Like highkey, Philly. We desperately needed another player who could put up shots and just elevate our talent level. Our ceiling was pretty hard capped with PG. Now by adding Jaylen brown we increase our ceiling a lot. It’s kinda the only and last big win now swing we could take to try to win during the Embiid years. It also gets us off the PG deal. Idk how many other teams it makes sense for, but it makes sense for Philly

This is all well within the confines of activism that “the system” approves of, and really the closest JB’s ever come to causing actual controversy was when he tried to stick up for Kyrie’s anti-vax and antisemitic goofiness, which certainly isn’t the good kind of controversy.

He wouldn’t, because his handling and facilitating aren’t good. Something that was not the case with someone like Drexler for example.

The best non-big 6th men are guys who can run the offense when the starting guard is out and play well on or off ball. Brown is not a point guard or combo guard, he isn’t gonna be the floor general for bench minutes and control the pace of the game, etc.

Among stars he would be one of the worst 6th men for the same reasons people are low on him in general.

Realistically his best role would be a defense first player who scores ~16-20 a night, but the ship has sailed on that bring a role he would accept.

that’s the thing about him. he’s so good and so flawed. he scores amazing middies and then bricks wide open threes. he can strip luka multiple times and then fall asleep while his man cuts baseline. he can posterize anyone in the league and then dribble it off his foot three times in a row.

You nailed why I felt he was overrated during the regular season, without making it a whole “analytics says he’s 7th” layer of obvious bullshit.

He’s worse than the stans think but much better than the haters say.

He also never really developed his handle at all.

Brown:

- 7.4 assists to 5.3 turnovers per 100

- +0.2 offensive on/off (cleaningtheglass)

Brunson:

- 9.6 assists to 3.3 turnovers per 100

- +6.6 offensive on/off (cleaningtheglass)

You are very much downplaying the gap in playmaking and offensive engine capabilities between Brown and Brunson IMO. And even moreso underestimating how much that gap actually affects their offensive impact.

It’s disrespectful as hell to Brunson to compare him to Brown as a playmaker. They are indeed similar quality scorers, but you seem to heavily underestimate just how important that playmaking gap is when you’re a 1st option.

Not only that, but consistent halfcourt scoring was one of the main things this team lacked when Joel wasn’t on the court.

I think there’s a few big differences here. Brunson has more clearly defined strengths and weaknesses which allows the Knicks to construct a roster around him. Hide him on defense, but make full use of him on offense, etc. Brown’s only particularly notable skill is volume scoring, which is great when you have a bunch of scrubs around you, but how many championship contending rosters are planning to do that on a regular basis? Brunson is also paid significantly less than Brown on his current contract, which allowed the Knicks to get a solid roster around him. I imagine once he takes the max on his next extension, there will be many more questions about how the Knicks can make the roster work.

Not every superstar has to be a complete two way player. Jokic is a complete cone on defense most of the times but ³⁰⁄₃₀ front offices would gladly pay him 60 million a year. The issue is that Brown is a good volume scorer but a poor playmaker and not a great team defender. It’s just not worth paying these guys the same amount of money as your Giannis’s and your Jokic’s now in this current second apron era. I’m sure the Celtics really appreciated Brown taking an increased offensive load to help carry them in the regular season minutes, but the real reason they traded him was that looming extension.

Brown doesn’t play elite D, that’s the issue, he’s got this reputation as an elite defender when he hasn’t been for two seasons now, especially this last season when he took on a much bigger role offensively.

I think calling his D elite is overstating where he’s at at this point in his career when you consider off-ball defense.

The advanced stats show he’s the opposite of a playoff riser.

Its worth noting the cap did not increase as much as it was projected to when JB signed his contract. On top of that the last 2 champions featured players that took salary cuts or were almost all on rookie deals. On top of all of that, there hasn’t been a repeat champion in nearly a decade, so clearly paying championship guys top dollar isn’t the formula anymore. Unless NBA revenue trends change, contending and large market teams probably aren’t going to keep paying super maxes to guys that aren’t top 5 because only top 5 guys can drag a budget roster to the finals.

Yeah, like would you rather have Brown for 60m or OG for 50? I think most NBA teams would choose OG.

No. People are rightfully saying he’s not good enough to justify paying him the percentage of the cap his salary is now, and moreso for his future 70 mil/year extension. It’s less a Jaylen Brown issue and more a CBA/2nd apron issue. If you remove contract from the equation, nobody is seriously saying he’s a bad player. He’s a very good player with significant enough flaws to prevent him from being the best player on a contending team, given the complications of paying him and still building a successful team around him to cover for those flaws.

haven’t seen that many people say he’s a scrub. i do think he’s really overpaid though. i think he’s skilled but nerfs his own impact with a bad playstyle. he wants to be kobe but should play more like shawn marion or like a wing version of amare stoudemire. attacking after the defense rotates and doing some secondary creation and play finishing rather than being a guy who starts plays all the time.

There absolutely were people saying it. Lots of us were very surprised he got a max contract. People talked about how he lucked into it by making all nba which had something to do with it.

I personally was surprised but thought oh well Brad knows what he’s doing.

I’m thrilled about the trade and I still don’t like JB. But he’s a clear upgrade. But his contract is worrisome. But not as worrisome as PGs so still a huge W. But I still think JB is over rated. But the sixers are better than they were in June. But I still DO NOT LIKE JAYLEN BROWN.
