Haliburton fit perfectly with them and they both wanted each other but they thought he wasn’t worth the second pick. If they were able to trade down they would have looked like absolute geniuses.

Were they not allowed to workout players? I remember Ant saying he did a workout with Steve Kerr where Kerr challenged that he wasn’t giving 100% effort.

Follow up drafts since, of older and more experienced college players, have worked a lot better. Podz has been fine, here’s hoping Yax is an NBA player.

Yeah but usually the second pick overall is expected to be great. James Wiseman was a bigger risk because he was basically a high school basketball player.

There was 4 all stars who went in the top 12, its a huge loss for GSW that their second overall pick wasnt even playable.

At the time, the warriors needed a Center and every mock had wiseman going to the warriors.

So did the Blazers in 1984 but that pick ended up being horrifically bad considering they passed on Jordan.

It’s why you always pick best available and you don’t care about need.

I remember there being a video analyzing his game pre draft, calling out everything he ended up being terrible about. They could have pieced it together

Summer League made Yang Hansen look like a useful player last year.

The only path to success for a summer league player is to start a dialogue with a bad first game, have 1-3 solid performances and then get a minor injury that ends your summer.

Random memory of watching a 20-year old Moses Moody go off for 34 points in 27 minutes in Summer League and thinking “could he be a future all-star?”

Warriors fan and i totally agree on Kerr not developing young players as a glaring knock on his largely stellar tenure. the only true success in his time is probably Looney, Poole was trending success but the punch/aftermath deaded that

to be fair, for a lot of the earlier half of his tenure the team was drafting late in the draft, but they got some lottery picks and either whiffed (Wiseman) or slow-walked their progress (Kuminga/Moody)

i feel sorry for Wiseman because of the serious injuries he’s had and his NBA career derailing (hopefully not permanently), but COVID pretty much killed any chance of a a decent evaluation of talent, then he went to a team with title expectations led by a coach who would rather use journeyman 1-year rental players than develop the draft picks. if say the Grizzlies had drafted him, he’s probably a solid rotation guy on an NBA team. instead he had too many growing pains early, immediately lost the confidence of the coaching staff, then got seriously hurt so he couldn’t build on his initial season at all. just tough luck all around - now he’s just going be known as the biggest bust from a pretty solid draft class

An NBA team isn’t set up to teach someone how to play basketball who doesn’t really know how to play basketball. This was a terrible pick by ownership mainly because he had played literally 3 games in college, and didn’t have the BBIQ to pick up the game on the fly.

The Warriors aren’t the only team that tried to turn him into an NBA player. He just doesn’t have it.

Wiseman was just too far from an NBA level talent to ever make it. Everyone looked at his size/athleticism and thought he was a can’t miss prospect, but he didn’t have a single on court thing he does at a passable level. Raw prospects usually have one or two skills that they show early, and then round out the rest of their game. Wiseman was bad at rim protection, post offense, setting picks, rebounding, help defense, catching passes, passing, court awareness, perimeter defense, and floor spacing. He also had zero dawg. The only thing that stood out was a decent touch out to the 3pt line (although a slow release), but nothing came of it.

In hindsight, he probably should have been stashed in the g-league for a few years to develop, but that would have embarrassed Lacob.

Kuminga is a decent player, but he had demands of playing time and his role on offense. The Warriors played him appropriately for his talent, but he wanted to be a star. He then got traded to the Hawks and proceeded to get the same role as on the Warriors.

this argument would hold more weight if players left the warriors and ever did anything/got better. the only one so far is ryan rollins. poole, wiseman, kuminga, etc. have all been terrible for all of their other teams, too.

also poole looked like the worst player in the league as a rookie and ended up earning a giant contract. is that not player development?

He was genuinely the stupidest player I’ve ever seen. 3 years into his career and he still couldn’t set a screen or catch a pass or time a cut correctly. Not the Warriors fault.

Injuries were a bigger part

No one stunted his growth. The warriors had him starting, and he was abysmal before injuries. They even brought in the same developmental coach Jokic had, and it didn’t work.

It’s wiseman’s fault he didn’t pan out. Not GSW’s

Steve Kerr is excellent at that.

There hasn’t been a single rookie that the Warriors have developed during Kerr’s tenure that turned into a good player. It’s almost impressive.
