I will continue to shout from the mountaintops that the no-brainer solution is to have the cap hit for homegrown players not count the extra money between the regular among any other team would be able to pay them and the higher salary the team that drafted them can pay.

Benefits the player (higher salary), benefits the team (allows for them to keep homegrown talent at the same cap hit any other team would have paying them), literally no one loses

The NBA is more afraid of another KD to the warriors scenario than it is of homegrown talent being moved frequently.

It worked tho. The goal of the super max was for small markets to be able to retain their stars. That has overwhelmingly worked imo.

Its not a contradiction. Nobody has to give them the contracts if they don’t deserve it. The problem is people using tools and options when they shouldn’t.

They did not have to give Brown a 35% max for earning 2nd team all-NBA back in 2023. Presumably if they thought he was worth that contract, they wouldn’t have traded him for a guy who makes roughly the same amount.

Brown didn’t deserve that supermax that’s the problem, If it was after the finale then yeah but they gave him that contract in 2023 like that was poor decision making because no one in the league was paying brown that money, Only Tatum was worth that shit because he was a multi time all NBA first team

Not really the same thing. The reason Harden was traded was simply cheap ownership. Under the old CBA, teams could spend as much as they wanted, they just had a hell of a tax bill. Doesn’t bother the clippers or the Cavs. But smaller ownership teams didn’t like looking cheap and got the player union to agree to the new CBA. Now teams can’t spend crazy. When it passed the first thought in my head was, there is going to be less than 10 players that should be on the max. If you pay the max to a player that isn’t a top ⁷⁄₈ player. You screwed up your cap and roster building. Players will and should fight for every dollar. But if your team is paying a PG, Melo, Brown, etc as a max. You are a playoff team at best and not truly a contender.

You ignore the usage part, George is happy to sit in corners and not take 20+ shots, Brown’s entire shtick this season was im a great first option and was even posting stories look at our record it’s the same with me as first option taking those shots

This is clear as day about the Celtics not wanting to extend Brown at a max level salary. Taking on much shorter term money should have made that very obvious.

For a year then he’s an expiring. Jaylen would have demanded a massive extension to overpay him for 5-6 years instead of 3. Even if PG can’t be moved, he’s gone in 2 years max.

You’re also asking if you want that money completely off the books in two years so you can look at a proper retool/rebuild around the max player you believe in, or needing to hold onto a player for that same time frame who is losing trade value the closer his contract gets to expiring, and who the league and analysts apparently hate. So, yes, it makes some sense

He spoke directly about that in the conference, saying he would have been much happier if a team out West had made the same offer, but that you have to think about your own team first and he wasn’t going to accept a worse offer just because we play Philly 6 times (including preseason)

It seams like they’re really wasn’t a big market for JB after all. Brad even mentioned that some of the teams publicized as being interested didn’t even call them.

I’d imagine cause it was slim pickings for who could match. JB’s contract as the number two in Boston is still what most teams main guy gets. And most teams aren’t interested in trading their main guy. Which means you’re looking at a roster gutting and that defeats the purpose of the trade at all. Philly happened to have a big ass contract on hand that they could get off easily and because it’s basically an expiring it saves Boston a little money

What is the point of cap space flexibility?  Most teams just use their cap space to sign non-playoff rotation guys like Luke Kennard to $6.5M a year. The Celtics were already pegged to be contenders with Tatum and Brown and now it’s probable they might win less games this year when you factor in Tatum’s leg issues. 

PG is going to opt in because no one is giving him 57m at 37.

He acknowledged that but pointed to the FRPs and PG’s player option for next season. I don’t think it’s that hard of a concept to understand.

One less year and not due an extension, he also is just a better fit as a player for what the Celtics likely want to do. They want Tatum running the offense, Brown needs the ball in his hands.
