Pick compensation is obviously better for Clips than what we got, and we had to give up Danny green too so there’s that. It’s pretty close though, DeRozan was a legit dude that just kept getting sonned by LeBron in the playoffs.

The gap between Demar and Ingram, and Yak and Dick as prospects is huge. Basically just gave up 1 more pick which doesnt make up for the gap between players

2018 Demar Derozan coming off an all NBA selection and 2018 poetl (young prospect with good upside who has already looked like a real nice rotation piece and ready to be a starting center), is worth WAAAAAYYYY more than 2026 Brandon Ingram (neutral asset at best) and Gradey Dick (negative asset. The raptors improve simply not having him on the team).

People are so blinded by the extra picks attached to this trade over the previous one, but the players involved more than cover that gap.

His injury situation was considered worse (and more mysterious) back then.

Also, people thought Derozan was a better player than we know him to be today. He was just a season removed from averaging 27/5/4 and followed it up with 23/4/5 + 2nd team All NBA + 8th in MVP voting and despite the mediocre efficiency, some people still thought he was a true star. Hmmmm…

Kawhi coming from the Spurs was an unknown health-wise and was also pretty clear about not wanting to stay anywhere but LA. Masai took a risk for one year of Kawhi and it paid off.

Now everyone kinda knows what he brings to the table, and approximately what his value is. Raps needed a guy like that to take them over the top so they had to pay up for it.

This narrative is dumb. Demar was a 4x All Star in the past 5 years at that point, and made 2 All-NBA teams. He was much better than current BI and had much more value.

I think that’s forgetting how good both DeRozan and Pöltl were considered to be in 2018. DeRozan had just come off two seasons where he got MVP votes and been on the All-NBA team (3rd team / 2nd team). He was much better than Ingram is now. Pöltl had just had a season where he got sixth man of the year votes and seen as a really promising young player, light years ahead of Dick.

So it’s much worse players plus an extra first rounder (essentially). I don’t see that as more.

In 2018, Kawhi was coming off 9 games played, there was uncertainty regarding his health, and he was a pure rental unwilling to sign an extension. Yet, the Raps still traded a recent all-nba player in Demar, a recent top 10 draft prospect in Poeltl, plus a 1st rounder.

In 2026, Kawhi is coming off a 65 game played season where he was one of the best players in the NBA and he’s willing to sign an extension, so you’re getting at least 3 years from him. The most valuable assets the Clippers got were 2 picks 5-7 years from now.

Completely different scenario’s.

July 2018 Kawhi Leonard had just:

- missed pretty much the whole year with an injury
- got into a very ugly and public dispute with his teammates and coaching/medical staff regarding his injury
- had 1 year left on his contract , and was non-committal to signing an extension.

2026 Kawhi Leonard

- has been pretty healthy for 2 straight seasons
- Came off his best year efficiency wise
- wants to sign an extension in Toronto

Demar had just come off the best season of his career helping lead Toronto to the 1st seed and making all nba second team and on a solid contract. He had some disappointing playoff series but was still considered a very good player.

Poeltl was a very promising second year player who was drafted 9th overall.

Both guys had positive value.

Ingram is overpaid and clearly not a guy you can build a contender around. His value is basically neutral maybe even negative.

Dick had a very disappointing season and coming up on RFA. Toronto doesn’t want to pay him. His value is also neutral or negative.

Also. In 2018. Kawhi was a question mark as to whether he was healthy or would even play. It was almost a guarantee when the trade happened he was a one year rental. It was even suggested he may refuse to play for the Raptors completely.

Now Kawhi demanded to go to Toronto (ironic) and has already said he’ll extend. So you have 3 guaranteed years. He’s also *currently* healthy.

That is wild.

That 2018 trade really looks like a bargain in hindsight.

Kawhi has one of the best winning percentages of all time, is a certified bucket getter in the mid range (which matters in the playoffs), and can still defend when called upon. He will have numerous players taking the pressure off of him defensively in Toronto, so he will get to continue letting his offensive game shine.

I actually like the trade. Unless you amass draft capital like Sam Presti that can be used to bring players in or you just happen to be amazing at drafting, NBA draft picks aren’t even tossups. Even in the top 10, you have like a 6 in 10 chance of drafting a certified bust.

One of the Raptor commentators pointed out the draft capital difference is because DeMar was better than BI is so part of it is dumping the contract. Additionally we are getting the extension which made us know we’re keeping him. We also are giving pick instead of giving up one of our better young prospects like when we have up Jak for Kawhi in 2019, so it’s Gradey and the picks vs Ja’Kobe, CMB, Shead, and the like

The players the Raptors sent in 2018 were better than BI and especially Gradey. Kawhi’s injury was a real ? At the time and he allegedly even made threats that he wouldn’t show up to training camp if he didn’t like the team. He was also pretty clear that he was incredibly unlikely to sign.

In 2026 he absolutely has a rough injury history, but he just came off his healthiest season and has continued to show when healthy he is one of the best players in the world. He was openly willing and wanting to extend with Toronto. BI had his healthiest season since his rookie year playing for the Raptors so I think the team and Kawhi believe in the medical staff to keep him healthy enough for the playoffs.

Nobody really wanted him in 2018. Plenty of teams would’ve been willing to sign and extend him this year. The packages overall are pretty similar in value IMO, with this years being a bit more expensive, but contextually I’d rather they not give up any key players and give up draft picks instead like they did this time.
