[Highlights] Tarris Reed Jr. full highlights vs. Miami Heat (88-87 L) in the California Classic Summer League:
10 Points on 3⁄10 FG, 0/1 from 3, 3⁄3 FT, 7 Rebounds (3 Off. Rebs), 1 Block, 1 turnover, 1 PF, and a +/- of -7 in 27:07 minutes played.
Certainly can’t question his size. Feels like a guy who is going to spend the next dozen years in the league being a solid role player big.
It’s obviously way to early to tell but he’s showing promise defensively, maybe he could develop into a decent player on that end and come off the bench in the future. Anyways it’s dumb to be high on bully ball prospects that can’t shoot, that player archetype is fading quickly. These players mostly rely on intensity and effort and thus make it work in the RS when not everyone can match it. Come playoff time when everyone plays with that same intensity they get exposed badly when teams can easily game plan against them on an individual level. Randle, Duren, Keldon Johnson are just a few players like this.
Reed first off is 6’11 in shoes and 250 pounds with a 7’4 wingspan. Hes not an undersized guy like most of the players you listed. He’s also a skilled post scorer even if the shots didn’t fall this game
I would argue tho if you’re a 6’11 265 center w elite rebounding it’s a bit different. like that’s the exact archetype of player that’s supposed to bully in the paint. his role will largely just be backup rim protector and rebounder as a 3rd center (if he cracks rotation in his rookie year). he’s noticeably larger than randle and keldon and is bigger than duren
We need someone to survive the non-Wemby minutes since Kornet seems useless in playoff spurts and Reed can provide that plus a different look if going dual bigs. I don’t hate it as a late 1st rounder.
Looks like he could be better than Luke “bad hands” Kornet…
Bully ball prospect that cant shoot?
He just got picked #1 overall.
I agree on the archetype, but the NBA hasnt yet.
hes gonna be a demon
looks like a reliable lower end starting center or very good backup. nothing special but also no massive weaknesses for what you want from him
I’m a UConn fan and his improvement from year to year, and then even over the course of his senior year was stunning. Totally embraced all the little things — sets massive screens, boxes out, can toggle between drop & hedge and recover. Way more versatile and effective because of that than I expected.
Add in his ability to facilitate the offense from the top of the key (he’s a very good passer, which combined with his excellent screening makes him super effective as a hub) and his touch around the rim, and I’m just very surprised he didn’t go earlier. He’s gonna crush for the Spurs.
Bust
(Yes, I’m biased)
I think the most likely outcome for Reed is as a quality backup Center in the NBA for a long time. It still makes no sense to me that he Knicks chose to trade out of their pick instead of taking him.
