This CBA was specifically to reject that approach. The whole point was to prevent another Warriors dynasty. And it’s working. 

People are unhappy, but the CBA is doing exactly what players and owners wanted it to do. 

I agree, but then the next problem you will run into is people complaining they cant trade these monster contracts when the player underperforms.

I suppose the case against this is that having to break up teams so harshly does genuinely help create a ton of parity, although I’d still favor making this change just because I think it’s more fun to let fans at least get their storybook endings instead of watch their team have to make harsh business decisions shortly after winning a championship.

Parity ultimately means less variance in team performance, especially over long periods. There’s only 2 ways to get there: (1) drag the good teams down, (2) lift the bad teams up.

Making a good team worse is very easy, just make it unaffordable to stay good, mission accomplished.

Making a bad team better is difficult and sometimes nearly impossible, see: Kings.

The only part I agree with is the team continuity part…but then it makes no sense that in the same sentence he is complaining about a cap on player movement.

For a long time now, it’s seemed like anyone close to sniffing an All-Star was getting a guaranteed Max deal no matter what. That’s probably changing now because of the punitive nature of the 1st/2nd Apron. To me, that’s probably a good thing.

There also needs to be some granularity at the top end though. That would leave more room for the “NBA Middle Class” guys to still get paid on a lot of teams.

Also, the Super-Max needs to be adjusted so that it only costs the normal max as far as the accounting goes for the team signing the player. That would make it work for it’s intended purpose which was to allow smaller market teams to be able to keep their Superstar players in house if they draft well.

Honestly, it seems like a lot of what I’m arguing is for lower pay in order to benefit the owners… but really as a fan it’s more about the money being spread out much smarter so that teams can build properly and fill out a roster. It’s become way too punishing to have some of these massive deals on the books. So, teams, and General Managers need to be smarter about the deals they are giving.

Super Max should be for First Team all-NBA only. Not all three teams. And even then… 35% is crazy. I’m really not sure why any single player needs more than 25% of the total cap. 

I think super max and max players that are extended off a rookie deal or drafted should count less towards cap, teams are being punished for drafting and developing guys well.

It should never be a pay to win league, and I agree with what you’re saying, but its gonna be really hard for most teams to keep or sign stars without maxing them, so I think a good compromise is rewarding loyalty/smart management.

The parity across the league has never been better though!

Max players need to actually be worth the max, can’t just max everybody and trade them like a hot potato when you get to the meaty years - what a fucking concept! 

We all know there are 5-10 dudes actually worth the max in the NBA, but maybe 50 of them are getting maxed on the regular. CBA just makes the consequences of maxing out everyone a current time problem instead of letting you pretend it’ll work itself out in a few years. So that you actually have to balance gutting your depth for adding another max star. The whole argument is so shallow it hurts

To address your point about older players, the obvious thing that no one seems to mention at all is that they just need to get rid of the max contract.

Players that are worth more than a max contract are simply too valuable for what teams have to pay them.

Why would any max level dude play for a bad or small market team unless they drafted them? You go to a big market and make more off the court money, or go to a good team and sell more jerseys that way. It’s why small market teams tank, because they have no other choice outside of maxing out non top tier guys and being middling.

It skews the value of draft picks, making them more valuable for small market teams, so they tank and trade for them. Big market teams have no issue attracting talent, so they can trade them at will, knowing the picks probably won’t be that good any way.

All this apron and bird rights goofiness is just trying to work around the fact that max contracts screw up team building, and wildly favor big market teams.

No max contracts, and a hard cap. That’s how they solve their problems.

Agree with you. NBA role players are making \(150-200M in career earnings nowadays. How much will Harrison Barnes already made \)225M in career earnings? Kuzma himself has made $127M by end of next season in 10 years, in spite of being kinda a empty stats guy and oncourt negative. And while the 2nd apron is a pain in the ass, the current CBA incentivizes players to resign where they are instead of going to free agency. 

It gets problematic with supermaxes and aging/oft-injured stars who expect to keep getting extensions and higher paydays.

Just think of cavs, warriors, spurs, miami In last decade and this decade. The great teams are limited to 2year runs, and forced to make big adjustments and getting rid of their cores just to make the aprons work.

I know OKC is incredibly position to handle this but to me, the biggest example was how celtics championship roster had to get blown apart too early just to handle the aprons, and I feel like the sport needs something different personally.
