People will point out other similar situations where a player got a max and use that as reasoning for why Duren deserves the max. Those should serve as cautionary tales, not the standard.

Seriously really smart of Detroit to handle it. They have a ton of leverage so use it. Basically what happens here:

##Step 1 two options:

1. Sacramento approaches Detroit with a sign and trade offer. It would have to be good enough for Detroit to want it (assets to almost the level of actually trading Duren with say 1 year left). If it is great everyone is happy.

2. Detroit says no and Sacramento has to decide.

##Step 2 two options:

1. Give up and not sign Duren. Leaving Detroit back to square 1 but Duren having less leverage.

2. Sacramento clears the cap space to sign Duren. This is quite hard as far I can tell Sacramento is over the cap and would have to trade either decent players or pay assets to get off of bad contracts. IDK what it would take to get off LaVine. Next step depends on how much cap space they can clear.

##Step 3 two options:

1. Sacramento clears enough space to sign him to a reasonable deal (like 35 million) and Detroit just matches and gets him for the original offer anyway.

2. Sacramento actually clears enough space and chooses to sign him to the 25% max.

So instead of just giving Duren the 25% max the Pistons are counting on just 1 of the following 3 steps to have option A happen instead of B. If all 3 of those turn up B then they just give him the 25% max anyway.

The Stewart salary dump just doesn’t seem necessary for anything we’ve done or seem to be doing so far. And it seems like it would be real nice to have another serviceable center on the roster right now during all of this.

At this point, we’re teetering right on the edge of “Trajan is a genius playing a long game and I only now see it” and “Trajan is a fucking dumbass and wasn’t able to do any of the things he thought he’d be able to in this off-season and now we’re worse off”

He’ll get his offer, Detroit will panic, match and in a few years someone else will do the same.

Sabonis still makes 45M so I doubt Pistons would prefer him.

And playoff woes won’t be a problem because they aren’t gonna reach those in about 3 years

It’ll be for a max which he’s not worth. He got exposed in the playoffs 

Pretty rich for a fan of a team that purposely traded for James Harden. Sometimes you just have to go after whatever distressed asset is available and pray.

I think it’s a combination of a few things.

1. Duren shrank in the playoffs big time. That’s concerning. He’s faced 3 teams in the playoffs now, and he rarely looked better than replacement level.

2. Duren benefits a lot from having Cade. He’s a middling shooter, even for a center, and his defense is fine but not spectacular. He’s mostly a lob threat and a dunker, but his motor is kinda becoming a concern.

3. Paul Reed has shown that he has the motor that Duren doesn’t. He lacks the ceiling, but his floor is higher. Fans were begging for Reed minutes in the playoffs because of how much Duren was struggling. In his limited minutes, Reed played very well.

4. This team is more in need of spacing than a lob threat. Allocating money to guys who can shoot opens the floor more for Cade, and also opens up Ausar’s offense, since he’s basically also just a lob threat/dunker.

So yeah. I think the FO is just betting that they allocate some of the Duren money to a creator/shooter without really losing much production from the Center spot.

I actually agree. I think the tough thing is finding that creator/shooter. If you replaced Duren with like, Austin Reaves or something, I think we’d be better off. But I’m not sure a guy like that is available.

These comments are overreacting to the max. Acting like Duren is hopeless after one bad playoff performance. He’s only 22, he will get better, I’d love for the Kings to get him.

I mean, he averaged ¹²⁄₁₁ in 34 minutes per game against the Knicks. Not exactly mind-boggling.

Exactly. Jalen Duren is handsome Andre Drummond but not nearly as good of a rebounder. You can use a young guy like that, but once you pay him like a centerpiece, you’re cooked.
