As a result of the Golden State Warriors not matching the Memphis Grizzlies’ offer sheet, Quentin Post is the first NBA player since 2020 to change teams as the result of an offer sheet.
In case you were wondering who was the predecessor: In 2020, Sacramento Kings’ Serbian Bogdan Bogdanović was in a very strange situation. The Kings were trying to trade him to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a sign and trade which would have netted them, among other players, Donte DiVincenzo, but the NBA discovered that the Bucks had been in contact with Bogdanović and his agent prior to the moratorium period on free agency. As a result, the trade was rescinded and the Bucks lost a 2022 second round pick.
An aside but this whole affair is part of the reason why teams can now negotiate with their own players in advance of free agency even if the deals agreed to cannot be signed until the moratorium on free agency has been lifted. As far as the player involved in it, Bogdan would sign a $72M/4 years offer sheet with the Atlanta Hawks after that tampering kerfuffle on November 24th. Sacramento would not match the offer and so the Hawks got one of the key players to their Cinderella run in 2021. Amusingly, this didn’t dissuade the Kings from trading with the Hawks a few seasons later in a sign and trade for Kevin Huerter but that’s a story for another time. TL;DR - This trade would eventually land Atlanta the 8th pick in this year’s draft.
