The Jaylen Brown slander has been out of control the last few days for two reasons. One, outrageous cope. And two, everyone believes Brad Stevens is a great GM who can do no wrong. He IS a great GM, but guess what, they botched this situation by too publicly shopping Brown for Giannis. If you put that out there, you must close the deal. They balked over a bench player being included. Silly. It was a mistake. And then they got caught with their pants down because in the new CBA, it turns out there just aren’t many teams that can come up with $60M in matching salary, so his value plummeted artificially.

People keep pulling regular season splits without looking at who they’re actually playing. Tatum sits against bottom-feeders and back-to-backs where the schedule softens up significantly. Come playoff time those .690 games without him aren’t happening against elite defenses in a 7-game series. The depth is a luxury not a reason to move your best player.

Because when Tatum sits, there’s a much bigger drop-off in the Celtics performance than when Brown sits. Tatum’s impact looks more like a traditional superstar or MVP candidate, so I would value him that way.

They were also 13-3 last year with a recovering Tatum. And in prior years, the Celtics purposely held him out of games against ‘easier’ opponents. He never really had any injuries - even the nagging day to day kind - before his achilles.

the 58-26 thing is one of those stats that sounds way more damning than it actually is. a well-coached team with a deep roster is gonna win regular season games regardless, especially against weaker competition. but when you look at playoff settings where rotations tighten, tatum’s value as a guy who can create his own shot against elite defenses becomes really clear. you don’t trade a top 10 player because the regular season net rating holds up without him

the 58-26 without him stat looks crazy but context matters — that’s mostly against weaker teams where depth wins. the issue is tatum’s cold streaks can lose you a playoff series but his hot streaks can win you one. that game 7 philly 51-piece is the kind of ceiling you can’t replace with depth.
