His biggest problem on the offensive end has been his decision making, but if you’re running pick and rolls with Luka or Reaves as the ball handler then he really doesn’t need to make many decisions, just use his physicality to set screens and get to the rim. Sure, he has his weaknesses, but every player that LA could get at this point for their swap (while also getting off Vando) has weaknesses

The Lakers built this roster around Luka, Reaves, Walker Kessler and a bunch of tradable contracts. Vando’s contract is the only untradable, Zeke Nnaji type contract on the team( probably worse) and for the price of a first round swap they get a guy that is at worst a tradable contract to put with other contracts for a real future wing upgrade.

It’s not like Kuminga is a bad player either. He’ll have a clear defensive role and because of the pressure Luka and Reaves put on a defense, he’ll be able to attack closeouts consistently, even in a playoffs context.

Is there something that can be better out there than this deal? Maybe, if you’re thinking of aggregating trades for an upgrade in the future. But for the next 2 seasons, you’d be stuck with this useless Vando contract during the period Luka is only making a 30% max.

But this is definitely a big upgrade in flexibility and to a lesser extent, on-ball skill for the price of one swap. Maybe big enough to actually build a title contender around. Especially since the Lakers got way younger this offseason.

So Hawks want the 2032 swap, Lakers are holding their ground and only willing to offer seconds.

I guess we’ll see who blinks.

This move screams as an lolknicks move to me. As someone who has witnessed 20 years of bad moves, it seems the Lakers are intent on taking a page out of that playbook. Why would the Lakers trade away their best wing defender, who only has 2 years left on his contract, for multi-year Kuminga who is a worst defender than Vando and the definition of he either shows up or doesn’t. The fact that the Warriors and Hawks in the last year have given up on him says something.

Also trading a 1st pick swap just to do a sign and trade for Kuminga is an lolknick move

Kuminga is such a bad fit for the Lakers, they need a 3+D guy who can play off-ball and Kuminga is the complete opposite of that.

Should’ve kept Rui, at this point I don’t even know who they can get. And I liked the Kessler signing for the team, but they need a wing defender who can shoot the 3.
