I’ve got another terrible idea: instead of free throws in game, every team has a designated free throw taker located in Secaucus New Jersey. If a team calls for a review on a foul, their player takes the shots. There will be no video, but the refs will let us know if it went in after reviewing the footage for 5 minutes.

No, we need to start thinking outside the box here. I say forgo the whole game and just make it a single free throw contest. First one to make a free throw wins the game. Now, I know what you’re thinking, how is that fair? If the first shot taken wins the game how does the other team even get a chance? Well, it’s simple. We start the game off the same way XFL used to. One ball at mid-court and a player from each team starts under the basket and sprints to the ball. The guy who ends up with it at the end of scrum, his team gets the first free throw attempt.

How about no free throws during the quarter except the 4th quarter. All free throws during the first 3 quarters are done at the intermission between quarters

Yep. In Summer League, players are also allowed 10 fouls before they foul out, because the point of SL is for them to develop their games without having to worry about being in foul trouble.

I guess the intent is to not let players delay and use the free throw attempts as a breather?

Getting fouled on a 3 and taking a free throw doesn’t prove you can make it though.

If a free throw will be worth three points should take it from the three point line instead of foul line.

That’s why they put in the 4th quarter and final 2 minute carry over rules but yeah almost every game you see at least one team take a “use it or lose it” timeout because ah fuggit, can’t take carry it over. And then boom 3 more minutes of ad revenue for the league

I think they also need to fix the fouling at the end of games, makes them really drag.

Simplest solution to me seems to be 1 ft + possession if youre in the bonus and its the last two minutes or whatever

Just call fewer fouls. The nba is unwatchable some games teams taking 30 free throws. 

They will just put more ads. The rating are also going up so I don’t think they care that much about speeding up the game.

how does this address flopping? you’re still awarded the same number of points (1, 2, or 3 points, depending on the situation) for the free throw.

it will add more variance per free throw attempt, but overall will average out to the same number of points.

And then ignore the rule after 2 weeks in the NBA.

Yeah there’s a logic here. Free throws are important, but they’re the most boring part of a game. If we can speed it up then that’s an improvement.

Good clean ethical hoops. But in this context, I think it invites more foul baiting than deter it.

Looks like I am in the minority but I personally hate free throws and would really appreciate just 1 free throw.

The absolute pressure that would come with free throws would be throw up worthy. I wanna skip the regular season and go straight to the playoffs to see this shit in true action.

We already got players nervous with multiple. Cutting it to just one sounds hilarious for a neutral fan.

It changes the entirety of the game when you consider how many times a player splits a pair at the line. You deserve to be punished for missing the second free throw, or the third. Step up, knock them down. The crux of free throws being worth a point is that it’s not contested. One shot, uncontested being worth 2 or 3 points is absurd

Or crack down on flopping, or cut the number of time outs every game from 7 to 4 or 5, or maybe put a 4th ref on the court, or hey how about this START THE FUCKING GAMES ON TIME INSTEAD OF 35 GODDAMN MINUTES LATE FOR NO REASON EVEN DURING THE NBA FINALS

Seems to be a combination of 1) statistical illiteracy 2) aversion to any change at all 3) miscasting this idea as a solution to flopping
