I’m wondering more if it’s he’s viewed not as a “negative player”, but “negative given his contract”. With the 2nd apron acting as almost a hard cap it might be the view that you can get 2 30mil players who add up to way more impact than him at 60mil.

Stats and analytics are important but if they show you that Jaylen Brown is the 7th best player on the team then something is wrong

Yeah that’s how I see all these talks as well. Brown is a good player, great even, but he’s not worth his current contract, let alone the next one he’s going to ask for. We saw Ja caused a scene and his own career because Memphis won’t give him his extension. Now think what brown would do if he doesn’t get what he thinks he deserves? Celtics just traded him before all of these can ruin their locker room.

That’s what a negative asset almost always means in the NBA. Every player is evaluated relative to their contract. If Jerami Grant was being paid $5 million per year, he would’ve been a positive asset.

Analytics do not make Kobe and Iverson look worse. It was only their shooting efficiency and shot volume that people had problems with. But the actual on/off and play by play data show that they still make their teams better when they’re on the court during their primes. That’s not the same with Brown…who’s had 6 seasons of being a net negative when he’s on the court.

Everyone is thinking “analytics = shooting percentages” but there’s way more to evaluating a player than just that.

Analytics love Kobe. It’s advanced analytics that allow people to understand that Kobe was efficient relative to his era, if you just looked at his raw box score efficiency it seems incredibly inefficient compared to the modern nba, but advanced analytics help contextualize Kobe’s offense, especially because his entire prime was in the deadball era.

Back in Kobe and AI’s years the league and the front offices don’t nearly put as much weight in these analytics based evaluation, so there wasn’t a topic of discussion until much later. So i guess what I was trying to say is that this is the first time I’ve seen this much division in terms of how a player is viewed by the public and the front offices and advanced stats appeared to be the main difference

Kobe’s analytics were good. A lot lower on his defense than the reputation he had would warrant, but his offensive impact was actually quite a bit higher than just a random “he’s not that efficient!!” cursory glance done by a lot of people would indicate.

I just refuse to believe anyone likes Jaylen Brown as much as everyone acts like Jaylen Brown is great and Boston was fleeced. Bucks chose Herro over Brown, Trail Blazers valued Ja over Brown. Nobody was interested, and we got Paul George and 2 first rounders.

Brown demands the ball a lot, has a horrendous ability of turning the ball over, and wants to be the top option on a team. Not only that, he is then incredibly vocal in a negative sense. He argued with Nike, he continues to attack everyone that he feels disrespected, and the first thing he does when traded is go on his twitch and say he thinks it’s a conspiracy and there’s something more going on behind the scenes.

The problem is that his advanced stats aren’t bad, it’s that they aren’t good enough to justify contract he has and to be considered a team’s first scoring option. That’s what these analytics are arguing.

brother his off ball defense has been terrible for his whole career and any celtics fan who watches games closely will attest to that. he gets caught asleep all the time. he can play good on ball defense when he tries, but he doesn’t try that hard very often. someone posted a detailed defensive breakdown of his last season yesterday, and of the 15 players he defended most often last season, almost all of them shot good percentages against him. his reputation as an elite two way player is completely overblown.
