Back in the 90s, when the Meyers-Briggs test was all the rage and people were trying to use it as some magic fortune telling system, Ainge used to look for ISTPs specifically because the calm and collected leaders were this type. They’re also noted to be hypercompetitive types, which makes them suited for sports.

Jordan, Bird, West, Pippen, Stockton, Pistol Pete were cited as the prime examples of a guard or wing who can “Sense” and “Perceive” things on the court while naturally “Thinking” on their feet so that they can quickly adjust under pressure.

Several were trash talkers but not really expressive/talkative, off court, like a Shaq or Barkley was and tended to spend time with smaller circles. Hence, more Introvert aligned/dominant. Also very competitive and willing to play through injuries.

It’s not a real science nor am I certain about the accuracy of these labels. But my point is that I believe Ainge still uses it and tremendously values this ISTP type. And Peterson might fall under this “Ideal Ainge type”.

AJ is a 6’9” wing who can create his own shot, defend multiple positions and potentially become the best player on a contender. Big, elite two-way wings are way harder to find than scoring guards. AJ’s ceiling and fit both made more sense.

We shall see if he actually will defend multiple positions and if he continues to be a high level shot creator at the next level, I’m not sold on either one of those at the level that you expect from a #1 pick. You gotta build those primary ball handler reads. Kobe and Jordan were quintessential 2 guards but the fact is they were able to be the primary ball handler if you wanted them to be. Kobe showed it in ‘12-‘13 when Nash got hurt and he went into PG mode.

It’s one of the biggest limitations I see with Ant. If I were Utah I’d run Peterson as point for basically as many years until you’re trying the legitimately contend, at which point you may find you need another ball handling / organizing guard even if it’s more of a Derek Fisher type (or more recently, what Marcus Smart can do on ball)

We don’t even have our pick next season. The goal is the 6th seed. Play ins are acceptable (esp 7-8 where you’ll get 2 games out of it at least). But below 10th is a failure, and if DP is at the center of it there will be negative sentiments.

West is wide open this year 5th seed+, and that’s without accounting for the inevitable injuries.

I disagree it’s actually the reverse for me and I don’t know how anyone can think otherwise. The SL is all about experimenting and getting a feel for the game at the next level which is much more complex, physical, and faster than the collegiate level. The fact DP looks like an elite scorer (wasn’t even chucking) and could easily get to any shot he wants is quite telling. I’m not worried about the turnovers especially when he’s going to have Lauri, JJJ, and Key to take the pressure off of him and make his life easier.

i just personally really value ball movement and have seen how my team has a habit of building a lead and then somehow losing the game bc of carelessness and turnovers so im particularly sensitive to turnovers

on the flip side, i dont care too much about efficiency in SL because id rather them build confidence during non consequential games than during the regular season, i think it’s important they see the ball go thru the hoop and also learn to have short term memory and forget the misses to build confidence and i think exhibition games are good for that

You can’t control if someone takes good shots on the court, you can also control the minutes of players if they are getting to many turnovers, or play them more off ball so they have less opportunities to turn it over. Frankly I don’t care that much about either low efficiency or high turnovers in summer league. For me it’s more showing that you have potential if you can improve your flaws as a player. And both efficiency and turnovers can be improved.

Facts. Folks already giving shit to Acuff for his efficiency even though it was the start of his first game going ¹⁄₉ or ¹⁄₁₀ and then once settled in, he was magic especially from the Red Shoe Swap at halftime. Watching the tape shows a collected great player working with what he’s got, not a chucker that missed a lot, while Nets played hard very physical defense.

He also coulda keep on the amazing flow he was on and ISO forced it to the rim himself for the final shot as the superstar hitting the game winner. Instead he used his high ball IQ & reading the defense, had faith in his teammates ability, and made the smart pass to make the WINNING FIRST decision over what would look coolest or make him personally look the best.

8 turnovers is a lot of turnovers, especially when these are much shorter quarters/less game is being played.

This was posted 6 months ago and I remember most mocks having DP as 1.

Sure as the season went on and DP suffered injuries it flipped the switch but DP was definitely viewed #1 I’m pretty active in mock draft communities and even YouTubers like SROS had him 1 for the vast majority of the year.
