Kuminga is really fun for like 5-10 games because he does some good stuff and he’s so young you think he can improve them by the end of the year he’s still a knucklehead and you’re over it.

Kuminga is going to get Lakers fans VERY excited. Until they ultimately want him off the team desperately.

Considering the Lakers cap situation, Kuminga is probably worth the gamble though.

Kuminga and helping perimeter defense don’t belong in the same sentence. He’s a lot like prime Russell Westbrook was on defense where due to his athletic ability he can stay in front of anyone as long as they have the ball. The issue is off ball defense where just like Westbrook he falls asleep constantly or isn’t willing to fight through screens or chase around shooters on the perimeter.

Perfect opportunity to buy low. It’s not likely he reinvents his career and buys in on defense, but it’s worth trying if they can get him for nothing cause he has the tools for it.

$24 mill to vet min would be a good wake up call to change the focus of his game if he wants to stay in the league. Luka and Reaves could find him on a lot of cuts to the rim too, their offense is missing an athletic slasher.

Kuminga honestly fixes their biggest problem immediately if they can get him

Grimes is good enough defensively where if you pair him with kuminga as a defensive wing duo I think you can get by defensively with Kessler anchoring the paint behind them

Reaves-grimes-Luka-JK-Kessler with sexton-Carr-thiero-mamu-Ayton actually makes a lot of sense

I’m really excited for the Ayton/Kuminga era to start. Nothing is better than seeing lakers fans overconfident in the preseason then have reality hit them upside the head

I actually like that the Lakers have had a ton of roster turnover. The roster last year wasn’t a great one at all to grow with Luka and obviously wasn’t nearly good enough to win now. Not a big Kuminga fan but maybe JJ can get through to him, which at a vet minimum isn’t a terrible signing at all.

Lakers would have to waive Vando and stretch his contract out over multiple years to free up cap space. I think it frees up $7mill. But his dead money would hurt them as Kessler/AR/Luka’s contracts scale up with each year limiting their ability to make changes if needed.

Kuminga will absolutely thrive if he completely buys in to a Shawn Marion role. High-motor, Swiss army knife who is not tired to show effort and run.

But instead, he sees himself as Michael Jordan lmao. He doesn’t really have the tools and consistency to be a legit offensivet threat. He should capitalize on using his versatility and frame.

He’s fine when he’s locked in. But that doesn’t happen with any frequency or consistency. He’ll have a couple games where he’s locked in defensively and then he starts to show it offensively which quickly turns into believing he’s the 1A on offense and forgetting about defense. The minutes start to dwindle then he’s riding the pine until he remembers to lock in on defense.

Keon Ellis or Herb Jones wouldve been a great addition for them

This is just poor framing by the reporter. Lakers would add Kuminga as an infusion of youth and athleticism at their biggest position of need. Not as some defensive stopper. He’s worth the swing at a low cost.
