The Nuggets are where the Bucks were a few years ago (before the trade for Dame). If Denver plays their cards perfectly and everyone stays healthy it could still work out.

That said, those things won’t happen. The Bucks even had the benefit of ownership that was willing to pay a bit to keep the team in position to go on another run, but it didn’t work out.

The Nuggets ownership has never shown a willingness to pay, which is why they’ve moved soooo many picks the last 5 years to manage their salaries.

For Nuggets fans I hope I’m wrong, but I think it’s already over for the Nuggets being a title contender - they just don’t know it yet.

They have zero tradeable FRP and 3* second round picks to facilitate a trade. That’s not much for another team taking on Johnson.

Parity basketball, even the teams like the Spurs and Thunder are going to run into issues eventually, sure they have back fill with picks, but once the rookie deals run out, they won’t be able to sign them, and the talent is then dispersed around the league. As a Wolves fan they were one of the first teams to get fucked by the 2nd apron when we lost KAT, and everyone clowned us for it. I’m petty so I’m glad the rest of the league is or will be fucked soon so I too can laugh along with everyone at things like the Brown trade. That said dynasty basketball is overrated, and I like not knowing who is going to win at the beginning of every season.

For what it’s worth, the luxury tax and the repeater tax existed before this CBA (though the repeater tax has gotten worse), and the Nuggets have never spent over the equivalent of the second apron, even before it existed.

Not really. It’s just that there is an adjustment period. Teams have gotten used to having greater flexibility. Now they are learning that it’s harder to mitigate bad decisions by simply spending more.

IMHO the real issue is the super-max contract. It’s supposed to help teams keep the talent they drafted, but it is having somewhat the opposite effect.

It’s good unless you have a ton of money tied up in players who aren’t superstars which is a problem the Nuggets have had for years. After they won the title they overpaid all their non-Jokic players and they are still feeling the negative effects of that today.

Eh. The East is wide open now that all the superteams have been broken apart by it, and the West will follow suit in a few years.

Overall, I think it’s good for basketball to eventually have most of the league in legitimate championship contention instead of having half the league starting the worst rosters of all time in an active attempt to lose games and tank.

They would probably do a sign and trade, but they can match no problem. Kroenke’s are stupidly rich.

In order to trade away a player at the deadline, you have to have a team with cap space or an exemption large enough for some of your players. But the new league rules is that all teams must have like 90% of the salary cap already signed by the time the season starts.

Once you go over the second apron you’re handcuffed in the types of trades you can make. It would be near impossible to offload salary and get back under the second apron mid-season. Basically every trade you make needs to be a 1 for 1 player or directly into straight empty cap space.

You’d have to gut the roster to get under the tax, at best you can slide under the 2nd apron.

They didn’t draft Bruce Brown, KCP, or AG that’s like half of their first 6 during that run.
