That 1974 season Smith went on a tear early on in the season. He had six triple-double games with 10+ blocks, plus a game with 17 blocks, which is still the record. For that 17 block game his stat line was an instane 12/16/17 - more blocks than rebounds, lol!

Yeah, you could see how other elite shot blockers’ blocks change from their peak to their final season:

Mark Eaton averaged 1.2bpg compared to his highest season of 5.6

Hakeem - 1.5 compared to 4.6

Mutombo - 1.2 compared to 4.5

If wilt was 5.4 in his 14th season, it’s not a stretch to say that he would have averaged 11-13bpg at his peak. In fact the most credible source of a 112 random tracked games across his career shows he averaged 8.8bpg in that span of games. Insane

Admiral had the peak numbers for sure, especially 92 at 6.8 stocks. But Hakeem did 6+ stocks 5 times over 4 straight years - that consistency at center is the separator. Robinson never cracked 5 stocks after 92.

Only other people I’ve seen with a motor like his were Bobcats Gerald Wallace, Ben Wallace & Dennis Rodman. Pretty much the wing version of Wemby. He just couldn’t stay healthy to save his life.

The craziest part is Hakeem did this while being the primary offensive option year after year. Most guys who put up those defensive numbers were basically just rim protectors on offense. Dream was dropping 24-26 a night while still getting 4+ blocks and 2+ steals. That 1990 season especially… 24.3/14/2.⁹⁄₄.⁶⁄₂.1 is video game stuff.

I watched 90s basketball and the talent was so far behind our average talent today. MJ and Pippen averaged nearly 6 SPG on the same team. Do you think it’s a surprise there’s barely a handful of players averaging over 2 SPG?

Teams averaged 690, 673, 613, 598, 626, 620 (prorated to 82 games), 623 (same), 626, 633, and 632 the last decade. In the 90s, that was 699, 704, 709, 701, 728, 679, 654, 672, 688, and 685 (prorated to 82 games). In the 80s, those numbers were 772, 738, 700, 729, 697, 701, 721, 707, 698, and 745.

Steals were definitely higher back then generally, although this season had numbers that were fairly in line with how the 80s and 90s went.

I think one of the biggest differences is actually minutes. When MJ and Pippen combined for “nearly 6 SPG” (I think their highest combined season was ‘89/‘90, when they had 5.4 combined), they averaged 5.0 combined steals per-36 minutes. Looking at top steals team last year (the Rockets) their top two guys (Ausar and Javonte) averaged 5.3 steals per-36 minutes…they just played very few minutes compared to MJ and Pippen. But this was made up for by the Rockets having another two regular contributors (Reed and Holland) also being over 2 steals per-36.

Long story short, I don’t think your assumption here is very correct. Steals are down a bit, but not to the degree that one single player like Wemby would go from 1 steal a game to 2.5: 1.5 more steals per-game would be 143 total steals in a season, and there were zero seasons in the 80s or 90s that saw teams average 143 more steals than they did last year. And even if they were, you’d be assuming that EVERY extra steal would go to Wemby, when he was 3rd on his own team in steals per-game. That’s kind of an insane theory that the numbers just do not back up.

The minutes were a big reason but the late 80s and early 90s teams averaged 16 TO per game, the last 10 years has been ~13.5 TO. These stats in the OP were nearly all 80s and early 90s.

The reasons for higher TO were obvious. Without spacing, the paint was clogged and driving it had a much higher rate of turning it over. Players basically needed to get to the paint or within 15 feet. Coaches weren’t letting players take 14 long range shots a game lol

All this being said. I’m triple downing on Wemby averaging 2.5 SPG. There’s a reason guards frequently average 1.5+ steals per game and C’s now rarely average near the top of the league - 3 point shooting.

You’re gonna tell me if players were forced to drive on Wemby far more, they aren’t panic kicking it out and turning it over far more? Also, I think he’d average 5+ bpg with ease . Mfer is averaging 4 blocks while analytics are specifically telling players not to drive it on him and to take 3s away from him…… What do you think is happening without analytics?

I mean, I already listed the steal totals for the average team through the last decade and the 80s/90s. It was higher then, but never more than one steal per game higher than it was last year (and most times it was within 0.25 steals per-game, and sometimes it was that many steals less).

I’m just saying that as a whole steals were not that much more frequent back then. Certainly part of the reason (for the 90s) was how slow the pace was, although the pace in the 80s definitely was pretty close to what it is these days.

I’m just saying I don’t see any statistical evidence to indicate that somehow steals were so much more common back then that Wemby would jump up that high. Hell, young KG in the late 90s averaged averaged about 1.5 steals per-36 minutes. Old ass KG in the mid-2010s averaged…about the same, despite being significantly less athletic. I don’t think this is an aspect where numbers would change nearly as much as you think they would with an era swap, and we have guys who crossed eras that reinforce that (old ass Duncan averaged more steals per-minute than young Duncan; old Shaq went down a bit, but that dude was faaaaaaat by the end, and it was before the biiiiig 3pt boom so maybe not a good example).
