating.
Like 95% of the players in the league would be out of a job if the league started enforcing this.
Part of being a public figure. If he was an accountant and his ex posted those pics, nobody would care. But when it gets enough attention to reflect badly on your employer, don’t be surprised when they do CYA at your expense.
Something tells me Cowherd has cheated on a few girlfriends.
But yes, if your conduct is detrimental to the company then yes, they can let you go
She goes in his phone and posts from his account lol they’ve BEEN toxic
Meanwhile, in New England..
Funny how most people on reddit will shit on big business then defend one tooth and nail over some bullshit lol
you can get fired at any time for any reason other than a handful of protected reasons, actually.
Cheating on your finance is not a protected class.
