[Windhorst] The Wizards when they traded for Trae Young promised him a max contract in exchange for sitting out the rest of the season so they could also tank for AJ Dybantsa
Shocking news
I wish life was this easy for me. Not show up to work and get a raise in the process
Have you ever considered becoming an nba all star?
Or a politician?
I’ve considered both
What made you decide against it
He’s still making his decision, this summer we have:
Lebron’s decision where he plays
Dae5oty’s decision to be an nba all star or politician
I’m sure he obviously would love to do either. I mean, hopefully it happens. But Dae5oty’s deserved the opportunity and the right to take his time with the decision.
Let’s not fall to bickering here, we’re all hoping for the best for Dae5oty - even if the decision is to do neither!
Windy has already reported that u/Dae5oty is leaning towards politics.
Why not pro golfer? All you do is walk around and swing a club a handful of times. The better you are, the less walking and swinging. Seems pretty easy.

I can get yall elected as your campaign manager. My annual rate is $60,000,000.
Yeah but like imagine what a piece of shit you’d have to be/become
Come on, Trae is not that bad.
New York has entered the chat
Or a Board Member?
Politicians do have to show up to vote for those raises to be fair.
Can I just go on TV and talk random shit about NBA all-stars instead?
Are you in the top 50 in the entire world at your job?
Somehow, I feel the top 50 plumbers, electricians, carpenters, barbers, teachers etc aren’t getting this sweet of a gig
The top 50 plumbers in the world own their own companies and have other people doing work for them while they rake on profit.
The owner of a drainage company in Toronto is worth over a hundred million. He’s a licensed plumber.
Sounds like you’ve described the top 50 guys who own a plumbing business lmao what is this fucking nonsense response
The best chef is the CEO of McDonalds after all
How do you know he’s any good a plumbing and not just a businessman with a plumbing lisence?
Just become the top .01% of people in your career. EZ PZ
Happened to a lot of people during Covid
“Daryl Morey is a liar and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of. Let me say that again: Daryl Morey is a liar and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of.”
Shocked Pikachu Face
Exactly 😂😂. This and A.D too.
Makes sense why he was so hyped on the bench lol
That isn’t against the rules somehow?
It is if its proven. But this is just “speculation” and there’s nothing in writing.
Yeah… I’m not gonna question the fact that Trae knew this was the intention in a general sense when we brought him in, but if Windy is going to lay out these very specific, very concrete allegations of an explicit “max for riding the bench” deal made behind closed doors, I’m gonna need to see receipts.
Concrete? Just saying things doesn’t make something concrete
The allegations themselves are what is concrete. Not the facts they alledge. If he’s gonna make accusations like this he should have evidence or shut up
windhorst just says stuff. he states his speculation and assumptions the same way he states facts. see: when he said giannis requested a trade to the knicks last off season and then walked it back two days later.
Like this trae thing could definitely be true but he’s not reporting, he’s just talking
I find it amusing that in the clip he says: “Because if [Young] had played, they might have won a bunch more games.”
Young actually played 5 games for us, and we lost all 5.
Windy is always just yapping.
Knowing these types of receipts are impossible for him to provide, I would still lean heavily towards Windhorst’ story here. Not only is this what we all suspect, I would expect someone like Windhorst to have more information on it than he would be able to openly share. For example, and I’m just speculating here, if he knows those other max offers for Trae were not real.
Oh definitely, but public opinion isn’t enough for the league to punish and upset one of their owners
Long form reporting with interviews, sources, and evidence is not enough either apparently
Young even played a few games and got injured in one of the games so it made sense to sit him at that point. But yeah the Trae Young trade helped lower the Wizards win total because they gave up CJ McCollum in the trade.
Depends how retroactive Solver wants to get. The Jazz go fined $500k despite not technically breaking any rules, just for “conduct detrimental to the league”.
I don’t see how this couldn’t fall under the same thing if he wanted it to.
Edit: brain fart on the $
500K bro not M lol
\(500M? More like \)500k
the jazz caused lottery reform lol- they weren’t the only team, but the unwritten rule was always either sit guys or play them- don’t sit them just in the fourth quarter in the middle of the season. that’s offensively obvious lol.
PABLOOOOOO!!!!!!
I’m saying lol isn’t this like against the load management bullshit that we’ve been battling for like 10 years now Adam?
It’s worse than load management. Very close to throwing games.
Literally avoiding a strat that wins games to achieve a goal of losing games.
Yep. This is extremely unethical.
Wizards and Jazz were the worst offenders last year imo and they ended up with the top 2 picks. It makes me feel bad for teams that were actually just bad like the Nets and Kings. Luckily, this draft was stacked and I think they both got a great player
Kings and Nets are definitely the biggest losers here. Wizards and Jazz really got rewarded with Dybansta and DP in a loaded draft class to complete their respective rebuilds after some of the most egregious unethical tank seasons ever, so shameless the league finally banned tanking so now future actual bad teams are screwed building in the draft smh
I’m very excited about MBJ and I’m sure the Kings are too about Acuff but that lottery day I got banned on reddit for 3 days for the shit I was saying about Adam Silver. Nets tanked too ofc so did the Kings. Kings even won pointless games end of the season. Pacers lost the 1st they bet. They tanked heavy too. But doing everything you can for the best odds just to get knocked out of the top 5 like the Nets is absolutely fucking painful.
Am I understanding correctly that people are insinuating Trae Young wins games?
Damn and you’re a Hawks fan? He that bad?
I’m a Hawks fan, and he’s not that bad. But before this story, no one talked about Trae as someone who would win games
the wizards would have certainly won more than 17 games if Trae was playing after he got traded
No you don’t understand, it’s not throwing games, it’s “tanking”.
It’s been a year and we haven’t gotten a resolution to aspiration and you think he’s gonna step in to a random claim?
He fined Utah 500k while citing a game that Utah literally won in the same fucking breath, so who the fuck knows.
Only if you’re Sam Hinkie and one of the Silvers friends wants a GM job for his son.
extremely. in multiple ways. but would be hard to prove unless they wrote it down on a napkin
Every time I’m reminded of this I laugh
same (not actually, I cry)
It probably is, but they know that they it’s going to be at the discretion of the commissioner and we know how much of a pussy Silver is. Look at the Clippers and this aspiration
It’s not really Silver being a pussy. He just represents the interests of the owners as a collective. He doesn’t have any real power over them. If no action is taken, that tells you the rest of the owners are generally okay with what went down. Has nothing to do with whether or not Silver is a pussy.
Better fine the Pacers and Jazz again just to be sure
This is fine, he wasn’t a free agent. But if they promised him the contract, had him sit out and tank his value and then not pay him. That would have been would be an issue
It is explicitly against the PPP lmao. You can’t sit stars for picks (I mean you can because this league is a joke, but you aren’t supposed to be able to).
Holding out a healthy enough player to lose games is what got other teams fined.
This isn’t about the Trae Young contract agreement but about the sitting healthy players to actively lose games
Fine the Pacers!
It woukd be if proven true but this is tech speculation without anything documented
If it isn’t it will be shortly
I think so but the Wizards and Trae Young will never admit to it.
Different spin: “The Wizards traded for Trae Young and promised him that taking extra time to get 100% healthy would not affect his upcoming contract. The wizards speculated they would be more competitive next season post draft + a fully healthy Trae Young”
So if Trae Young refused to sit out they wouldn’t give him the max?
If he refused, they wouldn’t have traded for him.
It’s as simple as a player saying “I want to play and the team won’t let me” for the NBA to launch an investigation. It just happened like 5 months ago.
But why snitch and fuck up the bag?
I really wish my employer would bump my salary to the max of the band, max out my bonus, and ask me not to come to work for a year…
You don’t even have to pay me generational wealth to not work and get paid anyway.
He still has to practice probably no? It’s like his sitting his ass on the couch all year
I’ll show up for all of the meetings, do my CE, and take all my compliance courses. No worries.
Problem is your employer doesn’t get the chance to “draft” the next super employee if they have a bad year
I’m not saying he shouuld.
Just that the comment I replied to made no sense time-wise.
He could agree and then still refuse later.
He could but no reason to do it
He joined the wizards for a bag. he got his bag.
They would put him out with bunch of Bez Mbengas of the world and wish him good luck getting max deals in UFA
I think the more believable story is that they told him not to rush back from an injury to prove himself because they were ready to give him the contract.
Nothing will come of this but in a just NBA, if this were actually proved, promising a player a max in exchange for sitting out while healthy should be grounds for stripping the team of their pick.
Paying players outside of the salary cap isn’t grounds for losing a pick I am not sure what is honestly
If you don’t look at the mountains of evidence there was no evidence of wrongdoing
It’s unfortunate because the NBA is basically setting a precedent that teams can circumvent rules without any backlash.
When the league is essentially sweeping something as bad as Aspiration scandal under the rug, things like intentionally sitting players in this manner that is far less egregious rule circumvention is just not even gonna cross their mind as an issue.
Ironically, Sam Hinkie got punished when doing so himself, at this point the league is just not even consistent anymore in how they treat these things historically. Though now I’m inclined to believe they’ll just let most things go given how they’re treating the Aspiration scandal.
I think it comes in waves I imagine any “tanking” next season will be punished heavily compared to previous years. But something like aspiration I wonder if the fact they didn’t win anything and were a little bit of a joke, then traded Kawhi maybe that’s why they haven’t punished at all.
Plausible, but such a dumb way for a league to operate. You’re gonna let it slide until a team is actually good from cheating and then choose to enforce? Like the sign-stealing stuff with the Astros?
Yeah I mean, definitely could just be they want to push it under the rug because balmer is the richest owner in the sport
This is a great point, like it or not they would definitely be getting the shaft if they made a playoff run after they turned around the season. What is interesting in this light is that they ended up with the 5th overall pick. Not sure how to reconcile that with the theory lol
Hinkie got punished for saying the quiet part out loud. Silver wouldn’t have cared if Hinkie didn’t say he was intentionally trying to maximize his chances at getting a top player by being bad.
Hey! That investigation is still on-going buddy! And it has only taken so long that the player being investigated is on another team! You could punish the player with a suspension and reward the violating team if you’d like though by improving their picks!
Can’t promise future contracts ala Joe Smith
The Spurs promised Fox a max contract too when they traded for him and Philly probably did something similar to Jaylen Brown that’s pretty normal for big trades
I feel the issue here would be using the max to bribe him to fake an injury and sit out so they could still tank for AJ
It wasn’t a fake injury, it was just one he could have (and did on very limited minutes) played on. We traded for him and expressed we wanted him long term, the rest is spectaculation. Reasonable speculation, but still not proven anywhere.
Why would the hawks help him fake an injury?
That was when they signed him as an FA.
That is not what happened with Joe Smith lol
And, to be completely fair to the rest of the league, the player selected with the forfeited pick should be granted to the team closest to the player’s hometown.
You guys would end up trading him for Jimmy butler and 2 frp so what’s the point?
This not really in exchange for the contract tho. They just wanted him to sit and not worry about his next contract. Even if he played they obviously wanted him enough to give it to him
Don’t you have to say allegedly here?
Windy plays by his own rules☝️🤔☝️
CJK5H
Allegedly
Feels like he should considering the Wizards had no ability to predict the future, like how would they know AJ would be theirs in the first place?? Or maybe they really are wizards….
Windy may read this, please delete this bro
Why would they need to know AJ would be there?
They didn’t need to predict anything. They just wanted to lose as many games as possible to have the beat possible odds for a high draft pick.
Yeah, and I really doubt the credibility here on the other end.
Wizards don’t have incentives to spill this
Young’s side doesn’t have incentives to spill this as it risks the bag.
From a journalistic standpoint, absolutely.
If he’s reporting infomation from someone with direct knowledge of what happened, no he doesn’t need to say it allegedly happened.
Didn’t have to convince AD not to play
For all we know a similar promise was made and his max is coming . He wasn’t out for the season when they traded for him .
it’s AD tho he would’ve only played like 5 games
Seems like that should be a violation of league rules, but I guess in a league where the richest owner can pay a player $50M under the table and nothing happens, we shouldn’t expect much in terms of enforcement
I mean this is just someone talking. This isn’t reporting for shit
I too would be willing to not show up to work for the rest of the year if my employer promised me $200m in exchange.
Such a funny and ridiculous thing when you put like that
dude got paid to not work lol
This is the exact same scenario when Morey traded for James Harden from Brooklyn then had James decline his player option, with the gentlemen’s agreement that he would get a max extension the following year, only for Morey to renege on it.
But the Wizards actually kept to their word
Exactly. People are acting shocked like it’s some new scandal, but it’s common and just not usually blown up by a reporter. Happens all the time with sign and trades, or waiving someone before free agency to sign someone you have a hunch will choose you.
Those hand shake deals are almost always kept. Trae’s agent also reps Josh Hart, Jalen Brunson, Isaiah Hartenstein, Reed Sheppard, Walker Kessler and a whole bunch other names. NBA GMs tread very carefully with CAA. There’s not that many real agent out there, they know how to make and enforce these deals.
Harden got fucked because he didn’t have a real agent. Even then Darryl Morrey got canned from the bad rep with fucking up that deal.
Bro looks like a Lindt Lindor truffle in that shirt
Yooo this is one of the funniest comments of all time lmaooo
This is good stuff.
I can’t stop laughing
if we get punished for this but the clippers and kawhi can get away scott free I am storming nba hq
plus he was genuinely injured and did play a few games
Got paid not to do his job, then secured another 200m on top of it.
glad the wizards are done tanking because this is gonna cost you a draft pick or two
Lol not a thing is gonna happen this is speculation lmao
It wont, but have fun with your ja dame and deni experiment should be fun.
Their draft pick is still gonna be pretty high lol
Only reason it will be high is because of the changed lottery odds. They’re a play-in team at worst
Do we know what at worst means and do we know there’s 15 teams in the east, and 10 make the play in?
He said what he said 😤
Don’t be surprised if it’s an even series between our teams next year man
Also, lmao. RemindMe! 6 months
Giving Trae a max is a dumb enough punishment to themselves to some degree.
Still worked tho. So I’m sure they don’t mind
Yeah but Trae Young literally did play and then he got injured. Windhorst just be yappin sometimes.
You honestly don’t think Trae could have played ?
The real question that concerns the league:
What affect did this have on gambling? We need think about what matters
Water is also wet bro
Can’t say I believe anything windy has to say.
“I’m being told a team that was already tanking wanted to tank more to get a top pick”
God I picked the wrong profession
Meanwhile, Adam Silver fined the Pacers and gave their pick to Aspiration^(The Clippers)
There’s something wrong with a sport if teams are incentivized to tell their good players to not play so they can lose more. It’s just not normal if you follow other sports.
Tanking will always be a thing even with the new rules
I’ll never believe anything this jackass says. He could tell me the sky was blue and I’d bet on it being black
I know this isn’t really a surprise, but is this kind of thing worse for integrity of competition than Kawhi’s contract?
If you’re talking about circumventing the cap via aspiration, thats way worse than this
No, this fucks over other teams trying to lose. The Aspiration thing fucks over teams trying to win.
This league is cooked
these “journalists” just be saying whatever
Take their drafts pick away.
Start with the clippers first
Fine the Jazz and Pacers again, that makes sense
I wish i can sit out from my job for a year and get paid hundreds of millions. 😭😭
Quiet part out loud
This is 100% a violation of both the CBA and the player participation policy.
From the CBA:
Section 2. No Unauthorized Agreements. (a) At no time shall there be any agreements or transactions of any kind (whether disclosed or undisclosed to the NBA), express or implied, oral or written, or promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind (whether disclosed or undisclosed to the NBA), between a player (or any person or entity controlled by, related to, or acting with authority on behalf of, such player) and any Team (or Team Affiliate): > (i) concerning any future Renegotiation, Extension, or other amendment of an existing Player Contract, or entry into a new Player Contract
Section 2. No Unauthorized Agreements.

It would be very hard to prove and I seriously doubt it played out that way
Teams that are caught doing this need to have their next 5 FRPs taken from them.
This is Adam SIlver as commissioner we are talking about now. They’ll get like a $5 fine.
So is Trae a winning basketball player or losing one?
Watch Adam Silver punish the Wizards while the Clippers get off clean
Someone get Pablo Torre on the case!
It doesn’t even matter.
The Clippers/Kawhi stuff is some of the best reporting I’ve seen from a sports journalist and yet the NBA is sitting on their hands. Neither Kawhi, nor the Clippers are gonna get punished for it.
Mind you Silver rigged the draft lottery so the Pacers wouldn’t get their pick when Haliburton was actually injured.
Because Trae sitting moved our chances of winning the lottery from 14% to 100%, right? Pure fantasy from Windhorst
The Jazz did the same thing with Nurkic, JJJ and Walker last year. Hell basically been doing it with Markkanen for four years.
Isn’t the league forced to start a tanking investigation at this point? Given these statements?
No their city is a little too far south for Adam Silver to care
eh i don’t trust windy so don’t really believe this. i’m sure they promised him a max contract but not for sitting out the rest of the season
I mean it worked
They can openly talk about this because we know nothing will happen. Looks at the LA Clippers
Trae young had a 0-5 record with the wizards (and 2-8 with the hawks).
The Wizards thinking playing him would win them games was their first mistake
It has been common for top players to “Shut it down” once a team is out of the hunt. Every NBA player has some kind of nagging injury that’s not worth aggravation in meaningless games. And on the flip side CJ Mcollum escaped meaninglessness and got a real opportunity to shine again.
Darryn Peterson
The fact that this isn’t against the rules is a massive indictment on the league
Wouldn’t the league launch an investigation cause of this?
Feels like something worthy of an investigation
Fucking disgusting I don’t care how out of whack the draft gets I don’t want to see tanking like that ever again
This guy can’t afford AirPods?
Probably true. But we just taking his word for it? Lol they also had to win the lottery. It’s not like nobody knew they were tanking already…
They weren’t going to win with him either. Might as well let him get healthy
Man they been wandering around the desert for 30 yrs ill allow it
Adam Silver’s NBA
He takes half the year off every year. Thats a no defense dig.
Welcome to the modern NBA
And they kept their word?? Daryl Morey could never.
So a team literally bribed a player to change the outcomes of games?
