I’ve never understood this. As far as I’m aware, the rule was made essentially to prevent coaches designating themselves as players (a la Bob Cousy) and to prevent salary cap shenanigans by doing something akin to ‘their player salary is \(1,000,000, but their coaches' salary is \)35,000,000’. Why would it matter if they aren’t being paid then? Who cares?

I could understand if he was getting paid outside of the salary cap, or even if the coaches association complained that he was taking an opportunity from somebody - but this just sounds ridiculously pedantic.

We should want players that are interested in the coaching side because, if nothing else, it would make them better basketball players, teammates and leaders, but also helps them prepare for life after retirement.

Is the NBA gonna complain about the times Pop let Manu run timeouts? What about the last 10 years of Lebron’s career?

A player actually wants to engage further with the sport and, no surprise, the NBA wants to quash it.

He can’t take on an official role, but he could just sit on the bench and talk to the players and coaches couldn’t he?

The Summer League is the PERFECT place to do this as a pathway to let players get into coaching. It’s numbskullery to not set this up as an official program for, say, one player per team per summer or whatever.

What are they actually going to do about it if he rocks up in street clothes and talks to the players on the bench?

Makes me curious how Bill Russell was a player coach back in the day…he would just yell for someone to sub out and call timeouts when he was tired ??

Kyle Lowry has been a player-coach on the Sixers for 3 years now and never had to cosplay as an official coach (except that one time with masking tape). There’s value to be had in making guys shift their mindset and place themselves in different frames of mind, but this just seemed like a weird way to do it.

Let’s assume this is coming from the coaches union. There has to be a middle ground where the coaches can make sure it doesn’t take opportunities from them (even the precedent) while also giving Keyonte a shot to develop.

Something like a player’s minute (come up with your own name). During the start of the 2nd quarter, for the first 1 minutes of the quarter, a player designated by each team gets to take hold of the play calling.

OR

At the start of the second half, an extra 2 minutes is put on the clock at which point, any scoring that happens during this time could optionally be ignored. During this time, each team is completely run by a single player on the team who calls the plays, gets 1 timeout, and when the 2 minutes is up, the real half starts. The real coaches take back over.

At that point you are setting a precendent of player coaches, limiting that precedent to a very short time that is less than a single coach would get opportunity for, and also giving a player a chance to see the game from a different perspective.

Of course we’re not having fun, this is the NBA
