It’s a great deal but idk if he’s a quality starting center. He’s an incredible offensive rebounder and has shown improvement finishing around the rim, and even shooting from the corner. But his rim protection is sub-par at best. He’s a high end back up big, but a bit out of his depth as a starter.

Yeah it wouldn’t be a good outcome for the Jazz. If they don’t hammer out a contract before FA they’re taking a real gamble. But we’ll see, maybe teams won’t be willing to throw that much at Kessler and the Jazz will have quite an advantage at the negotiating table, which is very important for their cap in the next couple of years

If he’s getting $40M after missing a whole year, then he’s earning it based on everything the Jazz knew before deciding to not trade him last offseason. It’s not like he unexpectedly broke out after betting on himself like Jalen Duren. Jazz were also tanking last year and had no need for him. It’s poor asset management if he walks for nothing regardless.

$40 million for walker kessler is gross, it’s possible he’s worth that if he plays a full season and continues to improve but that’s entirely speculation, SGA makes $41 million for reference.

One of the best rim protectors in the league, very good rebounder, capable rim runner. Rated well by analytics as well. It’s a bit of a projection, but so is every free agent. If the nets are trying to be serious in the next few years, leveraging cap space into declining contracts is how they can do it. Walker Kessler makes a MBJ, Egor Demin, MPJ lineup function defensively

Signing Kessler for $40 million doesn’t move the needle at all.

Compare Sharpe’s per 36 to Kessler’s. Yes Kessler is a better defender and rim protector but not by $30 million.

The Jazz have 12 players under contract. If they re-sign Kessler they have the required 14 once Peterson is signed. Skirting the tax this year isn’t an issue at all.

Next year if we max Keyonte we’d be over the tax but under the second apron. If the team progresses as hoped, the owner will likely be fine with a year in the tax.

After that things get difficult and Utah probably has to dump a big salary (likely Lauri) no matter what Kessler re-signs for. So him only having 2 years left on a declining deal helps rather than hurts.

If the aim is to use an offer sheet to make things tricky for Utah to keep Kessler, there needs to be big money in year 4. Declining deals or shorter deals aren’t anywhere near as much of a problem.

Plus you have some durability stuff and it’s not like he’s a lights out scorer.

Adams being an all time offensive rebounder helped a lot with that.

Once he was off they still tried the strat but it had more varying outcomes to say the least. I also don’t think it’s a great playoff strategy, but for the regular season sure it may get you some extra wins, just need the roster to buy into the gameplan for an entire season.
