The craziest part is still just the Bulls being a playoff team with 30 wins. This was just the 3rd year with a 16 team playoff, and the league still only had 23 teams. So 8 out of the 11 teams in the east made it. People would be going crazy about that now. It happened a couple of years later too with the 31 win Spurs. Then the league finally started expanding so the playoff format made a bit more sense.

Even with the play-in, a 30 win team making it would still be crazy. But imagine if the Bulls somehow were a top 8 team in the east this past season with their record.

Dude the Bulls added Kukoc and Kerr in the 1993 offseason. They also didn’t play nearly as well in the 1994-95 season until MJ returned.

Pippen had a total of 5 30+ point playoff games as a Bull. Only 1 the season MJ was out. And none the second threepeat. MJ had 109 30+ point games.

Larry Bird, who I love, managed to win a finals where he scored 8, 8, and 12 points in 3 straight finals games. His team won 2 of those games.

Maxwell was Bird’s savior more than Pippen was ever MJ’s.

To me the biggest difference between the two is that MJ did what was needed in real time. He would give the team more of something when it was the right moment. LeBron tries to throw the kitchen sink at the problem, and that doesn’t always work. MJs feel for the game and control of that is probably what separates him from most of the other greats.

Its not a matter of simple assist counting - Kobe was the main ball handler in the triangle his entire career with Phil Jackson and the way the triangle offense is ran especially in the deadball era deflated assist numbers. Kobe’s actual turnover percentage was always pretty strong, also. But Phil Jackson specifically gave MJ less of a role as a ball handler because of deficiencies in his fundamental passing skill/instinct while encouraging Kobe to embrace it because he had a better acumen for it. And even when you watch both of them play, Kobe just straight up made better reads and inventive passes most of the time

And I would never compare him to anyone else because he had absolutely unique role in the league and was heavily used as the main marketing material to make the NBA and Jordan the most recognizable sport entities in the world. I think Jordan was really lucky that he had a chance to face those great Celtics, Pistons and Lakers teams early in his career. He played as well as an individual could possibly play and it didn’t matter in the end. Those years made Jordan what he would become. He learned from those teams what it takes and adjusted his game accordingly. Bird and Magic were held on such a high tier publicly because they were entertaining but also because they were winners. Jordan was always going to be a star but to reach that level of respect he HAD to win. He would’ve been considered a failure if he didn’t.

The 1988-89 Bulls with Doug Collins made the eastern conference finals and took the Pistons to 6 games. The Pistons lost ZERO GAMES in their other 3 playoff series on their way to winning the championship that year. The Bulls didn’t lose to the Pistons because Jordan didn’t know how to play as a team, they lost because the rest of their team was simply way less talented than the Pistons

Then in 1989-90 with Phil Jackson the Bulls would once again meet the Pistons in the Eastern conference finals and lose in 7 games. In the 7th game of the series the Bulls non-Jordan starters shot ¹⁰⁄₄₉ for 26 points. The bench also shot ⁵⁄₁₄. Jordan was the only guy who showed up, but it didn’t matter.

Jordan was the best player in the world. His teammates sucked. Put Jordan on the Lakers or Celtics in place of Magic or Bird and he would have won championships way earlier in his career.

The way I see it, Michael basically had to beat 3 generations worth of greats to do what he did.

He had to first beat the Showtime Lakers/80s Celtics/Bad Boy Pistons. Then he went on to basically crush Ewing Knicks, Charles’ Barkley’s 6ers/Suns and Drexler’s Blazer who all could have had a chance at a chip were it not for him. Then post Baseball he basically took Stockton/Malone’s souls twice AND dismantled the Orlando Shaq/Hardaway duo before finally retirng.

Soon as he retires, the Duncan Spurs/Shaq+Kobe Lakers started dominating. LeBron was my favorite player for many years. They’re both 1 of 1. But there’s no denying Jordan was better in his losses than LeBron was. Mike really never choked a playoff series (expect maybe 87). As great as he was in so many series, Bron has multiple times.

At the same time it’s also a testament to the Bulls as a team. Jordan shot just 39% in the 1997 ECF against a young and strong Heat and Chicago still won in 5. That was his only playoff series he shot under 40%. LeBron has shot under 40% four times.
