Looking back at it, the Raptors should be happy LeBronto happened. Otherwise, DeRozan takes them the ECF and Finals for 3-4 years straight from 2015-2019, but they wouldn’t be good enough to beat the Warriors in the Finals. The Raptors never trade DeRozan for Kawhi if he kept taking them to the ECF and Finals instead of getting swept in the 2nd round.
To be honest no matter what success they would have had with DeMar you trade him for Kawhi 10 out of 10 times. DeMar is one of my fave all-time players but Kawhi is a tier 1 superstar. Only time I could see them not trading DeMar is if we won multiple titles with him. ECF and Finals appearances still means there’s a hill to get over.

He had structured most of the contracts to end about ~2021 or 2022 (i don’t recall which year). Which means he was trading away 2-3 years of DeMar for 1 year of Kawhi. If they were good enough to win once, there’s no reason to think they couldn’t win a second. You’re not trading a guy, who was not only loyal but effective for a 1 year rental. Because you already know you could win with Demar.
