It’s crazy to think that in 1986, a sophomore Michael Jordan (who had been injured pretty much the whole year), averaged 44 points in a 3-game losing sweep to Larry Bird and the Celtics.
The Bulls won just 30 games in a season 22 y/o MJ played just 18 regular games. A broken left foot kept him out. Many doctors even said “he would never be the same.” I guess how my dad explains it, is even though he got swept, he cemented himself as a star and someone who needed a real team around him. I just can’t believe he lost all 3 games. Larry and Boston were just that nice. Was a young Jordan lacking anything in specific or was it playing the best one man basketball of all time just wasn’t enough to beat such a godly team. Like the Logo, Jerry West (who pops says is the greatest player to ever walk the earth, lol).
The Legend of course said of Jordan after beating him in the ‘86 playoffs upon Mike’s early return:
“That wasn’t Michael Jordan out there. That was God disguised as Michael Jordan.” He had just scored 63 points, the all time playoff record, away, losing. Holds the record to this day for most points in a playoff game.
