NCAA NIL is slowly destroying European Youth Basketball and the NBA will suffer from it
Sorry if this is not the approbiate subreddit but I thought it would be worth discussing here.
To start: Dont get me wrong, NIL is a very good thing for the players who finally get paid and deservedly so. but this has inadvertent consequences for european basketball. Im just pointing out what in my opionion the cause and effect of this will be, I’m not saying NIL is bad.
TLDR: Becuase of NIL money, there is a massive talent drain from Europe to NCAA right now and clubs that develop their own talents dont get any benefit from it, so eventually they will stop investing in their youth academies which will lead to way lower level of european talent.
Youth development in Europe is done fundamentally different than in the US. In the US you have schools that do youth sports. In Europe, there is no school sports, kids sign up for sport clubs and play in their youth team.
Each professional team has their own youth academy where they develop their talent. Its like if the Lakers had a u7-u19 team
These clubs spend millions into:
- Scouting the best kids in their country
- Recruiting the most talented kids in their country and sometimes even outside
- Professional coaches, facility and the best possible youth development program and strategy
In Europe kids are coached by professional coaches in professional clubs and not by some random dads in middle school etc. This kind of infrastructure costs a lot of money
So why do teams invest this money? Because if you develop good talent it pays out in the end by
A) the kids turning into senior players for your senior team
B) Selling them for high buyout clauses once they turn professional
Now this whole logic and infrastructure falls apart. Why?
Take the newest example: The biggest talent in Europe right now, Nikola Kusturica, is going to UCLA for 2 years and will earn 12 million!! doing so. Thats even more money than the highest Euroleague salary.
Nikola Kusturica is 17. So at 17 he will earn more money in College than the best professional player in Europe right now. So why would any european prospect stay in Europe if they are good enough for College? And he is not alone, his former U22 team from Barcelona from last year is losing 4!!! starters to College (btw including Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje the biggest talent in Basketball right now, who will go to Duke for 2 years)
So in this example, Barcelona spent years and millions developing those talents, scouting them, recruiting them, training them and now before they can reap any benefits they go to the US. Barcelona is not getting a buyout, not getting compensation and they are not getting any benefit on the court cause they will never play for their senior team. That entire investment is completely pointless now. Wasted money
And these are just a couple examples, there is a MASSIVE talent drain from Europe to NCAA right now. Almost all 18 year old prospects who are good enough for professional Basketball are chosing the NCAA route right now.
There will be a point very soon where teams are gonna ask themselves the question: “Why are we doing this? We are wasting money and developing talent just so that other teams can reap the benefits and we dont even get compensated for it?”
And this will lead to teams investing WAY less money into their youth academies, eventually just doing the basics and minimum. This will lead to a massive weakening of european basketball and the talent level will be lower. And fewer european kids will reach NBA level and eventually the talent level of european players will go down drastically in the NBA. No more Doncic, Jokic etc.
There needs to be some sort of agreement between the 3 actors, because if it continues like this it wil be lose-lose-lose for all.
You might ask yourself “how is it different from before? Even before best talents went to NBA”
It is different because in the past only the absolute best talents went to the NBA at age 19 and their former clubs got buyout and compensated for it. So they at least got money back for their investment. And the B-Tier talent stayed in Europe and only entered draft later or maybe even never. So the teams either got money for their A-Tier talent or at least a few years of play from their B-Tier talent before they also got buyout for them
Now, almost all A-C tier talent in Europe will go to NCAA. No buyout, no playing time, nothijng
