Most of the reports you’re talking about just say “X hasn’t been strongly pursuing Jaylen Brown” rather than an actual refutation of trade discussions. It sounds like Boston is calling everyone and seeing what JB is worth and most teams are saying, “Not much.”
Jalen’s agent is clearly the feed of info here based on what shams said at the end. “Imagine you’re Jalen and you were an MVP finalist etc etc” is obviously what he was told to say by the agent. They are making it seem like there is a huge market for Jalen even if there isn’t because it’s better for Jalen if there is a perception he’s in high demand so that the Celtics quickly take an offer they like. Also it’s important to note that shams said Jalen hasn’t requested a trade, but didn’t say he doesn’t want to be traded. Big shocker, the dude wants to be traded but just has been instructed by his agent not to say that because it would worsen the leverage for the Celtics and hurt the relationship between the agent and the team.

Brown is owed 180 million over the next three seasons. Kawhi is an expiring 50 million (Conspiratorially, I think the NBA might have been involved in getting Kawhi out of LA to lessen the controversy by a few degrees). Brown’s contract is underwater. While a really good player, he isn’t a good enough player to carry a team a championship alone, and that salary cripples any team for roster building around him. The salary cap and aprons along with the fact that front offices as a whole are the most competent they have ever been lead to the Celtics probably getting a disappointing return if they trade him. That being said, it only takes one owner wanting to make a splash for it to happen.

Brown isn’t good enough to carry a team to a championship, but Kawhi hasn’t been that good in at least a few years either and will only get older / more injury prone (which is saying something). The fact that he could leave for nothing in a year also isn’t a great selling point to me

Very few people want Jaylen gone just for the sake of it. There is the common argument though that he is just not a very good team player, and that tends to lead to a mixed bag of opinions when Jaylen is seemingly discontent with his role behind Tatum.

Just want to add in context here. Ownership changed to a PE group. Fronted by a Celtics fan but PE nonetheless. They are looking to build an arena for the Celtics. Since currently we pay rent to the Bruins who actually own TD Garden.
It is believed that trading JB to cut costs will free up money for ownership to build a stadium.
This is what many are talking about in Boston they saw this coming from a mile away.
Salary Cap does not come out of ownership’s pockets. Plus they’ll most likely have to match salaries on the trade regardless so it’s not like they’ll be saving money right away.
I’m far from an expert on cap/CBA, but I understand the broad strokes well enough. Being over cap and paying the tax ABSOLUTELY comes out of ownership pockets (the “tax” part specifically). When a team is a tax payer, they cut a check to the other 29 teams in the league, just a pure financial tax where they pay the other 29 franchises for “overspending.”
Then with the most recent CBA ownership realized certain teams were perfectly comfortable paying the tax for eternity (*cough*GSWcough) so they stepped up the penalties. Now you lose roster building mechanisms and can pay a “repeater” tax that balloons if you stay above cap. IlFor a PE ownership group trying to min/max arena investment dollars, they absolutely want to avoid this. Oh! But they also get to sell to fans it’s for “basketball reasons” because of the roster building penalties. It’s why JB’s old-CBA contract extension is the real stink in the room.

Well according to Tatum he came back at 80-85%. Other than his shot not falling for the first chunk of games due to rust he was already arguably a better player than he was pre injury due to how much of a crazy leap his playmaking and rebounding took.
I think being forced to sit on the sidelines for 80% of a season really helped Tatum become a much better playmaker than he already was.
My hope that I know won’t happen is Cleveland should trade Mitchell for him and get Bron.
